A Critical Analysis of the Factors Contributing to Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female Athletes.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are a prevalent concern in athletic population, particularly among female athletes who are disproportionately affected. The increased incidence of ACL injuries in females is attributed to a combination of anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical factors that influence knee stability. This review comprehensively explores these contributing factors, highlighting gender-specific anatomical differences such as wider pelvis, increased quadriceps (Q) angle, and steeper tibial slopes, all of which predispose females to greater knee valgus during dynamic a

The role of psychological resilience and aggression in injury prevention among martial arts athletes.

INTRODUCTION: For martial artists, the ability to manage reactions in the face of adversity and bounce back after a stressful event can have major impact on performance. The scope of the research is to investigate martial artists' level of resilience and aggression (Go-ahead, Foul play, and Assertiveness factors), what is specific to athletes and who have suffered from moderate and/or severe injuries (in terms of resilience and three factors of aggression examined), and test the possibility that a psychological variable under investigation can predict athletes' injury severity. MATERIALS AND

Menstrual Cycle Hormone Relaxin and ACL Injuries in Female Athletes: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes are at increased risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The influence of hormonal variation on female ACL injury risk remains ill-defined. Recent data suggests that the collagen-degrading menstrual hormone relaxin may cyclically impact female ACL tissue quality. This review aims to identify any correlation between menstrual relaxin peaks and rates of female ACL injury. METHODS: A systematic review was performed, utilizing the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases. Included studies had to directly address relaxin/female ACL interactions. The primary out

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female athletes: risk factors and strategies for prevention.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common and debilitating knee injuries in professional athletes with an incidence in females up to eight-times higher than their male counterparts. ACL injuries can be career-threatening and are associated with increased risk of developing knee osteoarthritis in future life. The increased risk of ACL injury in females has been attributed to various anatomical, developmental, neuromuscular, and hormonal factors. Anatomical and hormonal factors have been identified and investigated as significant contributors including osseous anatomy,

Relationship between Tilt Sensation Ability and Lower Limb Injuries in Junior Athletes.

The purpose of this study was to devise a tilt sensation measurement method to evaluate ankle proprioception and to examine its reliability. It was also used to determine the relationship among tilt sensation abilities, physical development, and lower limb injuries in junior athletes. In this study, a step platform created tilt angles. Participants with eye masks answered "yes" or "no" to sensing a tilt, evaluated over nine or seven trials. Experiment 1 involved 22 university students (20.6 ± 0.9 years). The minimum angle at which a tilt could be sensed while standing on both feet was determin

Locked Posterior Shoulder Dislocation with Accompanying Fracture: A Debilitating Rare Injury for Athletes?

Shoulder dislocation is undoubtedly one of the most common injuries in traumatology. Posterior dislocation of the shoulder is regarded as comparatively rare compared to anterior dislocation, whilst it is strikingly extraordinary for this type of injury to be accompanied by a concomitant fracture. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment can be considerably demanding, while being vitally important in this exceedingly rare condition. These injuries are broadly considered to be under-reported in the existing literature, especially among high-demand athletes. We present a rare case of a high-d

Reactive postural responses predict risk for acute musculoskeletal injury in collegiate athletes.

UNLABELLED: Identifying risk factors for musculoskeletal injury is critical to maintain the health and safety of athletes. While current tests consider isolated assessments of function or subjective ratings, objective tests of reactive postural responses, especially when in cognitively demanding scenarios, may better identify risk of musculoskeletal injury than traditional tests alone. OBJECTIVES: Examine if objective assessments of reactive postural responses, quantified using wearable inertial measurement units, are associated with the risk for acute lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries

Management of lumbar bone stress injury in cricket fast bowlers and other athletes.

BACKGROUND: Recent guidelines (including a special series in The Lancet) have emphasised a minimal role for imaging when assessing low back pain in adults, as the majority of patients will have non-specific findings on imaging that do not correlate well with pain. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the diagnosis of lumbar bone stress injuries in young athletes should be considered an exception to the recommendation to avoid imaging for low back pain in adults. METHOD: Narrative review. RESULTS: Early lumbar bone stress injury diagnosis has been available via traditional MRI sequences (and its pre

[Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle in amateur athletes: a rare injury or often overlooked?].

INTRODUCTION: A rupture of the pectoralis major muscle is a rare injury pattern overall, but it is frequently described in athletes, particularly in weightlifting. The risk of sustaining this type of injury is present especially during the eccentric phase of muscle loading. An association between such injuries and the abuse of anabolic steroids is described in the literature, but there is no coherent evidence to support this. We report the case of a young patient with a normal habitus who suffered a humeral rupture of the pectoralis major muscle during recreational sports. There was no history

Forearm Flexor Tendon Injury in Adolescent Athletes: Risk Factors, Treatment, and Prevention.

Injury to the flexor pronator mass is a common condition that is especially prevalent in overhead throwing athletes. The increasing incidence of these injuries has promoted considerable efforts in research to better understand the pathology, risk factors, and potential mechanisms to prevent injury in these athletes. While there are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with injury, a common theme involves chronic overuse and microtrauma with inadequate resting intervals between performances. The purpose of this review is to discuss medial elbow injuries in young athletes with a p

Injuries, Pain, and Catastrophizing Level in Gymnasts: A Retrospective Analysis of a Cohort of Spanish Athletes.

Physical and psychological demands from gymnastics increase the occurrence of injuries and pain among athletes, whose consequent level of catastrophizing could affect rehabilitation and performance. Although the characteristics of each gymnastics discipline may be key factors, they remain unclear. This study aimed to describe injuries, pain, and catastrophizing levels of gymnasts, according to their discipline and training characteristics. A total of 160 gymnasts fulfilled an online survey at the end of the 2021 season. Eighty gymnasts sustained 106 injuries (mainly ankle), and 128 had current
