Impulsivity is a behavior in everyday life of mentally healthy individuals. But in some cases the degree of impulsivity begins to create negative effects on one's life and acquires pathological connotation. Two clinical entities in which can be observed a high degree of impulsivity is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Addictive disorders. In these disorders, both impulsive act and impulsive choice are observed. According to some researchers, genetic factors are involved in the control of impulsivity. The impulsive choice, in the sense of delay discounting, may be an intermedi

Brian is an 11-year-old boy who presented to the emergency room with suicidal ideation and hearing voices. In the preceding weeks, he had escalating symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar disorder. His medical history was notable for complex partial epilepsy with onset at age 4 that had been well controlled with divalproate. He had several mental health diagnoses by various practitioners including oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. Brian's family and social history was notable for the absence of identifiab

The objective of the current study was to evaluate a proposed restrictive inattentive type of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by comparing clinical correlates among youths with ADHD inattentive type (ADHD-I) as a function of the number of hyperactivity symptoms presented (none vs. 3 or less) and controls (individuals without ADHD). The sample for this community-based study was comprised of youths aged 6 to 18 years from 12 public schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil. ADHD-I groups had lower levels of adaptive functioning (p < .001) and a higher occurrence of familial ADHD (p < .001)

OBJECTIVE: Clinical and population samples demonstrate that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs with other disorders. Comorbid disorder clustering within ADHD subtypes is not well studied.
METHOD: Latent class analysis (LCA) examined the co-occurrence of DSM-IV ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and depression symptoms in a population twin sample. The authors fit separate models for ADHD and comorbid disorder symptoms. Twin concordance ratios (monozygotic versus dizygotic) were compared examining genetic influence on class membership.

OBJECTIVE: To study rates and ages of onset of DSM-IV syndromal and subsyndromal comorbidity in a prepubertal and early adolescent bipolar disorder phenotype (PEA-BP) (N = 93) compared to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (N = 81).
METHOD: The WASH-U-KSADS was given by raters blinded to subject group separately to mothers about their children and to children about themselves. PEA-BP was defined as DSM-IV mania with at least one cardinal symptom of mania (elation or grandiosity) to avoid diagnosing using only symptoms that overlapped with those for ADHD. OBJECTIVE: To test the external validity of the dimensions and subtypes of DSM-IV attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by assessing the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity.
METHOD: Eight- to 18-year-old twins with ADHD (n = 105) and without ADHD (n = 95) were recruited through local school districts. Comorbid disorders were assessed by structured diagnostic interviews with the parent and child and by a behavioral rating scale completed by the child's classroom teacher.
RESULTS: Symptoms of inattention were associated with lower intelligence and higher levels of depression, where

We examined the gender appropriateness of the DSM-IV symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD). In Study 1, 100 mothers (35 of children with and 65 of children without ADHD) rated how gender-typical and problematic they saw DSM-IV symptoms of ADHD, ODD, and CD; feminine descriptions of ADHD, ODD, and CD behaviors that we created; and relationally and overtly aggressive behaviors. Mothers rated the DSM-IV symptoms and overt aggression as boy-descriptive, and the feminine items that we created and relational aggres

Evaluating treatment acceptability is crucial, as higher acceptability is associated with better adherence and lower dropout rates, a particular concern in treating youth with disruptive behavior disorders. This study built upon previous randomized controlled trials that demonstrated the efficacy of treatment for youth with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) by comparing the acceptability of Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), an innovative approach, with Parent Management Training (PMT), a well-established intervention. This exploratory study aimed to determine whether families in t

Youth with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD; Oppositional defiant disorder and/or conduct disorder) are known to show impaired social relationships. Little is known about positive (PFQ) and negative best friendship quality (NFQ) in youth with DBD, and their relations with DBD specific symptoms such as aggression subtypes, empathic abilities, and callous unemotional (CU)-traits. The current study includes N = 115 youth with and N = 146 without DBD (Mage = 13.98, SD = 2.2). A diagnostic interview and self-rating questionnaires assessed ODD/CD diagnosis, friendship quality, aggression, empathy,

Many children and adolescents presenting to the Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) are diagnosed with the Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Sometimes it may be difficult to reliably diagnose these disorders in the PES setting. Given these limitations, a large database of 6 years of PES visits showed 314 patients with DBD compared with 1625 without DBD. More DBD patient visits required the intervention of police and/or the mobile crisis team. These patients are more likely to have additional diagnoses of depression and attentio

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for managing adolescent ADHD.
METHOD: A total of 68 adolescents with ADHD and associated psychiatric comorbidities completed a manualized CBT treatment protocol. The intervention used in the study was a downward extension of the Safren et al. program for adults with ADHD who have symptoms unresolved by medication. Outcome variables consisted of narrow band (ADHD) and broadband (e.g., mood, anxiety, conduct) symptom measures (Behavior Assessment System for Children-2nd edition and ADHD-Rating Scales) as well as functioning

OBJECTIVE: Rates of pediatric bipolar disorders have increased and some are concerned about diagnostic accuracy. Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) was added to the DSM-5 in 2013. The purpose of this study was to assess diagnostic trends of bipolar disorders and DMDD and to identify predictors of receiving the DMDD diagnosis since implementation of DSM-5.
METHOD: Kentucky Medicaid claims from 2012-2017 for children under 18 years (N = 814,919; 2012 n = 473,389; 2013 n = 470,918; 2014 n = 499,094; 2015 n = 517,199; 2016 n = 529,048; 2017 n = 535,814) were used. Logistic regression w

OBJECTIVE: Emotional lability (EL) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) frequently co-occur with ADHD. This study evaluates whether EL merely represents the negative "mood/affect" component of ODD or forms a distinct dimension.
METHOD: EL and ODD data from 1,317 ADHD participants were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for binary data.
RESULTS: Within ADHD, 39.4% children had ODD and 42.6% had EL. A sizable proportion expressed only either ODD or EL: 16.6% had ODD-only, 19.7% had EL-only, and 22.9% expressed both. In both EFA and CFA, E
