Integrating etiological models of social anxiety and depression in youth: evidence for a cumulative interpersonal risk model.

Models of social anxiety and depression in youth have been developed separately, and they contain similar etiological influences. Given the high comorbidity of social anxiety and depression, we examine whether the posited etiological constructs are a correlate of, or a risk factor for, social anxiety and/or depression at the symptom level and the diagnostic level. We find core risk factors of temperament, genetics, and parent psychopathology (i.e., depression and anxiety) are neither necessary nor sufficient for the development of social anxiety and/or depression. Instead, aspects of children'

Histone Modifications in a Mouse Model of Early Adversities and Panic Disorder: Role for Asic1 and Neurodevelopmental Genes.

Hyperventilation following transient, CO2-induced acidosis is ubiquitous in mammals and heritable. In humans, respiratory and emotional hypersensitivity to CO2 marks separation anxiety and panic disorders, and is enhanced by early-life adversities. Mice exposed to the repeated cross-fostering paradigm (RCF) of interference with maternal environment show heightened separation anxiety and hyperventilation to 6% CO2-enriched air. Gene-environment interactions affect CO2 hypersensitivity in both humans and mice. We therefore hypothesised that epigenetic modifications and increased expression of ge

Obsessional stat es. A study in the relationship between abnormalities occurring at the time of birth and the subsequent development of obsessional symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to examine the theory that there is a positive relationship between the occurrence of abnormalities at the time of birth and the subsequent development of obsessional states. While an abnormal birth may result in minimal brain damage this is not necessarily the significant factor, as a separation of mother and baby in the immediate neonatal period, Which usually follows an abnormal birth, may be of more relevance. Observations are made on certain phenomenological aspects on obsessions in patients who give a history of abnormal birth as compared with those patients

Transvertism: a disorder of the sense of self.

Transvestism is not simply a sexual disorder, but is best understood as primarily a disorder of the sense of self. A descriptive background of transvestism is provided through a review of developmental history, clinical course, presonality structure, and family history. The predominant transvestic fantasies and their modes of enactment are described. The disorder of the sence of self that gives rise to transvestic behavior is identified as a split in the ego into incompatible male and female gender identities. The split is attributed to an early identification with the mother as a defense agai

Exploring the impact of androgen levels on depression and anxiety in adolescent females: a clinical perspective.

OBJECTIVES: Depression and anxiety are rare disorders that can be seen in childhood. Anxiety disorders are more common. The underlying causes of these mental disorders are generally unknown. Changes in the body caused by hyperandrogenism may lead to mental disorders. In this study, we investigated the association of androgen excess with depression and anxiety in adolescent girls. METHODS: Adolescent girls with elevated androgen levels were evaluated using the DSC and SCARED scales and underwent a child psychiatric evaluation. Physical examination and the relationship between scale scores and

Perceived family impact of preschool anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the perceived impact of child anxiety disorders on family functioning, because such impact is a key predictor of mental health service receipt. In addition, we examined the relative impact of preschool anxiety compared to that of other early childhood disorders, and whether this impact persisted after accounting for the effects of comorbidity, or varied by child age and sex. METHOD: Drawing from a pediatric primary-care clinic and oversampling for children at risk for anxiety, 917 parents of preschoolers (aged 2-5 years) completed a diagnostic interview and reported on

Developmental trajectories of adolescent anxiety disorder symptoms: a 5-year prospective community study.

OBJECTIVE: This study prospectively examined the developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample of adolescents from the general population. METHOD: Two cohorts of early and middle adolescents (1,318 junior high and high school students) completed the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders during 5 consecutive years. The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders is a questionnaire that measures self-rated child and adolescent anxiety symptoms that map onto DSM-IV-TR anxiety disorders. At the first wave of measurement, the early and middle ado

Consequences of early life stress on genomic landscape of H3K4me3 in prefrontal cortex of adult mice.

BACKGROUND: Maternal separation models in rodents are widely used to establish molecular mechanisms underlying prolonged effects of early life adversity on neurobiological and behavioral outcomes in adulthood. However, global epigenetic signatures following early life stress in these models remain unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we carried out a ChIP-seq analysis of H3K4 trimethylation profile in the prefrontal cortex of adult male mice with a history of early life stress. Two types of stress were used: prolonged separation of pups from their mothers (for 3 h once a day, maternal separation,

Emetophobia: preliminary results of an internet survey.

Through electronic mail, we surveyed members of an internet support group for emetophobia (fear of vomiting). Respondents were 50 women and 6 men with a mean age of 31 years. Results suggest that, for this sample, emetophobia is a disorder of early onset and chronic course, with highly persistent and intrusive symptoms. Emetophobia is implicated in social, home-marital, and occupational impairment and it causes significant constriction of leisure activities. Nearly half of women avoided or delayed becoming pregnant. About three quarters of respondents have eating rituals or significantly limit

Children with dyslexia in different cultures: Investigation of anxiety and coping strategies of children with dyslexia in Indonesia and Germany.

Hitherto the majority of research on anxiety and coping was undertaken on individuals with specific profiles (i.e., individuals with specific difficulties or in cross-cultural settings). However, to our knowledge, no studies have combined cross-cultural and specific difficulty settings to grant a complex analysis of this paradigm nor conducted an investigation of children to reveal the developmental trend in this phenomenon. This study investigates the anxiety profile and coping strategies of children with and without dyslexia from different cultures. A total of 124 children ranging from the a

Psychopathology in children of patients with panic disorder or animal phobia.

Several studies reveal a heightened risk for anxiety and other mental disorders in the offspring of patients with panic disorder and other anxiety disorders. Data on the specific type of transmitted disorders, however, are inconsistent. We investigated the specificity of the relationship between parents' and children's psychopathology. We assessed current and past mental disorders in 5- to 15-year-old children of patients with panic disorder (CPAN, n = 34), children of parents with no diagnosis of a mental disorder (CCON, n = 30) and children of animal phobics (CPHOB, n = 23) using a structure

Low doses of prenatal ethanol exposure and maternal separation alter HPA axis function and ethanol consumption in adult male rats.

Adverse maternal behaviors during pregnancy and unfavorable postnatal experiences during development are associated with an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, as well as, a vulnerability to alcohol addiction in adulthood. Here, we examined the effects of combined ethanol exposure during late pregnancy and postnatal maternal separation (MS) on HPA responsiveness, anxiety behavior and preference for alcohol consumption in adult male rats. Animals exposed to both conditions revealed a decrease in blood levels of allopregnanolone accompanied by increased anxiety behavior. In addit

Bridging the gap: unveiling key links between autism and anxiety symptoms in autistic children and youth using a network analysis in pooled data from four countries.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children experience significantly higher rates of anxiety compared to nonautistic children. The precise relations betwe … xiety-only network was highly connected and consisted of four key clusters: General Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, and Panic/Agoraphobia. These broadly aligned with the existing SCAS-P structure based on DSM-IV-TR criteria. In the autism-anxiety network, the structure of anxiety remained mostly stable, with autism features forming their own community. P …

Internalized Phobia, Community Connectedness, Outness, and Mental Health Risk and Protection in LGBTQ Persons.

BACKGROUND: Community connectedness, outness, and internalized phobia are potential protective and risk factors for mental health in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals. However, these interrelated factors have generally been examined in isolation and for the LGBTQ community in aggregate. As such, there may be undetected effects of factors on mental health for each LGBTQ group. OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between mental health (i.e., depression and anxiety) and risk/protective factors (i.e., internalized phobia, community connectedness, outness) in

Is Otalgia be a symptom of anxiety in children?

One of the common causes of ear pain (Otalgia) in children is the pain felt in the temporomandibular region due to bruxism, usually accompanied by stress and anxiety. The diagnosis and treatment of anxiety at an early age will affect the future lives of children. Our aim in the study was to investigate the presence and subtypes of anxiety in children with otalgia due to bruxism. In our study, 86 children aged between 6 and 16 years old who had ear pain and whose pain and tenderness were detected in the temporomandibular joint area and 40 healthy children were included as the control group. An Analysis of the Child Behavior Checklist Anxiety Problems Scale's Predictive Capabilities.

The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) is widely used to assess behavioral and emotional problems in youth. The CBCL Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)-Oriented Anxiety Problems subscale (CBCL-AP) was developed for the identification of DSM-IV anxiety disorders. Using data from 298 youth aged 6- to 18, the CBCL-AP scale was examined to determine its ability to differentially predict, via Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis, the presence of (a) generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), (b) separation anxiety disorder (SAD), (c) specific phobia (SPPH), or (d) the presence of any of the

The genetic and environmental structure of fear and anxiety in juvenile twins.

Fear and anxiety are conceptualized as responses to acute or potential threat, respectively. Adult twin studies found substantial interplay between genetic and environmental factors influencing fear disorders (phobias) and anxiety disorders. Research in children, however, has largely examined these factors independently. Thus, there exists a substantial knowledge gap regarding the underlying etiologic structure of these closely-related constructs during development. Symptom counts for five fear (criticism, the unknown, death, animal, medical) and four anxiety (generalized, panic, separation, s

Comorbid anxiety moderates the relationship between depression history and prefrontal EEG asymmetry.

The internalizing spectrum of psychiatric disorders-depression and anxiety-are common, highly comorbid, and challenging to treat. Individuals with childhood onset depression have a particularly poor prognosis. There is compelling evidence that individuals with depression display reduced resting-state EEG activity at sensors overlying the left prefrontal cortex, even during periods of remission, but it remains unknown whether this asymmetry is evident among individuals with a comorbid anxiety disorder. Here, we demonstrate that women with a history of childhood onset depression and no anxiety d
