Pathological aspects of an amebiasis outbreak in captive testudines.

Amebiasis is a parasitic disease primarily associated with amoeboid protozoa of the genus Entamoeba; however, comparable infections may also be caused by other genera in different hosts. In reptiles, it is mainly attributed to Entamoeba invadens, which can be fatal in several species. This report describes an outbreak of amebiasis in two species of testudines, red-footed tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonarius) and black-bellied sliders (Trachemys dorbigni), from a wildlife screening and rehabilitation centre in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The facility housed around 130 testudines, and between 2022 and 2…

Dyspnea and dysentery: a case report of pleuropulmonary amebiasis.

Pleuropulmonary amebiasis is an uncommon complication of Entamoeba histolytica infection. It typically occurs in endemic regions including Central and South America, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The case of a previously healthy US Army male stationed in Liberia with an acute onset of fevers, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea is presented. He developed a productive cough with pleuritic chest pain and imaging revealed multiple liver abscesses, with rupture through the diaphragm causing a large right pleural empyema. A positive Entamoeba histolytica serum antibody and pleural fluid antige…

Outbreak of amebiasis in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, 1998.

In 1998, we investigated a suspected outbreak of amebic liver abscesses caused by Entamoeba histolytica in the Republic of Georgia, using a case-control study. A questionnaire was administered and blood samples were obtained from cases and controls for serologic diagnosis. Medical records showed that E. histolytica infections were rarely diagnosed before 1998. However, from July through September 1998, 177 cases of suspected amebiasis were identified. Of 52 persons who had diagnosed liver abscesses, 37 (71%) were confirmed serologically to have antibodies against E. histolytica, compared with …

Pathogenesis of intestinal amebiasis: from molecules to disease.

In spite of a wealth of knowledge on the biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology of Entamoeba histolytica, little has been done to apply these advances to our understanding of the lesions observed in patients with intestinal amebiasis. In this review, the pathological and histological findings in acute amebic colitis are related to the molecular mechanisms of E. histolytica pathogenicity described to date. Infection of the human colon by E. histolytica produces focal ulceration of the intestinal mucosa, resulting in dysentery (diarrhea with blood and mucus). Although a complete picture…
