The bacteriology of pleural infection (TORPIDS): an exploratory metagenomics analysis through next generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Pleural infection is a common and severe disease with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. The knowledge of pleural infection bacteriology remains incomplete, as pathogen detection methods based on culture have insufficient sensitivity and are biased to selected microbes. We designed a study with the aim to discover and investigate the total microbiome of pleural infection and assess the correlation between bacterial patterns and 1-year survival of patients. METHODS: We assessed 243 pleural fluid samples from the PILOT study, a prospective observational study on pleural infecti…

Bacteriology of moderate-to-severe diabetic foot infections in two tertiary hospitals of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of people with diabetes will experience diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) during their lifetime. The present study was designed to determine the type of microorganisms isolated from the DFUs and their antibiotic resistance pattern, and to determine predisposing factors contributing to antibiotic resistance at the authors' wound care clinic in Qazvin, Iran. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to December 2017. One specimen for microbiological studies was obtained from the deep tissue. All demographic, clinical, and laboratory data and results of ulce

Bacteriology Of Diabetic Foot In Tertiary Care Hospital; Frequency, Antibiotic Susceptibility And Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot being one of the frequent and disabling complications of diabetes. In view of widespread regional variation in causative organisms and antimicrobial susceptibility, the current study aimed to determine frequency of causative organisms, their antimicrobial susceptibility and associated risk factors. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 6 months' duration at dept. of Medicine; PIMS Hospital Islamabad. Type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients with diabetic foot ulcer were enrolled after informed consent. Patients already receiving antibiotics, havin

Sinus bacteriology in patients with cystic fibrosis or primary ciliary dyskinesia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A correlation exists between the microbial flora of the upper and lower airways in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) or with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). The sinuses can function as a bacterial reservoir where gram-negative bacteria adapt to the airways and repeatedly are aspirated to and colonize the lungs according to the theory of the united (unified) airways. Whereas the pattern of bacterial flora in the lower airways has been extensively studied, the upper airways have drawn limited attention. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to review the literature that reported bacterial flora

Bacteriology of recurrent exacerbation of postoperative course in chronic rhinosinusitis in relation to asthma.

OBJECTIVES: Co-mobidity of asthma is known to result in a poor prognosis of post-endoscopic sinus surgery (post-ESS). Bacterial infection may play a key role in recurrent pathophysiology of sinusitis in post-ESS. METHODS: Forty-two patients with CRS associated with asthma undergoing ESS were enrolled. Bacterial culture was performed from the sinus cavity at the time of acute infectious episodes. Recurrence of sinonasal disease was analyzed in terms of steroid responsiveness and peak expiratory flow (PEF). RESULTS: Totally 75 aspirates were obtained during post-ESS; 2 repeat aspirates from 10

Relationships between cytology, bacteriology and vaginal discharge scores and reproductive performance in dairy cattle.

The objective was to compare three diagnostic approaches for intrauterine infection and inflammation: scoring of vaginal contents; quantification of percentage of nucleated cells that were polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) following endometrial cytology; and intra-uterine bacteriology. Dairy cows (n = 303) were examined twice, Days 28 (D28) and 42 (D42), where Day 0 = day of calving. Associations between gross vaginal inflammation scores, uterine cytology, and bacteriology, and subsequent reproductive performance were examined using multivariable models. There was fair agreement at D28 (Kappa…

Bacteriology and antibiogram of pathogens from wound infections at Dessie Laboratory, North-east Ethiopia.

Wound infections result in sepsis, limb loss, long hospital stays, higher costs, and are responsible for significant human mortality and morbidity worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the profile of pathogens cultured from wound infection and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. A retrospective analysis of bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility was done on wound swab samples that have been cultured at Dessie Regional Laboratory from 2003 to 2010. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were done using disc diffusion technique as per the standard of
