Ion-induced change in fluorescence is a straight-forward method for detection of toxic metal ions showing immediate response. Cadmium ions are toxic to the environment. We report in this paper a piperidine-4-one-based fluorescent chemosensor of Cd2+ ions, designed and synthesized by a simple method. The compound is characterized using infra-red (IR) and 1 H-NMR spectral techniques. The chemosensor showed Cd2+ ion selectivity and sensitivity in aqueous solution. The stoichiometry and the binding constants were determined using fluorescence spectroscopy. Piperidine-4-one shows a 1:1 stoichiometr

BACKGROUND: Ortho-phenylphenol (OPP) is a fungicide used in fruit packaging plants for the control of fungal infestations during storage. Its application leads to the production of large wastewater volumes which according to the European legislation should be treated on site. In spite of this, no efficient treatment systems are currently available, and the development of biological systems based on tailored-made pesticide-degrading inocula for the treatment of these wastewaters is an appealing solution.
RESULTS: Enrichment cultures from a soil collected from a wastewater disposal site resulte

BACKGROUND: Elephantorrhiza elephantina (Ee) and Pentanisia prunelloides (Pp) are two medicinal plants which are widely used to remedy various ailments including diarrhoea, dysentery, inflammation, fever, rheumatism, heartburn, tuberculosis, haemorrhoids, skin diseases, perforated peptic ulcers and sore joints in southern Africa (South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe). The following study was conducted to explore the in vitro cytotoxicity, antioxidant properties and phytochemical profile of the two medicinal plants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cytotoxicity of the aqueous and methanol

Transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of enamines is undoubtedly a useful and environment-friendly method for the preparation of optically pure chiral amines and amine derivatives. Over the last few decades, the use of transition metal catalysts containing chiral phosphorus or phosphine-oxazoline ligands attracted much attention for the hydrogenation of unprotected enamines. A number of efficient chiral catalysts have been developed, and some of them have shown high potential for the application in the synthesis of optical chiral amines in both laboratory and industry. This

Contact urticaria is a form of immediate hypersensitivity reaction that is being noted with increasing frequency. This report illustrates an unusual presentation of contact urticaria in the form of an immediate reaction to a component of plaster cast material. The substance involved was ortho-phenylphenate, a preservative. It has not been previously implicated in a contact urticaria reaction.

The presence of various contaminants in aquatic environments has raised concerns regarding the potential consequences of mixtures of different agents from diverse origins, including heavy metals, polyfluorinated compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ether, as well as a wide range of pharmaceutical compounds and their byproducts. To assess the relationship between these compounds and their impact on marine organisms, varying concentrations of a blend comprising 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether 47 (BDE-47), carbamazepine (CBZ), and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) were introduc

A multi-residue method for the analysis of semi-volatile organic pollutants in inland groundwater (river water) at ultra-trace levels in compliance with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) has been developed and validated by stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and thermal desorption coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (SBSE-TD-GC-MS/MS(QqQ)). The method includes various families of compounds included in the WFD and other compounds listed as persistent organic pollutants that are banned in the Stockholm Convention of Persistent Organic Pollutants, such a

The safety of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is correlated with the quality of the production process. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and furans - PCDD/Fs), and heavy metals such as lead and cadmium were investigated because they can represent a risk for the consumer. The levels of these compounds in water, feed and specimens of trout farmed with two different feeds (A and B) were assessed. Their accumulation in muscle of A and B trout was evaluated and their dependence on the levels of feed contamination was considered. The results showed
