Takayasu's arteritis is a chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory disease of the arteries, which primarily involves the aorta, its main branches such as the brachiocephalic, carotid, subclavian, vertebral, and renal arteries, as well as the coronary and pulmonary arteries. It has been suggested that pregnancy, although not usually associated with an exacerbation of inflammatory vascular lesions, should only be considered during a phase of remission. The increased intravascular volume seen during pregnancy may impair circulation and exacerbate aortic regurgitation, hypertension, and congestive heart …

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is an uncommon disease of young women, characterized by granulomatous vasculitis of medium and large arteries. In addition to constitutional symptoms, it causes various clinical morbidities, such as arm claudication, decreased arterial pulses, carotidynia and hypertension. The incidence rate of TA has wide variation in different geographical areas. It was calculated to be 0.12 cases/100,000/ year in Sweden, 0.22 in Kuwait, 0.26 in USA, and probably higher in Japan. Neurological involvement is reported in only a minority of patients and occurrence of neurological syndrom…

OBJECTIVES: Takayasu arteritis is well known as a cause of stroke in Asia but has rarely been described in the Western world. Here we report the clinical and neuroimaging follow-up of a series of patients with Takayasu arteritis from Europe.
METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Takayasu arteritis of the American College of Rheumatology were evaluated on follow-up by standardized neurological examination, sonography and MRI.
RESULTS: At follow-up almost 20 yr after onset of symptoms, the subclavian artery and the common carotid artery were often af…

OBJECTIVE: Takayasu arteritis is a large-vessel vasculitis that occurs predominantly in young females. The diagnosis is not usually established before arterial stenoses or occlusions are present. The aim of the study was to find out if sonography can aid in the diagnosis of the disease in earlier stages.
METHODS: We describe three patients with early disease who had no haemodynamically relevant stenoses. They are compared with nine patients who were diagnosed in the stenotic/occlusive stage of the disease. All patients were German Caucasian females. Colour Doppler sonography and angiography w…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and ocular manifestations of Takayasu arteritis and the fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) characteristics of Takayasu retinopathy (TR).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical records and fundus fluorescein angiograms of 156 eyes of 78 patients with Takayasu arteritis were reviewed. Fundus FA using a wide-field fundus camera (60 degrees) was performed in 19 patients, and conventional angiography or spiral computed tomographic angiography was performed in all 78 patients.
RESULTS: The series included 67 female and 11 male patients; mean age at time of diagnosis was …

Anastomotic aneurysm may occur after surgical treatment of Takayasu's arteritis. We describe a surgical technique designed to prevent this problem. The technique includes a bypass from a donor artery to a nondiseased distal artery, reinforcement of the suture line to prevent stretching or expansion at the anastomoses, and minimization of inflow perfusion to the brain. The technique was used in two patients, whose grafts were patent 1 and 2 years, respectively, after surgery. Careful differential diagnosis is essential to the success of this method, which may also be used to treat aortic aneury…

Two patients with temporal arteritis are reported in whom terrible headache was the predominant symptom of the disease. Both of them improved after prednisone 60 mg daily in the initial dose. The diagnosis and the treatment of giant cell arteritis are discussed.

Takayasu arteritis is an uncommon vasculitis, often referred to as aortic arch syndrome. It is most prevalent in young women. Physical findings such as the combination of pulseless arms and carotid bruits suggest the diagnosis. Associated skin manifestations such as pyoderma gangrenosum and erythema nodosum have been described. We present a 27-year-old woman with diffuse purpuric eruption and Takayasu arteritis. This appears to be the first description of such an association.

Autopsy findings of 10 patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) are presented. These patients include six females and four males with a mean age of 22.6+/-10.2 years. Hypertension was the commonest mode of presentation. On autopsy, the vascular lesions in the aorta comprised of stenosis (eight), dilatation (six), aneurysm (two) and dissection of aorta involving its arch, thoracic and abdominal aorta (one). Abdominal aorta was the commonest site of involvement (nine patients) and renal artery was involved in six patients. Histologically, the three types of lesions were identified--active, fibrotic…

Two cases affected with Takayashu arteritis are presented. The adult probanda born in 1960 after genetic counselling and appropriate prenatal care had a healthy liveborn boy. Her previous six pregnancies were terminated on the basis of forced medical reason. The infant probanda died at the age of 4 months with the features of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Pathohistological examination detected her Takayashu arteritis. It seems to be the youngest published case in the international literature and Takayashu arteritis may be the rare cause of SIDS.

Temporal cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis occurring mainly in the elderly. Classic symptoms such as headache, jaw claudication, visual changes, and polymyalgia rheumatica make the diagnosis relatively easy. Occult or asymptomatic presentations, however, are often missed or attributed to another cause. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the diverse presentations of this disease to avoid unnecessary investigations and prevent complications such as visual loss, myocardial ischemia, cerebrovascular accident, and death. This report presents the case of a patient who was referred w…

We describe a 66-year-old man with giant cell arteritis (GCA) limited to the prostate. His symptoms, which resembled prostatic neoplasia, resolved with systemic steroid therapy. Pathology studies revealed no clinical or histologic data indicating temporal artery involvement. To our knowledge this is the first described case of GCA involving the prostate.

Isolated arteritis of the central nervous system (CNS) is a relatively rare condition. Of the patients treated at our department two presented with characteristic features and eventually the diagnosis of isolated arteritis of the CNS was established. Headaches and relapsing lesions of cerebral nerves were predominant in the clinical picture of the first patient. In agreement with the clinical picture suggesting that small arteries were affected, the angiographic (AG) finding was negative and the diagnosis was based mainly on the positive effect of immunosuppressive treatment. The second patien…

A case of a 74-year-old woman, with a histological diagnosis of Transient Arteritis two years before and Nodose Polyarteritis, is described. Although the coexistance of these two vasculitis in a same patient has been rarely described in the literature, we considered that the diagnostic suscpiction of Nodose Polyarteritis should be maintained in a patient with Transient Arteritis developing multisystemic signs.
