PURPOSE: This study was conducted to report the rare combination of necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, which both complicated neglected sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease.
METHODS: A case report is presented.
RESULTS: We describe the rare case of a previously healthy adult male patient who developed necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome associated with Streptococcus pyogenes and Bacteroides fragilis. Patient's response to emergency surgery followed by repeated debridements of necrotic tissue, together with aggressive fluid resuscitation, broad-spectrum antibiotic co…

This is a case report concerning a 2 years-old white boy who suffered sepsis fever with isolation in blood culture of an anaerobic bacteria … ension to the chest because of diaphragmatic adhesions. Culture of pus from the excised spleen grew bacteroides fragilis also, and metronidazole was added for therapy. Recover was uneventful with a 3 years follow-up. The authors emphasized the difficulty of clinical diagnosis of splenic abscess, the difficulty of bacteriological study of anaerobic bacteria an …

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV(PLWH) are a high-risk population for cancer. We conducted a pioneering study on the gut microbiota of PLW … icant alterations in beta diversity of the gut microbiota. The significantly decreased abundance of Bacteroides and Bacteroides vulgatus in PLWH-C showed a negative correlation with the Pathways in cancer pathway, and a positive correlation with Choline metabolism in cancer, Central carbon metabolism in cancer, and Proteoglycans in cancer pathways. Bacteroide …

The ability of different antibiotics to select for extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli remains a topic of discus … was initiated and given subcutaneously once a day for three consecutive days. CFU of E. coli ST131, Bacteroides, and Gram-positive aerobic bacteria in fecal samples were studied, with intervals, until day 8. Bacteroides was used as an indicator organism for impact on the Gram-negative anaerobic population. For three antibiotics, prolonged colonization was inv …

In the present work a family of novel secnidazole-derived Schiff base compounds and their copper(II) complexes were synthesized. The antimicrobial activities of the compounds were evaluated against clinically important anaerobic bacterial strains. The compounds exhibited in vitro antibacterial activity against Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Bacteroides vulgatus, Bacteroides ovatus, Parabacteroides distasonis and Fusubacterium nucleatum pathogenic anaerobic bacteria. Upon coordination to copper(II) the antibacterial activity significantly increased in several cases. Some de…

Antibiotic resistance has been evaluated among 36 Gram negative and anaerobic bacilli (10 Bacteroides, 11 Prevotella, 7 Porphyromonas and 8 Fusobacterium strains) isolated from clinical cases of caprine and ovine footrot (necrotic pododermatitis). The initial analysis on this bacterial consortium evaluates the relationships existing among antimicrobial resistance determinants, phenotype expression and mobilization potential. The Bacteroides strains were generally resistant to penicillins, first-generation cephalosporins, tetracycline and erythromycin, and expressed low level of β-lactamase act…

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity. However, the longitudinal dynamics of the gut mic … ed altered gestational microbiome progression. This was characterized by a persistent enrichment of Bacteroides stercoris and Bacteroides eggerthii. Microbial pathways including amino acid biosynthesis and 2-oxocarboxylic acid metabolism were perturbed before diagnosis, with Bacteroides stercoris as a key contributor. Co-occurrence networks revealed Bacteroid …

We report two cases of gas gangrene developed from sacral pressure sores. The first case was clostridial and the second, non-clostridial gas … mosum in addition to Staphylococcus intermedius, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacteroides fragilis. Blood culture yielded Bacteroides fragilis. The patient died 50 days after admission in spite of surgical debridement and aggressive therapy with high doses of antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen. The results of early studies showed that anaerobes account for 20% of all bacteremias; more-recent data suggest that these organisms account for approximately 4% (0.5%-9%) of bacteremias ( or approximately one case per 1,000 admissions), with variation by geographic location, hospital patient demographics, and especially, patient age. Elderly persons seem to be at increased risk for developing anaerobic bacteremia while young children (2-5 years of age) are at the least risk. Bacteroides fragilis is the most common blood isolate recovered from patients with anaerobic bacteremia; this organism …

The uteri of 77 postparturient dairy cows were sampled. Samples were cultured aerobically and anaerobically, and the nature of bacterial growth was identified. A mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infection was found in 55% of the samples. Actinomyces pyogenes was the predominant aerobic species; it was found in 70% of the samples, whereas Bacteroides melaninogenicus was the most frequent anaerobic species isolated. Altogether, 16 species belonging to the genus Bacteroides were identified with variable frequencies. It appears that more than one Bacteroides species colonizes the uterus of a …

In eight experiments utilizing 28 animals each, germfree rats with and without ischemically or hemorrhagically strangulated closed loop intestinal segments were contaminated with either one of four common intestinal anaerobic bacteria, or a combination of two or three bacteria previously found to be innocuous in pure culture. The results showed that: a) in pure culture, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius were innocuous; b) Fusobacterium necrophorum alone was a very lethal organism that produced intense, confluent, intraperitoneal, fibrous adhes…

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent liver cancer associated with global health. The tumor microenvironment's (TME) microbial composition significantly influences HCC's development and prognosis. This study analyzed bacterial 16S rRNA genes from liver cancer patients' tumor, adjacent tumor, and normal tissues, revealing distinct microbiome profiles between tumor and normal tissues. HCC microbiota was more abundant, with Bacteroides, Ochrobactrum, Akkermansia, and Lactobacillus as the most prevalent genera. Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive (HBV+) and HBV-negative (HBV-) HCC tissues sho…

Bacteroides sp (Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Bacteroides oralis, and Bacteroides fragilis), peptostreptococci, and fusobacteria are important pathogens in respiratory tract infections (RTI). These organisms are often recovered mixed with other aerobic, facultative, and anaerobic bacteria. Evidence supporting their virulence is provided by studies showing their synergistic potentials in mixed infections and their increased virulence when encapsulated. A recent increase in numbers of beta-lactamase producing strains of anaerobic gram-negative bacteria in RTI has been associated with increased fa…

The objective of this study was to evaluate the progression of the uterine microbiota from calving until establishment of metritis. Uterine … hy cows could be discriminated using relative abundance of bacterial genera at 0, 2, and 6 ± 2 dpp. Bacteroides was the main genus associated with metritis because it was the only genus that showed significantly greater abundance in cows with metritis. As the abundance of Bacteroides organisms increased, the uterine discharge score, a measure of uterine healt …
