The isolation and characterization of a restriction endonuclease from Bacillus cereus IOC 243 are described. Several antibiotic resistance markers in Bacillus subtilis have been mapped by three-factor transduction crosses using bacteriophage PBS1. These markers, which are thought to be located in genes coding for ribosomal proteins, are within a segment comprising about 5 per cent of the B. subtilis genetic map, close to the major group of rRNA cistrons. The order of genetic makers in this region was found to be cysA14 mic-1 dagger str-1 (ery-1, ole-2) spc-2 bry-2 lin-2. The positions of neo-2, nea-1, and kan-2 are uncertain, although they are located in this region to the right of cysA14.

Many surface proteins of Gram-positive bacteria contain motifs, about 50 amino acids long, called S-layer homology (SLH) motifs. Bacillus anthracis, the causal agent of anthrax, synthesizes two S-layer proteins, each with three SLH motifs towards the amino-terminus. Bacillus methanolicus is a thermophilic methylotroph that uses methanol as a sustainable feedstock in biotechnological industry. Here, we developed the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing tool for B. methanolicus MGA3. This one-plasmid system induces Cas9-mediated double-strand breaks and exploits native DNA repair: homologous recombination for scarless deletions and gene replacements, and error-prone end-joining repair for mutagenesis in the absence of a repair template. A 77-year-old man, initially diagnosed with pneumonia presented with fever and was administered continuous amino acid preparations and meropenem. Bacillus cereus was isolated from two separate sets of blood cultures, leading to a diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection. Intra vesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillation therapy is a well-established treatment for superficial bladder cancer, though it can occasionally lead to rare systemic complications. We report the case of a man in his early 80s who developed acute onset dyspnoea after receiving BCG therapy.
