Tailings ponds of the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, Alberta, Canada, are likely not significant sources of total mercury and methylmercury to nearby ground and surface waters.

Tailings ponds created during industrial bitumen extraction from the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR), Alberta, Canada, have been shown to contain numerous contaminants, such as polycyclic aromatic compounds and naphthenic acids, and to slowly leak into adjacent ground and surface waters. Despite elevated concentrations of total mercury (THg) in nearby Athabasca River waters downstream of the AOSR developments, to date there are no published studies of THg or methylmercury (MeHg; a potent neurotoxin) in the AOSR tailings ponds. Here we present concentrations of THg and MeHg, as well as variou…

Modified Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) of Contrast Extravasation on Dual-Energy CT Predicts Haemorrhagic Transformation and Poor Outcome After Endovascular Thrombectomy.

PURPOSE: Haemorrhagic transformation (HT) is an unpredictable complication of acute ischaemic stroke with large vessel occlusion following endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), and imaging parameters that are correlated with haemorrhage are unknown. We developed a modified version of the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) by adding a periventricular region to assess cerebral contrast extravasation (CE) on dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) and assessed its predictive value for HT. METHODS: In total, 101 patients who underwent DECT immediately after EVT were prospe…

Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) Performance of Early-Term Greek Infants: The Impact of Shorter Gestation on Gross Motor Development among "Term-Born" Infants.

Early-term birth (37+0 to 38+6 gestational weeks) may have a negative impact on infants' neurodevelopment compared to delivery at 39 weeks or beyond. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gross motor development of early-term infants using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). A total of 1087 healthy infants (559 early-term and 528 full-term infants born at 39+0 to 41+6 weeks of gestation) were studied. Mean AIMS scores were compared between the two groups at monthly intervals. The impact of gestational age on total AIMS scores was assessed by linear regression, after adjustment for c…

Influenza-like illness-related emergency department visits: Christmas and New Year holiday peaks and relationships with laboratory-confirmed respiratory virus detections, Edmonton, Alberta, 2004-2014.

BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) visit volumes can be especially high during the Christmas-New Year holidays, a period occurring during the influenza season in Canada. METHODS: Using daily data, we examined the relationship between ED visits for the chief complaint "cough" (for Edmonton, Alberta residents) and laboratory detections for influenza A and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (for Edmonton and surrounding areas), lagged 0-5 days ahead, for non-pandemic years (2004-2008 and 2010-2014) using multivariable linear regression adjusting for temporal variables. We defined these cough-r…

Correlation of Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography (CT) Score Among Ischaemic Stroke Patients and Their Outcomes at Selected Centres in Kampala: A Prospective Study.

Background Stroke contributes significantly to morbidity and is the second leading cause of death globally. The Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography (ASPECT) Score, a 10-point scoring system with anatomical regions of the brain over the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory, is used to assess early ischaemic changes on a non-contrast computed tomography scan (NCCT) of the head. It is used as a predictor of functional outcome and in the stratification of ischaemic stroke patients' treatment to guide reperfusion and non-thrombolytic management. This study aimed to determine the corr…

Human papillomavirus vaccination patterns among youth aged 16-26 in the context of publicly-funded eligibility changes: a retrospective cross-sectional study from Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programs in Canada primarily target school-aged adolescents (≤ 15 years) through publicly-funded, school-based delivery. In the province of Alberta, publicly-funded HPV vaccination for older youth (age ≤ 26) began with a risk-based program (i.e. availability limited to those at elevated risk for HPV infection and/or progression to disease) in 2018, expanding to an age-based program (i.e. available to all individuals within funded age groups) in July 2020. This study explores HPV vaccination patterns among 16-26-year-olds during this time perio…

Evaluation of a pilot outreach program to support point-of-care screening for individuals with diabetes who are experiencing homelessness in Alberta, Canada: results of a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Accessing diabetes care requires effort and time. Homelessness often forces individuals to prioritize securing shelter and safety over medical appointments, particularly for the screening and prevention of long-term diabetes complications. We evaluated the effectiveness and costs associated with a point-of-care screening program with expedited referral pathways within two inner-city community sites in Calgary, Canada serving individuals experiencing homelessness. METHODS: We conducted a non-randomized concurrent-convergent mixed methods pilot study of the program. Adults experienc

Subtype-Specific Selection for Resistance to Fluoroquinolones but Not to Tetracyclines Is Evident in Campylobacter jejuni Isolates from Beef Cattle in Confined Feeding Operations in Southern Alberta, Canada.

Campylobacter jejuni was longitudinally isolated from beef cattle housed in four confined feeding operations (CFOs) in Southern Alberta, Canada, over 18 months. All of the cattle were administered a variety of antimicrobial agents (AMAs) nontherapeutically and metaphylactically during their time in the CFOs. In total, 7,966 C. jejuni isolates were recovered from cattle. More animals were colonized by the bacterium after >60 days in the CFO (interim) than were individuals upon entry at the CFO (arrival). Subtyping and resistance to seven AMAs were determined for 1,832 (23.0%) and 1,648 (20.7%) …
