Auditory neuropathy in children.

Auditory neuropathy is a sensorineural disorder characterized by absent or abnormal auditory brainstem evoked potentials and normal cochlear outer hair cell function. A variety of processes is thought to be involved in its pathophysiology and their influence on hearing may be different. We present here the diagnostic sequence and management of two new cases of auditory neuropathy in breastfeeding children.

Stroboscopy--a pertinent laryngological examination.

When observing the vocal fold movements in their laryngoscopic examination, most laryngologists seem to be trained to consider only the gross respiratory movements of the folds, i.e. abduction and adduction. these movements constitute an essential part of the vitally important valve function of the larynx, preventing aspiration and providing parts of the mechanisms for normal swallowing, coughing, and straining. The second important function of the larynx is to serve as a transducer of aerodynamic to acoustic energy; the voice function. Probably for reasons of tradition, the examination of the

Use of Terminology and the Effect of Training on Auditory-Perceptual Ratings of Speaking Voice by Singing Teachers.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate group differences between singing teachers and speech-language pathologists when rating dysphonic speaking voices and whether training using reference samples and the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) improves inter-rater reliability between and among the two groups. Differences in use of terminology and ratings could reveal potential for miscommunication in the team treatment of singers with voice disorders. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective pre test post test cohort study with between and within group compar

Masking-level differences in older adults: the effect of the level of the masking noise.

In Experiment 1, masking-level differences (MLDs) for a 500-Hz tone at five masker levels were obtained from younger and older adults. For both age groups, there were no reliable increases in MLD once the spectrum level of the masker exceeded 27 dB SPL. MLDs were larger for younger than for older adults over the range of masker levels tested. In Experiment 2, the levels of both the signal and the masker in one ear were attenuated by either 15 or 30 dB relative to their level in the other ear, which was fixed at a spectrum level of 47 dB SPL. MLDs for both age groups declined with increasing IA

Blast exposure and dual sensory impairment: an evidence review and integrated rehabilitation approach.

Combat exposures to blast can result in both peripheral damage to the ears and eyes and central damage to the auditory and visual processing areas in the brain. The functional effects of the latter include visual, auditory, and cognitive processing difficulties that manifest as deficits in attention, memory, and problem solving--symptoms similar to those seen in individuals with visual and auditory processing disorders. Coexisting damage to the auditory and visual system is referred to as dual sensory impairment (DSI). The number of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans w

Low time resolution in schizophrenia Lengthened windows of simultaneity for visual, auditory and bimodal stimuli.

The guarantee of perceptual coherence for events through everyday life situations depends upon the capacity to correctly integrate series of multi-sensory experiences. Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to reveal a deficit in integrating, i.e., "binding", perceptual information together. However, results in the literature have also suggested the reverse effect. Indeed, in certain paradigms patients have revealed more binding phenomenon than healthy controls and reported experiencing two distinct events as occurring "together". This finding suggests that patients may require longer tim

Central auditory processing ability in children with ADHD with and without learning disabilities.

A few studies have shown more central auditory processing deficits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than in nondisabled children. Because these studies failed to screen participants with ADHD for learning disabilities (LD), it is not clear whether these deficits are correlates of ADHD or LD or both. In the present study, the central auditory processing ability of children with ADHD, ADHD with LD, and no disabilities was examined. Results indicated lower central auditory processing ability, and significant correlations between reading and ADHD symptoms and readin

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit α7-knockout mice exhibit degraded auditory temporal processing.

The CHRNA7 gene that encodes the α7-subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR) has been associated with some autism spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopmental conditions characterized, in part, by auditory and language impairment. These conditions may include auditory processing disorders that represent impaired timing of neural activity, often accompanied by problems understanding speech. Here, we measure timing properties of sound-evoked activity via the auditory brainstem response (ABR) of α7-nAChR knockout mice of both sexes and wild-type colony controls. We find a sig

Effect of presentation rate on auditory processing in Rett syndrome: event-related potential study.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by mutations in the MECP2 gene. Patients with RS have severe motor abnormalities and are often unable to walk, use hands and speak. The preservation of perceptual and cognitive functions is hard to assess, while clinicians and care-givers point out that these patients need more time to process information than typically developing peers. Neurophysiological correlates of auditory processing have been also found to be distorted in RS, but sound presentation rates were relatively quick in these studies (stimulus on

[Reliability of brain stem audiometry in specific learning disorders (disorders of sensory integration)].

Diagnostic audiological tests performed in ten children from 1985 to 1991 showed remarkable differences between the results of behavioral audiometry (free field or pure tone audiometry) and those of auditory evoked response audiometry. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) was absent in seven children with sensory neural hearing loss. Neuropsychological evaluation was performed on four children, neuropsychological observation was performed on two children, pediatric examination was performed on three children and one child showed signs of neuropediatric disorder. The results of neuropsychological

Auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia and nonschizophrenia populations: a review and integrated model of cognitive mechanisms.

While the majority of cognitive studies on auditory hallucinations (AHs) have been conducted in schizophrenia (SZ), an increasing number of researchers are turning their attention to different clinical and nonclinical populations, often using SZ findings as a model for research. Recent advances derived from SZ studies can therefore be utilized to make substantial progress on AH research in other groups. The objectives of this article were to (1) present an up-to-date review regarding the cognitive mechanisms of AHs in SZ, (2) review findings from cognitive research conducted in other clinical

Morphometric Development of Pediatric Auditory Centers: A Retrospective Analysis.

The medial geniculate body and transverse temporal gyrus are important during infancy since significant development occurs in auditory function. The main aim of this study was to evaluate shape differences of the medial geniculate body and morphometric parameters of the auditory cortex between different age and gender groups. A total number of 525 children's axial magnetic resonance image series were included in the presented study. These images were divided into three groups: early childhood (1-6 years of age), middle childhood (6-12 years of age), and teenage (12-18 years of age). Statistica

Psychoacoustical deficits related to bilateral subcortical hemorrhages. A case with apperceptive auditory agnosia.

We report a case of acute deafness secondary to bilateral hemorrhages involving the external capsule and extending to both temporal isthmi. The lesions probably disrupted both auditory radiations. Deafness disappeared within 2 weeks leading to a transient auditory agnosia for environmental and verbal sounds. Performance on audiological and neurolinguistic tests were consistent with the hypothesis of a deficit of non-specific auditory processes. Psychoacoustical deficits related to subcortical lesions are very rare and might differ from those due to cortical lesions by the lack of aphasia. The

Decreased somatosensory activity to non-threatening touch in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric disorder prevalent in combat veterans. Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that patients with PTSD exhibit abnormal responses to non-threatening visual and auditory stimuli, but have not examined somatosensory processing. Thirty male combat veterans, 16 with PTSD and 14 without, completed a tactile stimulation task during a 306-sensor magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording. Significant oscillatory neural responses were imaged using a beamforming approach. Participants also completed clinical assessments of PTSD, combat ex

Inattentional deafness to auditory alarms: Inter-individual differences, electrophysiological signature and single trial classification.

Inattentional deafness can have deleterious consequences in complex real-life situations (e.g. healthcare, aviation) leading to miss critical auditory signals. Such failure of auditory attention is thought to rely on top-down biasing mechanisms at the central executive level. A complementary approach to account for this phenomenon is to consider the existence of visual dominance over hearing that could be implemented via direct visual-to-auditory pathways. To investigate this phenomenon, thirteen aircraft pilots, equipped with a 32-channel EEG system, faced a low and high workload scenarii alo
