The Extraordinary Case of a Woman with a 30-Year-Long Diffuse Leishmaniasis Cured with One Single Ampoule of Intranasal Pentavalent Antimoniate.

Infection with Leishmania amazonensis and L. mexicana may lead to diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. The cure is exceptional, especially for the strange case of this lady. Case report: The patient acquired the disease in childhood and remained with lesions for over 30 years, albeit several treatments. She worsened after a pregnancy, developing disseminated lesions. Miltefosine with amphotericin B and pentamidine resulted in remission. Lesions reappeared after one year, accompanied by intra-nasal infiltration of the disease. The nasal spraying of a single ampoule of pentavalent antimoniate result

The Leishmania antigen-specific pro-inflammatory response in cutaneous leishmaniasis is linked to disease progression but not to the therapeutic failure of pentavalent antimonials.

High levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in cutaneous leishmaniasis patients are associated with tissue damage and ulcer development. We fo … levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF and IL-1-β and patients' response to pentavalent antimony treatment. Our data suggest that while the Leishmania antigen-specific pro-inflammatory cytokines investigated may lead to ulcer development, they do not influence therapeutic failure in cutaneous leishmaniasis patients.

Meglumine antimoniate intralesional infiltration for localised cutaneous leishmaniasis: a single arm, open label, phase II clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a world-wide health problem which currently lacks effective, affordable and easy to use therapy. Recently, the meglumine antimoniate (MA) intralesional infiltration was included among the acceptable therapies for New World leishmaniasis. While this approach is attractive, there is currently little evidence to support its use in Americas. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide information about effectiveness and safety of a standardised MA intralesional infiltration technique for the treatment of CL. METHODS: It is a single-arm phase II cl

Overlooked Pb-(Sn)-(Sb)-(As) oxide particles in incineration bottom ash: Particle-scale occurrence, alteration and potential relevance to antimony and arsenic mobility.

Antimony (Sb) is a critical metal and an emerging hazardous pollutant, chemically akin to arsenic (As), and is widely used as antimonial lead in Pb-(Sn)-Sb-(As) alloys. A substantial fraction of the Sb fed to municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators remains in incineration bottom ash (IBA), where Sb leaching, together with that of As, restricts IBA reuse. We document, at the particle scale, the occurrence of Pb-(Sn)-(Sb)-(As) oxide particles in the 0.25-2 mm fractions of IBA from several facilities in France. Seven particles were characterized in detail by optical microscopy, SEM-BSE-XEDS, PXR…

Synthesis, structure and orange-light emission of a zero-dimensional antimony(III) halide with the 4,4'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)dipyridin-1-ium cation.

Exploring orange-light-emitting lead-free halides with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) is a significant challenge in luminescent materials research. Herein, a zero-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid halide, namely, 4,4'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)dipyridin-1-ium pentachloridoantimonate(III), (C12H14N2)[SbCl5] or [H2bpa][SbCl5], where bpa is 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)ethane, was synthesized via acid solution evaporation. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1. The asymmetric unit consists of an [SbCl5]2- anion and two half [H2bpa]2+ cations. The [SbCl5]2- anion and [H2bpa]2+

Antimony- and NSAID-Induced Hepatotoxicity at the Molecular Crossroads: Redox, Inflammasome and Programmed Cell-Death Networks as Therapeutic Targets for Natural Hepatoprotective Agents.

Drug- and metal-induced liver damage (DILI/MILI) continues to be a predominant cause of acute hepatic failure globally, with two clinically significant but mechanistically underexplored triggers being the metalloid antimony (Sb) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). This review consolidates current molecular findings about the convergence of Sb(III)/Sb(V) species and NSAID reactive metabolites on a common hepatotoxic framework. Hepatic organic anion-transporting polypeptides and multidrug-resistance proteins regulate the sinusoidal uptake and canalicular efflux of both subs…

Exploring the role of Arthrospira platensis and earthworms (Lumbricus castaneus) biosystem in mitigating antimony toxicity and enhancing the biochemical properties of cucurbit plants.

The rising industrial use of antimony (Sb) has led to its widespread pollution, negatively impacting plant growth as an emerging pollutant. Limited studies have explored the integrated biosystems involving Arthrospira platensis (AP) and/or earthworms (EW) on cucurbit plants under Sb-stress. This study uncovered the toxicity of three levels of 'Sb' on soil characters and biochemical changes of cucurbit leaves with/without EW and/or AP. The GC-mass analysis of AP-extract documented the presence of 33 bioactive compounds; including 11,13-dimethyl-12-tetradecen-1-ol acetate, lanostane-7,11-dione, …

Synthesis and characterizations of iron antimony oxide nanoparticles and its applications in electrochemical detection of carbendazim in apple juice and paddy water samples.

This study reports a facile sonohydrolysis synthesis route to prepare the iron antimony oxide (FeSbO4) nanoparticles for the trace level electrochemical sensing of fungicide carbendazim (CRBZ). As prepared FeSbO4 nanoparticles show a nano-cubes-like morphology with uniform distributions that crystallized in the tetragonal phase. The diffraction studies reveal that the FeSbO4 nanoparticles have high crystallinity and high purity. Furthermore, the other structural properties and morphology are characterized by XRD, Raman, XPS, HRTEM, and FESEM analysis. The electrochemical characterizations of F…

Accurate and Sensitive Analytical Strategy for the Determination of Antimony: Hydrogen Assisted T-Shaped Slotted Quartz Tube-Atom Trap-Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry.

Antimony is known to have some adverse health effects on human health. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) is a widely used instrumental for the determination of antimony and other metals. However, it lacks the sensitivity to determine these metals at trace levels. This study was aimed at overcoming this setback by using hydrogen assisted T-shaped slotted quartz tube technique to preconcentrate and determine antimony by FAAS. All the system parameters were optimized to enhance the detection power of the system. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the limits of detection and quan…

Expression analysis of activated protein kinase C gene (LACK1) in antimony sensitive and resistant Leishmania tropica clinical isolates using real-time RT-PCR.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to pentavalent antimonial drugs has become a serious problem in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis in some endemic areas. Investigations on molecular markers involved in drug resistance are essential for monitoring of the disease. Leishmania-activated C kinase gene (LACK1) is involved in multiple central processes such as signal transduction. According to the probable role of the LACK1 gene in antimony resistance, we used real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to investigate the expression of this gene in clinical L. tropica strains, which …
