The authors present the case of an otherwise healthy 38-year-old female with an atypical extradural arachnoid cyst with multi-level involvement in the lumbar spine leading to left quadriceps weakness and dysesthesia. Upon presentation, a lumbar spine MRI with contrast and plain radiographs revealed extensive L4 bony erosion. An MR angiogram and cervical spine MRI with contrast were then obtained in order to rule out any aortic root or cervical spine pathology. With no other apparent clinically relevant pathology revealed by these additional tests, an L3-5 posterior decompression and fusion pro

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by weakening of voluntary muscles during the day and a marked restitution of function during the night and after rest. The symptoms may worsen over days or weeks, sometimes even in a few hours, and are usually well controlled by appropriate therapy. Arachnoid cysts are congenital or acquired deformities of the arachnoid membrane and are usually too small to cause distinct clinical symptomatology. We describe a case of a 76-year-old myasthenia gravis patient with an arachnoid cyst. To the best of our knowledge this is the first rep

Intradural arachnoid cysts are a rare cause of spinal cord and nerve root compression. Primarily, they are present in the thoracic region posteriorly. We report a 25-year-old man who had an intradural arachnoid cyst at the level of conus medullaris presenting with cauda equina syndrome, which is very rare.

Risk factors for cerebral aneurysms typically include age, hypertension, smoking, and alcohol usage. However, the possible connection of aneurysms with genetic conditions such as Marfan's syndrome, polycystic kidney disease, and neurofibromatosis raises the question of possible genetic risk factors for aneurysm, and additionally, genetic risk factors for rupture. We conducted a literature review using the PubMed database for studies regarding genetic correlation with cerebral aneurysm formation as well as rupture from December 2008 to Jun 2015. Twenty-one studies related to IA formation and 10

We report the case of a 7-year-old boy with an incidentally diagnosed left sylvian arachnoid cyst. At a clinical follow-up of 2 years, cranial computed tomography scans found the cyst to be totally resolved. The mechanism of this rare spontaneous resolution of an arachnoid cyst is discussed.

Arachnoid cysts are congenital, benign, non-neoplastic, extra-axial intra-arachnoidal lesions. Arachnoid cysts rarely become symptomatic, with bleeding. Intracranial haemorrhage as a complication of arachnoid cyst is a very rare condition. It is well-known that mid-cranial fossa cysts might cause intracerebral haemorrhage or subdural haematoma secondary to traumas. However, the occurrence of spontaneous subdural haematoma secondary to arachnoid cysts, developing without any trauma, is even rarer. A 17-year-old boy presenting with diplopia and headache, with no history of trauma, was diagnosed

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Split cord malformation (SCM) is a congenital disease that can be associated with other spinal anomalies. Few cases of concurrent intradural arachnoid cyst and SCM have been sporadically reported; however, sacral extradural arachnoid cyst (SEAC) with SCM is very rare.
PURPOSE: The report describes our experience with simultaneous surgery in patients with concurrent SEAC and SCM in an effort to document the treatment of the rare spinal concomitant anomalies.
STUDY DESIGN: The present study is designed as a case series.
PATIENT SAMPLE: This is a continuous series of patien

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts of spine are a very rare occurrence. The aetiology still remains unclear, but the most accepted explanation is the existence of areas of weakness in the spinal dura. Symptoms depend on the location in the spine. Magnetic resonance imaging is used for its diagnosis. Management depends of clinical presentation, and the surgery is reserved for patients with neurological impairment.
CLINICAL CASE: A case is described of 67 year-old male with myelopathy and radiculopathy symptoms, both diagnosed simultaneously. The magnetic resonance imaging was used to diagnose a thora

Primary intracranial cystic or cyst-like lesions include intra-arachnoid, epidermoid, dermoid, and choroid plexus cysts. Differentiation of these cystic lesions can usually be accomplished by imaging studies alone; however, some cysts are similar in appearance and require histopathology for definitive diagnosis. Clinical signs often reflect the location of the cysts within the intracranial cavity rather than the type of cyst. If clinical signs are significant and progressive, surgical removal is warranted and may be successful, although cystic contents could be harmful if allowed to contact su

In this article, we provide a literature review of cranial nerve (CN) VI injury after dural-arachnoid puncture. CN VI injury is rare and ranges in severity from diplopia to complete lateral rectus palsy with deviated gaze. The proposed mechanism of injury is cerebrospinal fluid leakage causing intracranial hypotension and downward displacement of the brainstem. This results in traction on CN VI leading to stretch and neural demyelination. Symptoms may present 1 day to 3 weeks after dural-arachnoid puncture and typically are associated with a postdural puncture (spinal) headache. Resolution of

Several types of intraspinal cyst develop within the spinal canal from the craniovertebral junction to the sacrum. These lesions occur in both children and adults. Arachnoid cysts are one of them and are more frequent in the paediatric population, being a relatively uncommon lesion in adults. The arachnoid cyst may be located intradurally or extradurally. The intradural type may be congenital or from spinal trauma, infection or spondylosis. Although intradural arachnoid cysts are often asymptomatic, they may give early symptoms when they exist with synchronous pathologies constricting the spin

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts most frequently occur in the middle cranial fossa and when they are symptomatic, patients present with central nervous symptoms. Nevertheless, a large proportion of arachnoid cysts are incidentally diagnosed during neuroimaging in cases with nonspecific symptoms.
REPORT OF CASES: The cases of two males with middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts with nonspecific inner ear symptoms were retrospectively reviewed. The first patient presented with mild headache, nausea, vertigo, unsteadiness, and tinnitus on the left ear while the second patient's main complaint was left

BACKGROUND: Temporal arachnoid cysts have been shown to interfere with the function of nervous structures, both cerebral cortex and cranial nerves.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this case report we describe a boy with a left temporal arachnoid cyst with a sudden onset of visual impairment 4 days after a mild trauma to the head. A perimetry test revealed a complete nasal hemianopia of the left eye, which normalized rapidly after an emergency craniotomy with cyst fenestration 3 hours after the patient experienced the reduced vision.
CONCLUSIONS: The observed, reversible effect on vision is most prob

Intracranial arachnoid diverticula (cysts) are rare accumulations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the arachnoid membrane. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of fourth ventricle arachnoid diverticula in a group of dogs. The hospital's medical records were searched for dogs with MRI studies of the brain and a diagnosis of fourth ventricle arachnoid diverticulum. Clinical characteristics were recorded from medical records and MRI studies were reinterpreted by a board-certified veterinary radiologist. Five pediatric dogs ful

BACKGROUND: Disturbances of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow are the commonest cause of syringomyelia. Spinal arachnopathies may lead to CSF flow obstructions but are difficult to diagnose. Consequently, associated syringomyelias are often categorized as idiopathic.
OBJECTIVE: To present and analyze the diagnosis of and long-term outcomes in an observational study of patients with nontraumatic arachnopathies from 1991 to 2011.
METHODS: A total of288 patients (mean age, 47 ± 15 years; follow-up, 54 ± 46 months) were evaluated. Decompression with arachnolysis, untethering, and duraplasty for res

Hydatid cysts of the posterior fossa are extremely rare. Intracranial hydatid cysts are more common in children and occur more frequently in the supratentorial space. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department because of intense headache, nausea, vomiting, and progressive drowsiness that developed within the period of a week. On radiological examination a round, 2.5 × 2.5-cm cystic lesion appeared in the ambient cistern and caused hydrocephalus as a result of extrinsic aqueductal stenosis. The cyst was successfully removed using the puncture, aspiration, irrigation, and resectio
