The efficacy of using the IBM Speech Viewer Vowel Accuracy Module to treat young children with hearing impairment.

The efficacy of the IBM SpeechViewer's Vowel Accuracy Module for the treatment of vowel productions was evaluated in six preschool children with hearing-impairment over a 4-month period. A single-subject design was used, and the vowels /a/, /i/ and /u/ were treated. Untreated sounds also were probed to monitor for carryover and developmental effects. One of the children was dismissed from the study because of noncompliance. Of the remaining five children, four exhibited a treatment effect for /u/, two for /a/, and one for /i/. Four of the children demonstrated some generalization. Developmenta

Phonological processing skills and deficits in adult dyslexics.

This article presents 4 experiments aimed at defining the primary underlying phonological processing deficit(s) in adult dyslexia. 5 phonological processes, all involving spoken language, were studied: phoneme perception, phoneme awareness, lexical retrieval of phonology, articulatory speed, and phonetic coding in verbal short-term memory. 2 differently ascertained adult dyslexic groups, familial dyslexics (n = 15) and clinic dyslexics (n = 15), were the subjects in each experiment. These dyslexic groups were chosen because deficits that persist until adulthood and that are found in differentl

Evaluating rate and accuracy of real word vs. non-word diadochokinetic productions from childhood to early adulthood in Hebrew speakers.

BACKGROUND: Oral-Diadochokinesis (oral-DDK) tasks measure how quickly and accurately one can repeat a series of target sounds. Thus, they are a popular tool for evaluating oral-motor skills for individuals with various speech disorders. Typically, oral-DDK tasks involve rapid repetition of non-words. For several populations (e.g., young children, older adults), it has been suggested that repetitions of real words may be more suitable, commonly resulting in faster rates. Yet, the literature is either silent or inconsistent regarding this real-word repetition advantage for other age groups, from

Khon Kaen: a community-based speech therapy model for an area lacking in speech services for clefts.

Absence of speech rehabilitation services is one of the critical difficulties in care for clefts in Thailand and some other developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the "Khon Kaen Community-Based Speech Therapy Model" in decreasing the number of articulation defects in children with cleft palate and/or lip. Sixteen children with cleft palate and/or lip in 6 districts of Maha Sarakham Province were enrolled for study. A three-day intensive speech camp was held in Srinagarind Hospital and followed by an outreach program of six one-day follow-up spee

Toward an executive origin for acquired phonological dyslexia: a case of specific deficit of context-sensitive grapheme-to- phoneme conversion rules.

Phonological dyslexia is a written language disorder characterized by poor reading of nonwords when compared with relatively preserved ability in reading real words. In this study, we report the case of FG, a 74-year-old man with phonological dyslexia. The nature and origin of his reading impairment were assessed using tasks involving activation and explicit manipulation of phonological representations as well as reading of words and nonwords in which the nature and complexity of grapheme-to-phoneme conversion rules (GPC rules) were manipulated. FG also underwent an extensive neuropsychologica

Triangulating speech sound generalization.

Generalization refers to the extension of learned behaviours to novel conditions, and it is one of the criteria by which the effectiveness and efficiency of a remediation programme may be judged. This article extracts principles of generalization from the treatment literature, and provides examples of how this information may be used to help guide treatment decisions. Included is a discussion of client, clinician, and treatment variables that may contribute to the generalization process.

A comparison of word lexicality in the treatment of speech sound disorders.

The goal of this research programme was to evaluate the role of word lexicality in effecting phonological change in children's sound systems. Four children with functional speech sound disorders (SSDs) were enrolled in an across-subjects multiple baseline single-subject design; two were treated using high-frequency real words (RWs) and two were treated using (low-frequency) non-words (NWs). Dependent variables were learning during treatment, generalization of treated and untreated sounds post-treatment and error consistency indices. The oldest child in the NW group demonstrated slightly greate

The importance of sound identification training in phonological intervention.

Little is known about the relevance of sound identification training in phonological intervention. Some treatment approaches incorporate sound identification training; others do not. The purpose of the present study was to compare articulatory improvement following treatment with and without sound identification training. Nine preschool children with severe phonological disorders were randomly assigned to 2 groups for the treatment of stimulable sound errors: (a) mixed training with concurrent production and sound identification training and (b) production-only training. Articulatory improveme

Dyslexia: verbal impairments in the absence of magnocellular impairments.

Sensitivity to dynamic visual and auditory stimuli was assessed in dyslexic children (Grade 7) who at school entrance had suffered from the well-established double-deficit of impaired phonological sensitivity and deficient rapid naming performance. A visual magnocellular deficit was assessed by the coherent motion detection task of the Oxford group. An auditory magnocellular deficit was assessed by the illusory sound movement perception task of Hari and Kiesilä. On both tasks our dyslexic subjects' performance was similar or even better than the performance of normally reading controls. Differ

Production, conceptualization and change in distinctive featural categories.

This study extends prior investigations of children's abilities to conceptualize distinctive phonological features in development. The purpose was to establish the relationship between a child's productive and conceptual knowledge, and to examine its potential influence on phonological change. Six children evidencing phonological disorders (aged 3;4 to 5;7) participated in evaluations of the productive sound system and the metalinguistic ability to classify phonological information, with particular emphasis on fricatives. Then, children were enrolled in clinical treatment aimed at accurate pro

Role of visual feedback treatment for defective /s/ sounds in patients with cleft palate.

The role of visual feedback in the treatment of defective /s/ sounds in patients with cleft palate is described. Six patients with cleft palate who were similar in age, velopharyngeal function, and type of misarticulation were selected for this study. Treatment was provided using either visual feedback or no visual feedback. Visual feedback for tongue placement was provided by the Rion Electropalatograph (EPG). Visual feedback for frication was provided by a multi-function speech training aid (MFSTA). Improvement in /s/ sound production was assessed objectively using a method described previou

Speech modification by a deaf child through dynamic orometric modeling and feedback.

Baseline physiologic, acoustic, and phonetic data are presented to characterize speech production of a 3 1/2-year-old deaf girl prior to a visual articulatory modeling and feedback program. These observations suggest that she used an articulatory strategy based on visual information about lip and jaw movements rather than tongue positions as a primary means of differentiating speech sounds. The training program which followed used instrumentally generated displays of tongue position and movements to teach production of the (i) and (a) vowels in single and bisyllable word contexts. Disorders of the distal radioulnar joint.

Disorders of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) are relatively common and often associated with the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Anatomically and biomechanically, the DRUJ should be considered in the broader context of the forearm joint, which has both distal and proximal articulations. Clinical examination is the best method of evaluating trauma to the DRUJ or DRUJ instability, although the clinical appearance of disorders may be subtle and imaging studies may be difficult to interpret. Arthroscopy is the best tool for evaluating the integrity of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. A

Emerging themes in the revision of the classification of somatoform disorders.

The somatoform disorders, as currently defined in DSM-IV and ICD-10, have been criticized for their complexity and poor clinical utility. In this paper we consider these criticisms as well as the conceptual question of whether there is sufficient evidence for classifying them as mental and behavioural disorders. The review suggests that, as currently defined, somatoform disorders do not fulfil a recently articulated set of criteria for mental and behavioural disorders. In particular, the disorders are not defined according to positive psychological and behavioural disorders and evidence is spa

Infection and speech: Disfluency and other speech symptoms in Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: In the early 20th century a link between infection and speech disfluency was discussed. Recent reports indicate that PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome), and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) may be associated with a high incidence of speech disfluency. The present study specifically investigates disfluency and other speech symptoms following onset of PANS and PANDAS. Prevalence of previously reported speech related symptoms vocal tics, selective mutism and "baby talk" is included. The present stud

[The rehabilitation of the tongue in hypoglossal-facial anastomosis].

UNLABELLED: End to end hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (tt HFA) is a traditional technique for rehabilitation of facial palsy. The sacrifice of the hypoglossal nerve generates a paralysis and an atrophy of the tongue which is thought to lead to speech, chewing and swallowing disorders. In a previous study, we demonstrated that tt HFA does not lead to speech disorders (Gatignol et al 2003). OBJECTIVES: In this work, we were interested in the functional consequences of the lingual atrophy and in the possibilities of rehabilitation with early therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine patients we
