[Clinical presentation of Kleine-Levin syndrome].

Objective: To analyze the clinical features of Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) patients. Methods: Clinical data of 44 patients with KLS of the Sleep Center of Peking University People's Hospital from January 2002 to July 2013 were systematically reviewed. The predisposing factors and clinical presentations were summarized, and compared with the data from a Western KLS study with a large subjects number. Nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) were conducted during relapse and remission period, respectively. HLA-DQB1*0602 gene were screened and analyzed. Results: Amon

A step towards developing the expertise to control hunger and satiety: regulatory role of satiomem--a membrane proteoglycan.

Regulation of hunger and satiety is a complex process thought to be controlled by a complex interplay of neurotransmitters in the hypothalamic region of the brain. Reduced food intake or anorexia has also been observed under various disease or disorder conditions including AIDS and cancer. On the other hand, increased appetite because of some impairment of central mechanisms regulating the food intake could also cause/obesity. A large number of substances including neuropeptides, hormones, drugs, and synthetic peptides have been implicated in the regulation of appetite and food intake behavior

Function of orexin-1 receptor signaling in the olfactory tubercle in odor-guided attraction and aversion.

While olfactory behaviors are influenced by neuromodulatory signals, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The olfactory tubercle (OT), a component of the olfactory cortex and ventral striatum, consists of anteromedial (am) and lateral (l) domains regulating odor-guided attractive and aversive behaviors, respectively, in which the amOT highly expresses various receptors for feeding-regulated neuromodulators. Here we show functions of appetite-stimulating orexin-1 receptor (OxR1) signaling in the amOT. When odor-food reward associated mice underwent OxR1 antagonist injection in the amOT, th

Agmatine attenuates lipopolysaccharide induced anorexia and sickness behavior in rats.

Sickness behavior is characterized by lethargy, reduced appetite, anhedonia and anxiety. It can be induced in experimental animals by bacterial endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We investigated the impact of intracerebroventricular agmatine injections (5-20μg/rat, icv) on sickness behavior induced by LPS (100μg/rat, ip) in rats. Rats challenged with LPS demonstrated hyperthermia, anorexia, anxiety, depression like phenomenon and reduction in body weights. Additionally, mediators of sickness behaviors, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) level in LPS treated rat serum we

Diet Protein Content and Individual Phenotype Affect Food Intake and Protein Appetence in Rats.

BACKGROUND: A low-protein diet can induce compensatory intake of excess energy. This must be better evaluated to anticipate the obesogenic risk that may result from the dietary recommendations for reducing animal protein consumption. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to further characterize the behavioral and physiological responses to a reduction in dietary protein and to identify the determinants of protein appetite. METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats [4 wk old, (mean ± SEM) 135 ± 32 g body weight] were fed a low-protein (LP; 6% energy value) or normal-protein (NP; 20%) diet for 8 wk. Food intake and

Ferulic acid, a phytochemical with transient anorexigenic effects in birds.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic acid found within the plant cell wall that has physiological benefits as an antioxidant. Although metabolic benefits of FA supplementation are described, lacking are reports of effects on appetite regulation. Thus, our objective was to determine if FA affects food or water intake, using chicks as a model. At 4 days post-hatch, broiler chicks were intraperitoneally injected with 0 (vehicle), 12.5, 25, or 50 mg/kg of FA. Chicks treated with 50 mg/kg of FA consumed 70% less food than controls at 30 min post-injection, and the effect dissipated thereafter. Water int

Feeding-induced changes of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH)-like immunoreactivity in goldfish brain.

Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) influences feeding behavior in the goldfish and exerts an anorexigenic action in goldfish brain, unlike its orexigenic action in mammals. Despite a growing body of knowledge concerning MCH function in mammals, the role of MCH in appetite has not yet been well studied in fish. The aim of the present study was to investigate the involvement of endogenous MCH in the feeding behavior of the goldfish. We examined the distribution of MCH-like immunoreactivity (MCH-LI) in the goldfish brain and the effect of feeding status

Pharmacologic therapies aid treatment for autism.

In the absence of other guidelines, practitioners often prescribe by analogy with roles of psychotropic medicines in other psychiatric disorders (e.g., the ability of serotonergic antidepressants to reduce compulsive behavior). There is a slow but steady accumulation of data supporting the use of psychotropic medications to manage certain symptoms in children with autism. These data support the use of stimulant medications for attention/hyperactivity symptoms, with willingness to suspend such treatment if a trial is unsuccessful. Risperidone is supported for other disruptive behaviors, especia

Great apes track hidden objects after changes in the objects' position and in subject's orientation.

Eight chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), five bonobos (Pan paniscus), five gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), and seven orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) were presented with two invisible object displacement tasks. In full view of the subject, a food item was hidden under one of three opaque cups resting on a platform and, after an experimental manipulation, the subject was allowed to select one of the cups. In the rotation task, the platform was rotated 180 degrees while the subject remained stationary. In the translocation task, the platform remained stationary while the subject walked to the opposite side f

Parental Perception of Comorbidities in Children With Dravet Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that children with Dravet syndrome may have additional common features beyond seizures and cognitive impairment. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a survey of caregivers of children with Dravet syndrome to identify and quantify their perception of associated symptoms in this population. METHODS: An electronic survey was developed in REDcap (Research Electronic Data Capture) and sent via e-mail to the participants on the Dravet Syndrome Foundation e-mail list. Questions focused on eating, sleep, behavior, and other symptoms that might be related to Drav

Linking drug and food addiction via compulsive appetite.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: 'Food addiction' is the subject of intense public and research interest. However, this nosology based on neurobehavioural similarities among obese individuals, patients with eating disorders and those with substance use disorders (drug addiction) remains controversial. We thus sought to determine which aspects of disordered eating are causally linked to preclinical models of drug addiction. We hypothesized that extensive drug histories, known to cause addiction-like brain changes and drug motivation in rats, would also cause addiction-like food motivation. EXPERIMENTAL

Energy density effects on food intake, appetite ratings, and loss of control in women with binge eating disorder and weight-matched controls.

Individuals with binge eating disorder have increased gastric capacity and may require excessive food intake and increased volume in the stomach to produce satiation. The present study examined whether lower energy density (ED) meals lead to lower energy intake more than higher-ED meals in women with binge eating disorder (BED) and weight-matched controls. Women with BED (n=15) and healthy weight-matched controls (n=15) were instructed to consume as much as they wished during two test meals on non-consecutive days. Participants were served two hedonically similar versions of a pasta salad (19%

Bombesin receptor subtype-3 modulates plasma insulin concentration.

Mice lacking a functional bombesin receptor subtype-3 (BRS-3) develop mild obesity. However, the origin of obesity in BRS-3 knockout (KO) mice remains unclear. We used a strain-crossing strategy to investigate the physiological role of the BRS-3 pathway. We crossed female heterozygous BRS-3 KO mice (X-/X) and male KK-Ay mice (Ay/+) to obtain BRS-3 KO/KK-Ay hybrid animals. In X-/Y:Ay/+ mice, plasma insulin concentrations were significantly higher, and on the oral glucose tolerance test, the additional secretion of insulin was impaired compared to other genotypes. Our results indicate that the B

The role of nasal chemical senses in garter snake response to airborne odor cues from prey.

Garter snakes increase tongue-flick rates in the presence of airborne odorants (amyl acetate, limonene, earthworm wash vapor, fish water vapor, earthworms, goldfish) but not water vapor. Main olfactory (MO) nerve lesions result in loss of this tongue-flick rate elevation in the presence of airborne odorants. Vomeronasal (VN) nerve lesions result in a diminution of tongue-flick rate elevation. Garter snakes discriminate between the 2 arms of a maze containing airborne earthworm odor as compared with a blank control. Following MO nerve lesions, snakes fail to make this discrimination. Following

Lateral bias for rotational behavior in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

This research examined lateral bias for rotational behavior in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). A symmetrical distribution of rotational bias was noted, with approximately equal numbers of subjects preferring to turn to the right and to the left. As a group, adults did not exhibit a lateral rotational bias. Immatures preferentially rotated to the left. Across subjects, the strength of rotational bias was positively related to the incidence of right-eyed looking. Rotational bias was not related to hand preference. The finding of analogous age-dependent patterns of rotational bias in capu

Eating pathology in bulimia nervosa.

Degree of eating pathology in bulimia nervosa was assessed using the Eating Behavior Rating Scale (EBRS) across three videotaped eating sessions. Twelve bulimic and 12 non-eating disordered subjects participated in this study. All subjects were filmed during a baseline meal (ad libitum), a high-calorie meal, and a low-calorie meal (both fixed amounts). Mean EBRS scores were significantly higher for bulimics (12.6 +/- 1.7) than for controls (3.9 +/- 0.9), suggesting a higher degree of eating pathology in these patients. Affect during eating was significantly more negative in the bulimic patient

Puncture marks on early African anthropoids.

Field studies of living primates have shown that primate predation is a rare event. This must also have been true for past primate communities. In the Fayum Oligocene of Egypt, specimens of all four species of Upper Fossil Wood Zone primates show evidence of tooth puncture marks. Of the four potential groups of primate predators--the snakes, the raptors, the crocodiles, and the primitive carnivores or creodonts--only the crocodiles and the creodonts could have made these puncture marks. When one compares the feeding habits of living crocodiles and mammalian carnivores with the evidence from th

Eating, drinking and temperature responses to intracerebroventricular cholecystokinin in the chick.

The central effect of cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK), SQ 19,844 or sincalide, on the intake of food and water and on colonic temperature (Tc) was investigated using the broiler cockerel. Four-week old chicks were maintained in a thermoneutral environment of 23-24 degrees C. After food was removed for a 24 hr interval, CCK was infused in a volume of 10.0 microliters into the lateral cerebral ventricle (ICV) in doses ranging from 10-150 ng. Although lower doses of CCK had no effect on food intake, 100 or 150 ng of CCK significantly reduced consumption of food in a dose-dependent manner; water

[Predation of Lymnaea (Galba) truncatula Müller by Zonitoides nitidus Müller (Mollusca Gastropoda Pulmonata) (author's transl)].

Zonitoides nitidus is omnivorous with carnivorous tendancies: the presence of food coming from snails is required for growth of this predator. This snail is not selective for the choice of its preys. Zonitoides cannot be taken for an absolute predator for all growing periods of Lymnaea truncatula: eggs and large snails are not eaten. This species can be cannibal.
