Clinical trial of press needle therapy with low-dose atropine for mild myopia in children.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of mild myopia among kids needs very effective methods for preventing its progression. Recent research suggests that a combination of acupuncture and a small dose of atropine eye drops might be more effectively combined for myopia control. The trial will evaluate myopia control among kids aged 6-14 years old using buried needle acupuncture with low-dose atropine 0.01%. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if there is a synergistic effect from periocular acupuncture and low doses of atropine on mild myopia in children 6-14 years old. METHODS: A total of 80 children with m…

A Rare Case of Esotropia Induced by Short-Term Use of 0.01% Atropine for Myopia Control.

This report a case of intermittent esotropia in an 8-year-old boy with high axial myopia, which manifested within just three months of initiating 0.01% atropine treatment, despite minimal axial elongation. After discontinuation of atropine and introduction of multifocal soft contact lenses, normal binocular visual function was restored. This case emphasizes the importance of monitoring binocular parameters during low-dose atropine treatment for myopia control.

Early identification of the efficacy of 0.125% atropine treatment for children with Myopia: A prospective pilot study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether early axial length (AL) changes in the short term after 0.125% atropine treatment could predict long-term axial elongation in children with myopia. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study involving children aged 5-15 years with myopia who were treated with 0.125% atropine for myopia control. AL was measured 1-2 months after starting treatment and then every 3 months for follow-up visits. Regression analysis was used to develop a model of AL changes with time. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was then used to identify correlati…

Low concentration atropine and myopia: a narrative review of the evidence for United Kingdom based practitioners.

The prevalence of myopia is increasing across the world. Controlling myopia progression would be beneficial to reduce adverse outcomes such as retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy which are associated with increased axial length. Pharmacological control of myopia progression with atropine has been investigated since the 19th century and the benefits of slowing myopia progression are considered against the side-effects of near blur and photophobia. More recently, randomised trials have focused on determining the optimum concentration of atropine leading to low-concentration atropine being …

Will the long-term use of atropine eye drops in children increase the risk of dry eye?

In recent years, some studies indicates that atropine eye drops is one of the most effective interventions for myopia. Due to large demand, the use of low-concentration atropine eye drops to reduce myopia progression is popular in China. Considering that the underlying mechanism of atropine eye drops in controlling the progression of myopia is still unclear, it is reasonable to pay enough attention to whether the long-term use of atropine eye drops in children will increase the risk of dry eye.

Monitoring the degradation of atropine and scopolamine in soil after spiking with naturally contaminated organic millet.

The spread of Datura sp. in European countries influences crop management and implies continuous food safety issues because of tropane alkaloids, atropine and scopolamine, the most relevant natural toxic compounds of this weed. These alkaloids can contaminate cereals to such a level that hampers food/feed related use and diverts batches of contaminated raw materials towards ultimate disposal such as burning. As no unambiguous information has been available on the fate of tropane alkaloids in soils, our study focused on the quantification and follow-up of these toxic residues in a soil experime…

A rare complication of topical atropine for treatment of eccrine hidrocystoma: Pharmacological fixed dilated pupils.

Multiple eccrine hidrocystoma (EH) has been treated with topical atropine with variable results. However, in rare cases, anticholinergic side effects have been seen after the use of the topical form of this drug. We presented a 50-year-old woman who developed recent onset of visual disturbance and photophobia from 2 weeks prior. The diagnosis of topical atropine-induced bilateral mydriasis was made. We reported a recognized but often overlooked case of bilateral mydriasis caused by application of topical 1% atropine for treatment of multiple EH.

Changes in the gene expression of the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium due to the addition of atropine.

We constructed a LongSAGE (Long Serial Analysis of Gene Expression) library from a 3-d culture of Phanerochaete chrysosporium supplemented with atropine, which inhibits the production of lignin-degrading enzymes. The library (the atropine library) contains 13,108 LongSAGE tags and 6,783 unique tags. The gene expression profile represented by the tags was compared with those of two previously constructed libraries, one of which was constructed using 2-d cultures in which the fungus had not yet produced ligninolytic enzymes (the 2-d library) and the other was constructed using 3-d cultures in wh…

The effect of a combination of medetomidine-butorphanol and medetomidine, butorphanol, atropine on glomerular filtration rate in dogs.

The effects of intramuscularly administered medetomidine and butorphanol (MB), and medetomidine, butorphanol, atropine (MBA) on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were determined in six dogs as measured by 99m-Tc-labeled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) nuclear scintigraphy. Direct systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures and heart rate were measured at regular time intervals before, during, and after GFR calculations. The mean GFR measurement following MB was significantly greater (4.44 ml/min/kg) than following MBA (3.82 ml/min/kg) or saline treatment (3.41 ml/min/…

Effects of atropine and L-NAME on cutaneous blood flow during body heating in humans.

We sought to investigate further the roles of sweating, ACh spillover, and nitric oxide (NO) in the neurally mediated cutaneous vasodilation during body heating in humans. Six subjects were heated with a water-perfused suit while cutaneous blood flow was measured with a laser-Doppler flowmeter. After a rise in core temperature (1. 0 +/- 0.1 degrees C) and the establishment of cutaneous vasodilation, atropine and subsequently the NO synthase inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) were given to the forearm via a brachial artery catheter. After atropine infusion, cutaneous vascular…
