Vertical distribution and structure of the reef fish assemblage in the oceanic island of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil.

The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago harbors one of the richest reef ichthyofaunas among the oceanic islands of the South Atlantic; however, most ecological studies on the local fish assemblages have been conducted in shallow reefs. This study assessed the structure of fish communities along the reef depth gradient, from shallow (≤30 m) to mesophotic depths (30-111 m), through underwater visual surveys. In total, 61 species belonging to 27 families were recorded, with significant variations in the reef fish assemblage among depth strata. The upper mesophotic zone (30-60 m) stood out with the hi

Impacts of PCBs on grey seal pup immunity and influenza A infection vary across biological scales.

Disease outbreaks in marine species have increased, prompting concern regarding the health of coastal ecosystems. Environmental contaminants are hypothesized to contribute to disease outbreaks, as many contaminants have documented immunosuppressive effects in a variety of marine organisms. Of particular concern are marine mammals that have long life-spans, live in coastal waters, and have thick blubber, all of which leads to greater contaminant exposure and accumulation. In the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been detected in grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), yet…

Concern for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Spillover into Cetaceans.

Influenza A virus (IAV) has a wide range of avian and mammalian hosts, leading to disease outbreaks and increasing the risk of panzootics and pandemics. Subtype H5N1 of clade 2.3.4.4b is causing the current high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) panzootic. Environmental changes are fuelling the spread of HPAI H5N1 in wildlife worldwide, with occasional spillover events from seabirds to cetaceans. Sampling difficulties and limited tests available for diagnosis are a challenge to cetacean virology research. Understanding the risk of HPAI outbreaks in cetaceans requires a comprehensive examina

Freshwater trematodes in Iceland and the surrounding north - current advances and questions.

Iceland is an isolated, sub-Arctic, oceanic island of volcanic origin in the northern North Atlantic. With a limited faunal diversity and being the most northern point in the distributional range for some species, it is an intriguing model region to study parasite biodiversity and biogeography. Since 2006, there has been a history of intense biodiversity discoveries of freshwater trematodes (Trematoda, Digenea), thanks to the use of integrative taxonomic methods. The majority of digeneans (28 out of 41 known) were characterised with molecular genetic methods and morphological analyses, with so

Postmortem findings in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) caught in a drift gillnet.

BACKGROUND: Penguin interaction with gillnets has been extensively reported in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and is considered a major conservation threat. Among penguin species, Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) are currently considered of great concern, particularly in Brazil, where they are highly susceptible to gillnet bycatch. Nevertheless, information about drowning-associated microscopic findings in penguins is limited. RESULTS: We describe the anatomopathological findings of 20 Magellanic penguins that drowned after getting entangled in a drift gillnet while wintering a

Minuca panema (Coelho, 1972): Resurrection of a Fiddler Crab Species from Brazil Closely Related to Minuca burgersi (Holthuis, 1967) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Ocypodidae).

We redescribe a species of fiddler crab, Minuca panema (Coelho, 1972), from the Atlantic coast of South America. It is closely related to M. mordax (Smith, 1870), and until now, the taxon has been considered to be synonymous with another closely related species Minuca burgersi (Holthuis, 1967). However, we found that two clades of M. burgersi sensu lato were restricted to the Caribbean Basin. This distribution differs from than that of M. panema, which occurs primarily along the eastern coast of South America, ranging from the island of Trinidad to Praia da Armação, Santa Catarina, Brazil. [Sulfate-Reducing Bacterial Communities in the Water Column of the Gdansk Deep (Baltic Sea)].

Biodiversity of sulfate-reducing bacterial communities in the water column of the Gdansk Deep, Baltic Sea, where H2S had been detected in near-bottom layers, was analyzed by PCR with primers for the 16S rRNA genes of six major phylogenetic subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis followed by sequencing, the nucleotide sequences of reamplified dsrB gene fragments from investigated water samples were determined. For the first time the presence of nucleotide sequences of the dsrB gene was detected by PCR in the water samples from all hydrochemica

Interactive effects of ocean acidification and benzophenone-3 on mussel physiology: A biomarker-based approach.

Benzophenone-3 (BP3), a widely used ultraviolet (UV) filter in personal care products and industrial applications, is an emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems due to its lipophilicity, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity to marine biota. Its occurrence in marine environments coincides with ocean acidification driven by rising atmospheric CO2 emissions, which disrupts the bicarbonate buffer system and reduces pH. This study investigated the acute effects (96 h exposure) of BP3 (at realistic concentrations of 0.2 and 2 μg/L) under 3 pH conditions (8.1- the current South Atlantic condition-

Predicting Karenia brevis Induced Respiratory Irritation at Individual Southwest Florida Beaches Using Cell Abundances Plus Wind Direction and Speed.

Nearly annually, blooms of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis form along the southwest Florida coast leading to a variety of negative impacts, including respiratory irritation (RI) in humans. To limit these impacts, NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) developed a RI model to provide beach-goers with a category-based estimate of RI risk at individual beaches along Florida's Gulf and Atlantic coasts. The RI model is based on: (a) K. brevis cell counts collected at individual beaches; (b) high resolution wind direction and speed forecasts and observations; and (c) point-based

Genome-wide SNP data suggest complex ancestry of sympatric North Pacific killer whale ecotypes.

Three ecotypes of killer whale occur in partial sympatry in the North Pacific. Individuals assortatively mate within the same ecotype, resulting in correlated ecological and genetic differentiation. A key question is whether this pattern of evolutionary divergence is an example of incipient sympatric speciation from a single panmictic ancestral population, or whether sympatry could have resulted from multiple colonisations of the North Pacific and secondary contact between ecotypes. Here, we infer multilocus coalescent trees from >1000 nuclear single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and find ev

Experimental comparison of pathogenic potential of two sibling species Anisakis simplex s.s. and Anisakis pegreffii in Wistar rat.

OBJECTIVES: There are little data available on the pathology caused by the sibling species Anisakis simplex s.s. and Anisakis pegreffii. The differences shown in their ability to penetrate the muscle of fish may also be manifested in humans. The purpose of this study is to confirm possible differences in pathogenicity between A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii using an experimental model which simulates infection in humans. METHODS: Female Wistar rats were infected with 190 Anisakis type I L3 larvae from the Iberian coastline. After the animal was sacrificed, these L3 larvae were then recovered

Multi-Scale Temporal Patterns of Small Cetacean Behaviour in the Bay of Biscay.

Marine mammals are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic pressures, yet knowledge of their behavioural ecology remains limited, hindering effective conservation planning. Two years of continuous passive acoustic data were collected with porpoise detectors (C-POD and F-POD) in the northern Bay of Biscay (northeastern Atlantic Ocean), as part of the baseline assessment for an offshore wind farm development in the South Brittany area. Distinct temporal patterns in small cetacean presence and behaviour were observed. Dolphins exhibited dominant year-round presence with pronounced peaks in August-S…

Species Extirpation and Colonization Reveal Mixed Homogenization and Differentiation Across Terrestrial Taxa After One of the World's Largest Tailings Dam Failures.

In 2015, the failure of the Fundão tailings dam released ~45 million m3 of liquefied tailings into Brazil's Doce River basin, contaminating ~670 km of waterways to the Atlantic Ocean. However, the biodiversity consequences of this event for terrestrial organisms remain poorly understood, particularly across multiple terrestrial taxonomic groups and through time. We assessed how direct and indirect exposure to mine tailings affected the abundance and diversity of plants, vertebrates (anurans and birds), and invertebrates (ants, bees, beetles, and butterflies) in a 4-year monitoring period from …

A new Plasmodium Marchiafava & Celli, 1885 (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) species in Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) [Cory]) (Aves: Procellariiformes) stranded in a coastal area in Brazil.

Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), a migratory seabird from the Procellariidae family, is widely distributed across the Atlantic Ocean. It breeds on islands of Azores, Madeira, Canary, and Berlengas, and winters in coastal areas of South America and Africa. This species' wide habitat range contributes to pathogen exchange across global regions. Plasmodium, a genus of apicomplexan parasites causing avian malaria, affects many wild bird species worldwide. Although rare in seabirds, Plasmodium infections can significantly impact these hosts. We identified and characterized a new Plasmodium…

Heavy metals and microplastics in the stomach contents of two fish species: Trachurus trachurus and Zeus faber along the North and Central Atlantic Coast of Morocco.

Marine environments are increasingly affected by microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals (HMs) pollution, raising concerns about ecological and human health risks. This study investigates the presence (MPs) and (HMs) in the stomach contents of two commercial fish species, Trachurus trachurus and Zeus faber. This study aimed to assess the presence, quantify, and characterize MPs and HMs, as well as to evaluate the potential risks associated with microplastics and heavy metals. Samples were collected along the North and Central Moroccan Atlantic coast. MPs were identified using FT-IR spectroscopy,

Differential effects of iron enrichment on corals competing with macroalgae and zoantharians.

Marine anthropogenic eutrophication from nutrient and metal inputs has been linked to shifts in reef communities, benefitting fast-growing organisms that can outcompete corals. In 2015, the collapse of a mining dam in Brazil containing iron (Fe) waste reached the Southwestern Atlantic (SWA) Ocean and adjacent environments, but its effects on competitive interactions of corals are still unknown. We assessed the impacts of seawater enrichment with dissolved Fe on benthic competition with three reef-building corals (Siderastrea sp., Millepora alcicornis, Mussismilia harttii) against a common macr
