Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma with positive tuberin expression--case report.

An 11-year-old male presented with subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) without other manifestations of tuberous sclerosis such as facial angiofibroma, epilepsy, or mental retardation. The diagnosis was "possible tuberous sclerosis complex" (TSC). Total resection of the tumor was performed. Immunohistochemical study revealed positive tuberin expression. In general, loss of tuberin is thought to be critical to the TSC phenotype. Our case demonstrated clear expression of tuberin in the SEGA specimen.

Four unusual neoplasms of the nasopharynx.

Epidermoid carcinoma and angiofibroma are the commonly diagnosed lesions of the nasopharynx. Less common are unusual tumors of epithelial origin as well as those from endothelial and mesenchymal precursors. Otolaryngologists must be knowledgeable in the literature associated with these tumors to facilitate early diagnosis and to institute appropriate therapy. Cases of verrucous carcinoma, inverted papilloma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma are presented. Current literature is reviewed and accepted modes of treatment are outlined.

Sclerotic fibroma-like change in various neoplastic and inflammatory skin lesions: is sclerotic fibroma a distinct entity?

Sclerotic fibroma was first described in association with Cowden's disease by Weary et al. in 1972. In 1989, Rapini and Golitz detailed 11 cases of solitary sclerotic fibroma (SFS) in the absence of Cowden's disease, suggesting the term SFS of the skin. Classic histological features include hypocellular, hyalinized bands of collagen sharply demarcated from the surrounding skin. Numerous authors have described sclerotic fibroma-like changes in other entities including melanocytic nevi, dermatofibromas, lipomas, tendon sheath fibromas, giant cell collagenomas, neurofibromas, angiofibromas, eryth…

Giant renal angiomyolipomas in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Angiomyolipomas are the benign tumours of the kidney which occur either sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Symptoms typically develop with an increase in the size of the lesion. We present a clinical image of a patient with giant renal angiomyolipomas who had other clinical features of TSC (facial angiofibromas, periungual fibroma, subependymal nodules in the brain, and lung cysts).

Mammary and vaginal myofibroblastomas are genetically related lesions: fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis shows deletion of 13q14 region.

Partial monosomy 13q, a chromosomal alteration originally reported in spindle cell lipoma, has also been documented in a few cases of mammary myofibroblastoma. Subsequently, a monoallelic loss of RB1 and FOXO1, located on 13q14, was identified in some cases of cellular angiofibroma, a benign stromal tumor of the lower female genital tract. This cytogenetic finding and the overlapping morphologic and immunohistochemical features shared by spindle cell lipoma, mammary myofibroblastoma, and cellular angiofibroma strongly suggest a histogenetic link among these tumors. Recently, we have emphasized…

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Associated with Hypothyroidism: A Case Report.

To investigate the clinical features of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and to improve the understanding of TSC. Analysis of clinical and image data of a patient diagnosed as TSC. The symptoms of TSC are epilepsy, intelligent reduction, facial angiofibroma, renal hamartoma, and so on, and it may be associated with hypothyroidism. At present, TSC has no specific treatment. TSC is rarely in clinical practice. It is necessary to improve the understanding of it. Early detection, early diagnosis, and early intervention should be done.

A novel de novo mutation in the TSC2 gene in a Chinese patient with tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a multisystem genetic syndrome, often affects the central nervous system. The age of onset of TSC ranges from 0 to 15 years. The clinical features manifest as a combination of seizures, mental retardation, facial angiofibroma, renal angiomyolipoma, and cardiac rhabdomyoma. Most cases of TSC are caused by mutations of the TSC1 or TSC2 genes. We characterized a Chinese patient with a novel de novo mutation in the TSC2 gene associated with the TSC detected by next-generation sequencing.

Cutaneous lesions associated to multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 1.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a genetic disease that predisposes to endocrine tumour development. Some cutaneous lesions (angiofibromas, collagenomas, melanosis guttaca, lipomas, melanomas, 'cafe au lait macules') have been associated to this syndrome. We compare the prevalence of cutaneous lesion in affected patients with their non-carrier relatives. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We studied 9 patients with MEN1 and 20 non-carrier, first-degree relatives. Genetic screening was realized in all of them. Patients were examined by dermatologist, and biopsy was performed when ne…

A Rare Case of Intravesical Angiomyofibroblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: To study the first reported case of intravesical angiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB). AMFB is an uncommon benign mesenchymal lesion, mostly described in the lower female genital tract, especially in the vulva and less commonly in the vagina. It is rarely seen in the male genital tract. The importance of this rare neoplasm is related to its potential mimicry of more infiltrative and prognostically less favorable lesions, such as aggressive angiomyxomas, that are found in the same anatomic area. METHODS: A 26-year-old man presented to us with hematuria. Investigations revealed an intralumin

Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz's syndrome) manifesting as condyloma acuminatum: report of a case and review of the literature.

A new case of Goltz's syndrome, focal dermal hypoplasia, is documented. The literature is reviewed. The composite individuality warrants considering Golt'z syndrome a separate syndrome in the ectodermal dysplasias. Caution against diagnosing "condyloma-like" lesions occurring in ectodermally dysplastic patients as condyloma acuminatum is urged. Neoplastic transformation and the tendency to recurrence after surgical exicision of the cutaneous angiofibromas pose a difficult problem in surgical management.

Angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of a rare benign mesenchymal tumor.

Angiomyofibroblastoma is a rare benign distinctive mesenchymal tumor that occurs in the genital pelviperineal region, commonly the vulva and vagina. We report a case of angiomyofibroblastoma in a 42-year-old woman, presenting as a "cystic mass" located subcutaneously in the right labial area of the vulva. Recognition of this entity is based on specific histological and immunopathological features, and the correct treatment is important because of the aggressive behavior of other related mesenchymal tumors of the vulva and vagina, such as angiomyxoma and cellular angiofibroma.

Recurrent retroperitoneal hemorrhage in a patient with tuberous sclerosis complex: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder. It is characterized by seizures, mental retardation and hamartomatous lesions, including facial angiofibroma, subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, cardiac rhabdomyoma and renal angiomyolipoma (AML). AMLs can bleed severely in the retroperitoneal space. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present the case of a TSC patient presenting with recurrent severe episodes of retroperitoneal hemorrhage from AMLs successfully managed by angio-embolization. CONCLUSION: Transarterial embolization is effective in preventing and contr…

Estimation of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in chronic rhinitis.

The turbinates of 38 patients with chronic rhinitis were examined biochemically for oestrogen and progesterone receptors. Low levels of oestrogen-receptor-like activity (1-20 fmol/mg protein) were found in 50% of patients of both sexes. Progesterone receptor activity was also weak (1-16 fmol/mg protein) but was present only in 5 female patients. Immunocytochemical assay failed to demonstrate focal areas of oestrogen receptor activity. One juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma was negative for both oestrogen and androgen receptors. Other possible mechanisms of hormonal action are considered.

A case of valproic acid-induced acute pancreatitis in tuberous sclerosis coexisting with end-stage renal disease.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TCS) is a genetic disorder with a variable clinical presentation. It is commonly characterized by seizures, mental retardation and cutaneous angiofibromas. Renal manifestations frequently include angiomyolipomas and cysts which lead to chronic kidney disease. We report a case of valproic acid-induced acute pancreatitis in a dialysis patient affected by TCS. The case demonstrates the importance of assessing antiepileptic drug treatment in dialysis patients.

Autopsy findings in a case of tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis is a neurocutaneous disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance. It is characterized by the triad of seizures, mental retardation, angiofibromas of the face though the triad is not always complete. We incidentally encountered a case of tuberous sclerosis in a case of hanging. He was an epileptic. Autopsy findings included unusual findings of myocardial and renal lipomata. He also had cortical thickening of bones, cortical tubers of brain, polycystic kidney disease.
