BACKGROUND: Disorders of the locomotor system in dogs, such as amputations or malformations, can be not only physically but also emotionally distressing. In this context, advances in medical and technological sciences offer tools and options with the aim of improving the quality of life of animals with locomotor problems. This case report aims to describe the custom development of a 3D exoprosthesis for a dog with an amputated hind limb.
CASE PRESENTATION: A female dog, mixed breed, approximately 5 years old, was admitted to the Veterinary Clinic of the Centro Universitário de João Pessoa-Bra

From 1975 to 1980, 79 major limb amputations were performed from a group of 552 lower extremity vascular reconstructions with glutaraldehyde-stabilized umbilical vein grafts. All amputations were performed in instances in which limb salvage had been the indication for the attempted bypass (n = 520)--an incidence of 15.2%. Twelve of 51 below-knee (BK) amputations were converted to above-knee (AK) levels (crude failure rate, 23.5%). The highest crude failure rate occurred after failed bypass to the popliteal artery (33.3%); the lowest occurred after failed tibial bypass (16.7%), and the peroneal

Patients who have undergone a lower extremity amputation may develop an unstable soft tissue envelope of the amputation stump. This envelope may result in pain that prohibits prosthetic use or may become chronically infected. Providing stable soft tissue coverage at the amputation site may provide relief from pain and cure of infection. Additionally, a stable amputation soft tissue envelope may assist with the ability of that patient to maintain his or her existing level of ambulation, overall sense of wellness, and ability to maintain social integration. Salvage of a lower extremity amputatio

With the intention towards more distal amputation of the lower extremity for peripheral vascular disease, failure of amputation wound healing remains a common clinical problem. Because calf blood flow correlates well with the indirect systolic ankle pressure, this pressure could be a prognostic guide to the outcome of amputation wound healing. To evaluate the clinical role of systolic ankle pressure measurements for selecting the most appropriate level of amputation, data of 93 patients undergoing 100 amputations were studied retrospectively. Of the 54 initial below knee (BK) amputations 83% h

BACKGROUND: Patients with lower extremity amputation frequently suffer from socket-related problems. This seriously limits prosthesis use, level of activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). An additional problem in patients with lower extremity amputation are asymmetries in gait kinematics possibly accounting for back pain. Bone-anchored prostheses (BAPs) are a possible solution for socket-related problems. Knowledge concerning the level of function, activity and HRQoL after surgery is limited. The aims of this ongoing study are to: a) describe changes in the level of function, acti

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Circumcision is the most common surgical procedure done in boys. Its complication varies from minor to severe. In most of African countries circumcision is often performed by traditional circumcisers. The management of penile glans amputation depends on the duration before presentation with auto-transplantation being the favorable management in acute phase of presentation. The amputation of the glans is a serious complication of circumcision because it can derange the urinary and sexual functions of a patient and may lead into psychological instability and low self

The author analyses the aesthetic aspects of the hand in three circumstances: trauma, rheumatism, and ageing. He describes the unsightly appearance of certain grafts and flaps and certain amputation stumps and malunions following trauma and emphasizes the cosmetic indication for finger transfer to an adjacent finger in four-finger hands. The main indications for rheumatic digital deformities concern distal deformities: DIP arthrodesis or arthroplasty depending on the finger. In the context of ageing of the hand, related to excess skin and prominent veins, the author proposes a one-stage operat…

Branches of the trigeminal nerve, which innervates the beak in the chicken, were damaged after partial beak amputation (beak trimming) and degeneration in the nerve extended from 2 to 3 mm proximal to the cut stumps. Within 10 days the damaged nerves showed regeneration and axon sprouts had been formed. This neural regeneration was rapid so that by 20 to 30 days bundles of regenerating fibres were present and neuromas formed adjacent to the scar tissue of the stump of the beak. These neuromas became more extensive over the 70 day observation period.

This case involves a 58-year-old man who sustained a severe left forearm injury from a motor vehicle accident. Imaging revealed comminuted fractures and arterial occlusions in the left forearm. As the injury was crush type and exploration revealed vessels with avulsion, the decision was made to perform amputation due to nonsalvageability. The patient underwent irrigation, debridement, and amputation, followed by coverage via a full-thickness skin graft from the amputated hand. Postoperatively, the patient received antibiotics and wound care, resulting in successful graft integration and healin

A retrospective study was undertaken in two patient populations to establish the failure rate of Syme's amputation. Failure was defined as an amputation requiring revision to a more proximal level. For traumatic lesions of the foot the failure rate was 29% and for dysvascular lesions it was 41%. The long-term functional results in 55 patients who underwent Syme's amputation for traumatic, dysvascular or congenital lesions were studied. Overall, 73% had good function. The ideal Syme's stump, where the fat pad is centred securely over the distal tibia, was noted in only 22% of patients. The auth

The peripheral bronchial fistula, which is not visible by direct endoscopic examination, is closed by endoscopic application of fibrin glue. Sometimes only conservative therapy with irrigation of the pleural space is sufficient and effective. The postlobectomy fistula of the bronchus stump is treated by preoperative puncture and irrigation of the pleural space, followed by a corrective reamputation of the stump of the bronchus or a sleeve resection with end-to-end anastomosis. The post-pneumonectomy fistula has to be corrected by preoperative irrigation of the pleural space and a corrective se

UNLABELLED: Crush injury with bone loss results in shortening the length of the thumb. Most of the immediate intervention is amputation and stump closure. Revision amputation with stump closure gives loss of functional length and the patient is unable to do daily activities as before. In most of all hand functions, the opposition of the thumb plays an important role. Reconstruction of the thumb with iliac crest bone graft with its functional length is one of the major achievements for the patient. As in our case, the patient is right-hand dominant he is more concerned about the functional leng

BACKGROUND: The Pirogoff amputation (1854) was initially developed to provide full-weight-bearing stumps and therefore allow a short ambulation without prosthesis. Modifications of the original technique including Boyd (1939) and the "Modified Pirogoff" were developed, which further reduced complications and improved the outcome. However, the current evidence regarding the techniques is scarce. The functional outcome, survivorship and complication rates are unknown. It was the purpose of this study to expand the knowledge with a retrospective case series and ultimately summarize and analyze th

Stump overgrowth requiring surgical revisions occurred in 58 of 1,015 (5.7%) skeletally immature patients with congenital and acquired amputations. Acquired below-knee amputation was the most common type needing revision (18.5%), and the congenital group not requiring a conversion had the least overgrowth problem (1.7%). When the primary amputation occurred after the age of 12 years or when disarticulation was carried out, revisions were unnecessary. The younger the patient, the greater the incidence of repeated revisions. Study of the histological changes in eight juvenile congenital and acqu

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue reconstruction in aged patients is challenging. Free tissue transfer can be carried out in healthy patients with a high success rate despite old age. When free tissue transfer is contraindicated in multimorbid patients, local flaps are often chosen, which are associated with a high complication rate. Such salvage interventions must be selected so that an amputation is not disadvantageously influenced by the selection of the donor site or is even impossible.
METHODS: The three distally based local flaps the sural artery flap, peroneus brevis muscle flap and perforator-b

The positioning of the patient on the fracture table is critical for the successful reduction and operative fixation of intertrochanteric hip fractures. However, this manipulation is challenging with patients who have undergone amputations of their legs. A 97-year-old man presented to the emergency department with symptom of right hip pain following a mechanical fall. He had a below-knee amputation on his right leg following a traffic accident as a 19-year-old and had a below-knee patellar tendon bearing prosthesis fitted to his lower limb for mobility. Radiographs of his pelvis revealed a dis

Limb regeneration requires rebuilding the missing structures and integrating them with stump tissues. Osteoclast-mediated tissue resorption is essential for skeletal integration during regeneration. However, it is unknown if skeletal tissue composition impacts its resorption and, if so, how it is regulated. Here, we show that osteoclast-mediated skeletal resorption is activated in amputations damaging the diaphysis, but not the epiphysis, of skeletal elements. We found that amputations in the calcified diaphysis trigger the sustained expression of RANKL and the chemokine Loc483, and that the l

Since 1976 we attempted to avoid an above-knee (AK) amputation in favor of a knee disarticulation. From 1976 to 1979 83 patients with an average age of 72 years could be amputated through the knee and 55 patients with average age of 73 years had to be submitted to an AK-amputation. As compared to the AK-amputation the transgenicular (TG) resection has the following advantages: 1) Lower postoperative mortality (TG 10%, AK 33%). --2) Higher prosthetic fitting rate (TG 77%, AK 61%). --3) Significantly improved rehabilitation of the patient (walking with artificial limb: TG 67%, AK 20%). --The res

Functional reorganization has been well documented in the human adult brain after amputation of the arm. To assess the effects of amputation on the developing brain, we investigated six patients with upper limb amputation in early childhood and one with right dysmelia. Transcranial magnetic stimulation indicated contralateral cortical disinhibition and enlargement of the excitable area of the stump. FMRI data corroborated these plastic changes and also showed an ipsilateral functional reorganization. In the T1-weighted MRI, we found structural deformities of the contralateral and ipsilateral c
