PURPOSE: Obstructive apnea is sometimes seen in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. The cause of apnea is not limited to macroglossia … d the hypopharynx. Central tongue resection and the division of the frenulum linguae for associated ankyloglossia were performed 97 days after birth. One month after surgery, apneic events disappeared and SpO2 below 95% occupied only 1% of the total sleep time. CASE 2: Obstructive AI indicated 28.1. Division of the frenulum linguae and anterior glossopexy were …

In ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx (ADEL) the tongue is located forward and as a result the epiglottis is elevated and leans towards the mouth. The larynx is also raised and curves ventrally. Various symptoms have been observed as a result of this condition. Correction of the glosso-larynx (CGL) is the operation performed to treat ADEL. The CGL procedure and the results obtained with it are reported in this paper. In addition, we studied the following six parameters using head and neck X-rays before and after CGL (the changes in these parameters as a result of CGL are…

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is associated with diverse oral manifestations, which can potentially involve both hard and soft tissues, dependi … recessive dystrophic EB (generalized, 100%; localized, 92.3%). Obliteration of the oral vestibule, ankyloglossia, and microstomia were consistent findings in generalized recessive dystrophic EB. Oral milia were present in all major EB categories, most prevalently in the dystrophic forms, but were not seen in all the distinct EB subtypes. These findings indicat …

In this article, I describe the effects of home interventions on latching difficulty that persisted for 27 days for a mother-neonate dyad. The neonate manifested latching difficulty immediately after cesarean birth, and it became worse when nipple shields, bottles, and pacifiers were introduced. Manual expression and an electric pump were implemented when the neonate started losing weight, resulting in reduced frequency of breastfeeding directly at the breast. Additionally, the neonate continued to have latching difficulty after frenotomy. The use of home-based interventions supported ongoing

A 4-month-old boy presented with a cystic swelling at the floor of the mouth causing acute airway compromise. The only previous history of note, was a tongue tie release at 3 days old. CT scan suggested a dermoid cyst with extensive floor of mouth abscess. He had an excision of the cyst and drainage of the superimposed abscess and made a good recovery. The histology report revealed a dermoid cyst which is a rare diagnosis in a child, particularly within the oral cavity. Early treatment is required to remove these lesions especially when they cause airway compromise or swallowing difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has abundant biological and psychological benefits. Effective breastfeeding requires good latching on, which is possible when the infant is able to cup around the maternal areola with his tongue. One of the most common conditions resulting in poor latching on is tongue-tie.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of tongue-tie with subsequent breastfeeding difficulties and other factors affecting the success of breastfeeding in newborn infants.
METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional study of healthy Thai infants without contraindications for breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by skin and mucosal fragility, leading to significant oral health challenges due to mucosal blisters, pain, up to microstomia and ankyloglossia in severe cases. This retrospective study aimed to assess oral health in EB patients compared to a healthy control group to develop tailored dental protocols.
METHODS: Medical records and panoramic x-rays of EB patients (n = 40) treated at the Center for Dental Medicine, University Medical Center Freiburg (2014-2024), were analyzed and compared to a healthy control group (…

Introduction: Laser surgery has been considered a popular alternative over conventional modalities in dentistry during the last few years. Among different types of lasers, diode lasers have gained special attention in oral soft tissue surgery. Case Reports: Five patients were referred to a private office. After careful evaluation of medical history and oral examination, oral diagnosis and treatment plan of each patient was established as follows: (1) A 21-year-old female with ankyloglossia (tongue-tie); (2) A 65-year-old female with a poor denture fit needing vestibuloplasty and frenectomy; (3…

METHODS: From March 2003 to … ous fistula after 10-15 days of operation and were cured by secondary operation. No complication of ankyloglossia and tumor relapse occurred. The operation results were satisfactory.
CONCLUSION: Platysma myocutaneous flap has generous blood supply, it is useful in reconstruction of oral tissue defects.

INTRODUCTION: Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, occurs in 4-10% of the population. Treatment of tongue-tie has increased by 420% in Australia between 2006 and 2016 and 866% in the United States between 1997 and 2012. Despite limited evidence, it has been suggested that tongue-tie can result in speech sound disorder (SSD). This study aimed to investigate tongue mobility and speech production outcomes in children with and without tongue-tie diagnoses.
METHOD: Fifty-nine children aged 2; 1 to 4; 11 years were recruited and formed three groups: treated tongue-tie (TTT), untreated tongue-tie (UTT) and…
