African American and Latino bereaved parent health outcomes after receiving perinatal palliative care: A comparative mixed methods case study.

BACKGROUND: Death of one's infant is devastating to parents, negatively impacting couple relationships and their own health. The impact of a prenatally diagnosed life-limiting fetal condition (LLFC) on parents of minority status is unclear. AIM: This comparative mixed methods case study examined the person characteristics, quality of perinatal palliative care (PPC) received and parent health outcomes. METHODS: Bereaved couples, 11 mothers and 3 fathers of minority or mixed races (11 African American and Latino, 1 White Latino and 2 White parents) completed the survey; 7 were interviewed. RE

Longitudinal Trajectories of Grief Before and After Bereavement and Their Association With Mental Health Outcomes: A Pilot Prospective Cohort Study From the China Grief Cohort 2025.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) impairs psychophysiological well-being and social functioning. Although post-death grief trajectories have been well-documented, pre-death grief trajectories remain understudied, particularly within the same cohort. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory pilot study aimed to identify candidate longitudinal trajectories of grief before and after bereavement and to examine their associations with subsequent mental health outcomes, with the goal of generating hypotheses to inform a larger confirmatory cohort. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted a…

Unpaid care, time taken off work and healthcare costs before and after partner bereavement among same-gender and different-gender partners: A national population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has demonstrated higher levels of psychological distress for bereaved same-gender partners compared to different-gender partners. Economic outcomes have not yet been examined. AIM: To examine whether there are differences between same- and different-gender civil partners or spouses (hereafter 'partners') in the amount of unpaid care provided in the 3 months pre-bereavement, and time taken off work and formal healthcare used in the 3 months pre- or post-bereavement. DESIGN: A population-based cross-sectional survey of bereaved partners from England/Wales was conduc…

Grief-related social media use and perceived social media support among bereaved students: associations with grief, mental health, and continuing bonds.

BACKGROUND: Many students have experienced the loss of a close person during their academic career. This distressing event can have a strong impact on their daily and academic functioning and increases the risk of mental health problems. Social media provide a new space for grieving and maintaining continuing bonds with the deceased. While most students use social media applications daily, little is known of their grief-related social media use. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of grief-related social media use and perceived social media support, with the grieving process,

Support needs, support use and perceived helpfulness of support in a cohort of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from a longitudinal survey.

BACKGROUND: The negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on grief outcomes are well documented. However, less is known about the evolving support needs of people bereaved during this time, what support they used and, crucially, how this support helped (or hindered) their coping, with applicability to contemporary bereavement support contexts. METHODS: A longitudinal survey of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, over four time points: baseline (T1; n = 711), c. 8 (T2; n = 384), 13 (T3; n = 295), and 25 (T4; n = 185) months post-bereavement. The perinatal bereavement project: development and evaluation of supportive guidelines for families experiencing stillbirth and neonatal death in Southeast Brazil-a quasi-experimental before-and-after study.

BACKGROUND: For most parents, getting pregnant means having a child. Generally, the couple outlines plans and has expectations regarding the baby. When these plans are interrupted because of a perinatal loss, it turns out to be a traumatic experience for the family. Validating the grief of these losses has been a challenge to Brazilian society, which is evident considering the childbirth care offered to bereaved families in maternity wards. Positively assessed care that brings physical and emotional memories about the baby has a positive impact on the bereavement process that family undergoes.…

Saying good-bye or final conversations between terminally ill inpatients and family members in the last weeks of life: a nationwide survey of bereaved families.

PURPOSE: In the last days of life, saying good-bye between terminally ill patients and their family members-sharing meaningful final conversations-is considered a core element of a good death. However, the role of healthcare professionals in facilitating this process remains insufficiently examined. This study aimed to assess bereaved family members' perceptions of (1) the achievement of saying good-bye and (2) the appropriateness of support timing. METHODS: This nationwide cross-sectional survey included bereaved family members of cancer patients who died in inpatient hospices or palliative

Satisfaction with end-of-life care and self-rated health among bereaved family members; a descriptive cross-sectional study in an intensive care context.

BACKGROUND: In intensive care units, critically ill patients often require life-sustaining interventions. When these no longer benefit the patient, care is often transferred to end-of-life care. Family members may find themselves in a stressful situation, since they often act as proxies in decision-making processes, and support the patient nearing the end of life, while also coping with their own grief. The aim of this study is to investigate bereaved family members' satisfaction with care, decision-making, the patients' last hours of life, and their own self-rated health in end-of-life care i

"It's a club nobody wanted to join, but we're there": Focus groups on end-of-life care experiences and long-term outcomes of bereaved neuro-oncology caregivers.

BACKGROUND: The disease burden of malignant brain tumours poses significant challenges to both patients and their family caregivers. Even years post-bereavement, neuro-oncology caregivers can suffer serious and long-lasting adverse outcomes. A previous quantitative survey (reported separately) highlighted significant challenges experienced by bereaved neuro-oncology caregivers. This current work explored these issues further through focus groups. OBJECTIVE: To identify opportunities to enhance support, we investigated caregiver experiences during the patient's end-of-life phase, the dying pro…

Support from New York City's office of chief medical examiner for people bereaved by drug poisoning: development and implementation of the family support program.

Bereavement from loss related to drug poisoning, the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, is associated with elevated risk for prolonged grief disorder, substance use, and poor mental health outcomes. Despite this, few interventions specifically target survivors of overdose loss. The Family Support Program (FSP) is a novel, social worker-delivered bereavement support service provided by the Drug Intelligence and Intervention Group of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner for family, friends, and other close social network members bereaved by drug poisoning. …

Getting Cancer Is "Just Bad Luck": Exploring Bereaved Emerging and Young Adults' Cancer Risk Uncertainty After Caring for a Parent With Advanced Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Emerging and young adult caregivers (EYACs) who provide care to a parent with advanced cancer are underrepresented in caregiving scholarship, and yet, are not uncommon. Little is known about the psychosocial impacts of caring for a parent at this age or how EYACs manage their uncertainty regarding their own, potentially elevated, future cancer risk. AIMS: To employ Uncertainty Management Theory (UMT) to examine how bereaved EYACs of a parent who died of advanced cancer appraise and manage their uncertainty regarding their personal cancer risk. METHODS: We conducted a secondary an

Associations between depressive symptoms, attachment style, and continuing bonds among Japanese bereaved family members of patients with cancer: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent among bereaved family members, yet their psychosocial determinants remain unclear. Attachment styles and continuing bonds are recognized as important factors influencing bereavement outcomes. However, evidence regarding their associations with depressive symptoms and adaptiveness of continuing bonds remains inconclusive and varies across cultures. This study examined the associations of attachment styles and continuing bonds with depressive symptoms, including potential interactions, among bereaved Japanese families. METHODS: This cross-sec…

Effects of the Family Bereavement Program on academic outcomes, educational expectations and job aspirations 6 years later: the mediating role of parenting and youth mental health problems.

Experiencing the death of a parent during childhood is associated with a variety of difficulties, including lower academic achievement, that have implications for functioning in childhood and adulthood. This study examines effects of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP), a preventive intervention for parentally-bereaved youth and their caregivers, on grade point averages (GPA), educational expectations and job aspirations of youths 6 years after the intervention. A total of 244 bereaved youths ages 8-16 and their caregivers were randomized to either the FBP or a comparison group that received …
