CT-based morphological and morphometric assessment of the mandibular incisive canal and genial tubercles for sexual dimorphism.

This study aimed to perform a morphological and morphometric assessment of the mandibular incisive canal (MIC) and genial tubercles (GT) using computed tomography, in order to develop sex estimation formulas based on linear measurements in a Brazilian adult sample. An observational study was carried out using 300 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans from a pre-existing image database, comprising individuals aged between 21 and 50years, equally distributed between the sexes. The formulas for sex estimation presented, respectively, sensitivity and specificity of up to 71.3% and 80% % for M

Transforming ear anatomy education: Evaluating the impact of innovative teaching methods on medical students' learning outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: The human ear is a complex organ, crucial for hearing and balance, divided into three main parts - the external, middle, and inner ear. Traditional teaching methods for ear anatomy, involving textbooks and lectures, often tend to be inadequate in conveying the three-dimensional relationships and intricate structures, leading to lower retention rates and limited understanding in students. AIM: To evaluate the impact of low-cost innovative teaching methods on students' perceptions of learning the intricate details of the inner and middle ear, comparing their perspectives before an

The origin of middle ear ossicles: A narrative and illustrated historical review.

The development of the middle ear ossicles, (malleus, incus, and stapes,) has long been linked to the two first visceral (or branchial) arches. Meckel's cartilage, identified by Johann-Friedrich Meckel, is recognized as the first branchial arch cartilage, contributing to the formation of the malleus and incus. In contrast, Reichert's cartilage, associated with the second arch, is tied to the stapes. Despite these historical contributions, there remains significant debate among scientists regarding the exact roles each visceral arch plays in ossicular development, with various theories proposin

A systematic review and surgical anatomy of the greater omentum.

The greater omentum, a peritoneal fold derived from the dorsal mesentery, is critical in immune surveillance, inflammation regulation, and tissue repair. Its extensive vascular and lymphatic networks and immune-rich milky spots contribute to pathogen clearance, wound healing, and metabolic regulation. Despite its well-documented physiological roles, a comprehensive evaluation of its vascular and lymphatic architecture, embryological development, and clinical applications remains necessary to refine its use in pathology and surgical interventions. This review analyzes the greater omentum's stru

Effect of experimentally induced sepsis on the kidney and renal artery of adult male albino rats and the role of Boswellia serrata extract.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis can be cured with effective antibiotics against susceptible organisms if treatment is provided early and promptly. As a result of antibiotic resistance and chemotherapeutic agents' side effects, the use of these medications is restricted. Thus, the search for novel therapeutic targets and studies on the pathogenesis of sepsis has increased. In this study, we aimed to examine the treatment effects of Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) pre- or pre and post-treatment after sepsis induction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: adult male albino rats were assigned into 5 groups: control, BSE, se

Sexual dimorphism assessment through morphological analysis of the sella turcica in multislice computed tomography scans.

The sella turcica (ST) is a depression located within the sphenoid bone in the middle cranial fossa. It houses the pituitary gland and serves as a crucial cephalometric landmark for craniofacial growth assessment. Given that several studies have analyzed its dimensions using imaging, some researchers have proposed evaluating its morphology in relation to sex, considering it a potential structure for human identification in forensic anthropology. This study aimed to assess sexual dimorphism through morphological evaluation of the ST in multislice computed tomography (MSCT) scans of individuals

A unique variant of a persistent trigeminal artery combined with an accessory anterior cerebral artery.

The cerebral arterial circle exhibits considerable variability with clinical relevance in radiological and neurosurgical practice. Among its rarest variants are persistent embryonic arteries, notably the persistent trigeminal artery (PTA). We present a unique case identified via magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in a 39-year-old female, revealing a PTA giving rise to the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA). An accessory anterior cerebral artery (aACA) emerged from the anterior communicating artery. The coexistence of these two rare variants forms a peculiar arterial pattern. Interest

The mental ossicles: A narrative review.

The mental ossicles, or the ossicula mentalia, are small anatomical structures located at the midline between the left and right mandibular halves in infants. They appear between 6 and 7 weeks of gestational age and disappear before or shortly after birth. Although they play a crucial role in shaping the human chin in the developmental stage, the mental ossicles are rarely described in the scientific literature. In this paper, we searched the available literature on "PubMed" and "Google Scholar" databases. Search terms such as "mental ossicles", "ossicula mentalia", and "mental bones" were use

Fortuitous discovery of a superior and posterior pancreaticoduodenal artery originating from the right branch of the hepatic artery during cadaver dissection.

INTRODUCTION: The duodeno-pancreatic region is a highly vascularized area. The superior and posterior pancreaticoduodenal artery is a vessel primarily originating from the gastroduodenal artery. It exhibits rare anatomical variations, such as its emergence from the right branch of the hepatic artery, which we fortuitously identified during a cadaver dissection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The body studied in this dissection was from cadavers donated to science at the Anatomy Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine in Amiens. This dissection was part of a Master's project aimed at studying the branch

Craniofacial dysmorphism of osteogenesis imperfecta mouse and effect of cathepsin K knockout: Preliminary craniometry observations.

OBJECTIVES: In addition to bone fragility, patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type III have typical craniofacial abnormalities, such as a triangular face and maxillary micrognathism. However, in the osteogenesis imperfecta mouse (oim), a validated model of OI type III, few descriptions exist of craniofacial phenotype. Treatment of OI mostly consists of bisphosphonate administration. Cathepsin K inhibition has been tested as a promising therapeutic approach for osteoporosis and positive results were observed in long bones of cathepsin K knocked out oim (oim/CatK-/-). This craniometry st

Anatomical variations in the course of spinal accessory nerve in the neck triangles: A descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Spinal Accessory Nerve (SAN), which innervates the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and trapezius muscles, is closely related to the internal jugular vein (IJV) in the anterior triangle of the neck and passes superficially in the posterior triangle. Injury to SAN is a major complication of level II neck dissection, leading to shoulder syndrome. The present study aims to assess the course and its relation to the SCM muscle and IJV in the Tamil ethnolinguistic groups in South India. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The anterior and posterior triangles of the neck were dissected in 28 formalin-fixed

Multiple scapula defects or foramina or both?

The current bone report describes multiple openings identified in a dried scapula of a subject of unknown age and gender. Multiple openings (twelve) were identified in the subscapular fossa and were apparent at the infraspinatus fossa. These openings coexisted with a suprascapular foramen and an osteophyte at the inferomedial border of the foramen. In the current literature, two uncommon variants of the scapula were described: foramina and defects. It is still unclear how these two structures are differentiating. Both of them are results of abnormal ossification of the scapula. Clinicians shou

Exploring the genetics, mechanisms, and therapeutic innovations in non-syndromic tooth agenesis.

Tooth agenesis is the congenital absence of one or more teeth in the normal series due to failures during dental development in the odontogenesis process. Although tooth development mechanisms are more precise in the literature, the etiology of non-syndromic tooth agenesis remains partially unknown. Mutations in genes that regulate the transcription factors involved in tooth development are associated with this condition. Despite advances in genetic research, questions remain about whose understanding might enable more precise and customized treatments. This study aimed to explain the molecula

Cheiloscopy: A crucial technique in forensics for personal identification and its admissibility in the Court of Justice.

In every criminal inquiry, identification is of utmost importance. Cheiloscopy is a technique used in forensic investigation that focuses on identifying people from their lip prints. Just like fingerprints, each person's lip crease pattern is unique. Moreover, Lip prints are seen to remain consistent throughout an individual's life. Lip prints can therefore be used to confirm if a person was at the crime scene or not. Cheiloscopy is used to examine the sulci labiorum, or "lip prints," which are the wrinkling and furrows on the labial mucosa that produce a distinctive pattern. The current revie
