Hypersexuality and gender dysphoria have both been described in the literature as symptoms of mania. Hypersexuality is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 as part of the diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder. Gender dysphoria is less often described and its relation to mania remains unclear. This case report describes a young homosexual man presenting in a manic episode with co-morbid amphetamine abuse whose mania was marked by hypersexuality and the new onset desire to be a woman. Both of these symptoms resolved with the addition of valproic acid to antips

Stimulant use disorders (STIM): (1) elicit compulsive behaviors that can lead to altered brain structure and function; and (2) trigger inflammatory responses by inducing the release of immune molecules, suggesting potential adverse effects. Our previous findings show that amphetamine use disorder is associated with altered neural processing during reward, interoception, and inhibitory control tasks. To extend these findings, we investigated links between neural processing and inflammation that may contribute to STIM. Participants from the first half of the Tulsa-1000 (T1000) study (n = 500) me

Estradiol potentiates behavioral sensitization to cocaine as well as self-administration of cocaine and other drugs of abuse in female rodents. Furthermore, stimulated dopamine (DA) in the dorsolateral striatum (DLS) is rapidly enhanced by estradiol, and it is hypothesized that this enhanced DA release mediates the more rapid escalation of drug taking seen in females, compared with males. The mechanisms mediating the effect of estradiol to enhance stimulated DA release were investigated in this study. Using in vivo microdialysis and high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electroch

Recent methamphetamine and opioid use epidemics are a major public health concern. Chronic stimulant and opioid use are characterized by significant psychosocial, physical and mental health costs, repeated relapse, and heightened risk of early death. Neuroimaging research highlights deficits in brain processes and circuitry that are linked to responsivity to drug cues over natural rewards as well as suboptimal goal-directed decision-making. Despite the need for interventions, little is known about (1) how the brain changes with prolonged abstinence or as a function of various treatments; and (

BACKGROUND: The impact of substance use disorders (SUD) in an Asian population has not been fully explored. We aimed to assess the risk of mortality, accident and emergency (A&E) department attendances, and hospital admissions associated with SUD in a population-based cohort study.
METHOD: Patients diagnosed with SUD in public A&E departments from 2004 to 2016 (N = 8,423) were identified in the Clinical Database Analysis and Reporting System of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and 1:1 matched to patients without SUD by propensity score (N = 6,074 in each group). Relative risks of mortality, A

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Amphetamine-type stimulants now rank second worldwide in the table of most widely used recreational drugs. Many countries report increased availability and increased purity of the drugs.Surprisingly, while many authors in the last decade have described clinical issues and demographic patterns associated with amphetamine use, there is little published research quantifying the specifics of the impact of 'ICE' use on health resources. It is, therefore, timely to review the available literature on the impact of this group of drugs on emergency medical systems.
RECENT FINDINGS: R

The association between stimulant use and legal outcomes was examined in rural adults aged 18-21 years (n = 98) in the Mississippi River Delta of Arkansas from 2003 through 2008. Participants were interviewed at baseline and every 6 months for 2 years, using the Substance Abuse Outcomes Module, Addiction Severity Index, Short-Form 8 Health Survey, Brief Symptom Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire depression screen, and an abbreviated antisocial personality disorder measure. More than three quarters were arrested before baseline; 47 were arrested over the next 2 years. Early arrest but not

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Concerns about crystal methamphetamine use and harm have increased in multiple countries. This paper describes how changes in the availability and use of crystal methamphetamine have impacted on methamphetamine-related harms in Australia.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Data on methamphetamine use were obtained from population-level surveys, health service data and surveys of drug use among sentinel groups of ecstasy users and people who inject drugs. Data were obtained on seizures, arrests, clandestine laboratory detections, hospital separations, mental health unit admissions, dru

This study investigates the potential heterogeneity of ecstasy or MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) users. Data came from the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). Latent class analysis (LCA) and multinomial logistic regression procedures were used to identify subtypes of ecstasy users. Approximately 1.6% (n = 562) of adult participants (N = 43,093) reported lifetime ecstasy use. LCA identified three subtypes of ecstasy users. Class 1 exhibited pervasive use of most drug classes (ecstasy-polydrug users, 37%). Class 2 reported a high rat

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia and comorbid drug use disorders (DUD) have a severe course of illness. Despite strong evidence that drug use can exacerbate psychotic symptoms, we have limited knowledge of how specific drugs may increase risk of schizophrenia readmission in this group. This study aimed to assess drug-related predictors of readmission for schizophrenia among a national cohort of patients with a history of schizophrenia admitted to DUD treatment.
METHODS: A record-linkage study was used to assess drug-related factors associated with readmission to mental health treatment

Substance use disorder is a growing public health challenge in the United States. People who use drugs may be more vulnerable to ambient heat due to the effects of drugs on thermoregulation and their risk environment. There have been limited population-based studies of ambient temperature and drug-related morbidity. We examined short-term associations between daily ambient temperature and emergency department (ED) visits for use or overdose of amphetamine, cocaine and opioids in California during the period 2005 to 2019. Daily ZIP code-level maximum, mean, and minimum temperature exposures wer

Stress is a major risk factor for the development of both schizophrenia and depression, and comorbidity between the two is common in schizoaffective disorders. However, the effects of stress exposure (i.e. chronic mild stress-CMS) on depression-related phenotypes in a neurodevelopmental model relevant to schizophrenia (i.e. methylazoxymethanol acetate-MAM) have yet to be explored and could provide insight into shared mechanisms of disease. To this end, we combined the prenatal MAM model with adult CMS exposure and explored the resultant pathophysiology using the social approach test (SAT), imm

OBJECTIVE: As concerns over methamphetamine use grow, structural factors-particularly local labor-market context-may offer insights into geographic patterns. We examine whether county-level industry-specific job shares are associated with methamphetamine use and use disorder among working-aged individuals in the United States.
METHODS: We analyzed restricted-use data from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, including approximately 275,100 nationally-representative individuals aged 15-64. Individual-level data were linked with county- and state-level labor-market and conte

In recent years, methamphetamine (METH) misuse in the US has been rapidly increasing, and there is no FDA-approved pharmacotherapy for METH use disorder (MUD). We previously determined that ubiquitin-protein ligase parkin is involved in the regulation of METH addictive behaviors in rat models of MUD. Parkin is not yet a "druggable" drug target; therefore, this study aimed to determine which biological processes, pathways, and proteins downstream of parkin are likely drug targets against MUD. Employing young adult Long Evans male rats with parkin deficit or excess in the nucleus accumbens (NAc)

OBJECTIVE: Impaired response inhibition is the core cognitive deficit in methamphetamine use disorder (MUD), and methamphetamine cue reactivity is a major factor that reduces inhibition efficiency. The authors sought to use cognition-guided neurofeedback to deactivate methamphetamine cue-related brain reactivity patterns in men with MUD to improve their response inhibition.
METHODS: A cognition-guided, closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback protocol was employed. Methamphetamine cue-related brain activity patterns were identified offline using multivariate pattern analysis of EEG data from all c

Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by binge drug taking episodes, intervals of abstinence, and relapses to drug use even during treatment. MUD has been modeled in rodents and investigators are attempting to identify its molecular bases. Preclinical experiments have shown that different schedules of methamphetamine self-administration can cause diverse transcriptional changes in the dorsal striatum of Sprague-Dawley rats. In the present review, we present data on differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified in the rat striatum following methamphe
