Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Other Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Sexual and Reproductive Health in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and questioning youth represent a diverse population who are affected by many sexual health inequities, including increased risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To provide comprehensive sexual health care for LGBT youth, providers should set the stage with a nonjudgmental, respectful tone. Providers should be competent in recognizing symptoms of STIs and HIV and aware of the most up-to-date screening guidelines for LGBT youth. Sexual health visits should also focus on prevention, including safer sex

Sexual sensation seeking, sexual compulsivity, and high-risk sexual behaviours among gay/bisexual men in Southwest China.

High-risk sexual behaviours (HRSBs), such as having male casual sexual partners (MCSPs) and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI), are combined with a high prevalence of HIV infection among gay/bisexual men. Sexual sensation seeking (SSS) and sexual compulsivity (SC), which are intrapersonal factors, were observed to have associations with HRSB among gay/bisexual men in Western nations. The aim of the study was to examine the relationships between SSS, SC, socio-demographic factors, and HRSB (defined as having MCSP and UAI with MCSP) among self-identified gay and bisexual men in Southwest China.

Identity-related growth and loss in a sample of HIV-positive gay and bisexual men: initial scale development and psychometric evaluation.

Past examinations of the impact of chronic illness on identity have focused primarily on positive adaptation (i.e., benefit finding or posttraumatic growth). Given that associations between these constructs and psychosocial wellbeing are equivocal, greater investigation is needed into interactions among perceived positive and negative identity changes pursuant to illness. A cross-sectional study was conducted between 2006 and 2007 with an ethnically diverse sample of 129 HIV-positive gay and bisexual men. Participants completed a brief quantitative survey, including a new measure, the Impact o

At the intersection of marginalised identities: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people's experiences of injecting drug use and hepatitis C seroconversion.

Although the levels of injecting drug use among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations are high, we know little about their experiences of injecting drugs or living with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The loss of traditional family and cultural ties means connection to community is important to the well-being of LGBT populations. Although some kinds of drug use are normalised within many LGBT communities, injecting drug use continues to be stigmatised. This exploratory qualitative study of people with newly acquired HCV used semi-structured interviews to explore particip

Health beliefs and attitudes associated with HPV vaccine intention among young gay and bisexual men in the Southeastern United States.

Gay and bisexual men are at increased risk of anal cancer as a result of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Prophylactic vaccination is a potentially effective strategy for preventing anal cancer in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with gay and bisexual men's intention to receive HPV vaccine. In the fall of 2010, 179 self-identified gay and bisexual men (mean age 22 years) completed an Internet-based questionnaire assessing beliefs and attitudes toward HPV vaccination. Men were recruited from college-based and Internet venues throughout the south

Bisexual behavior among Chinese young migrant men who have sex with men: implications for HIV prevention and intervention.

Data from 307 young migrant men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing were analyzed to examine bisexual behavior and the associated sociodemographic and behavioral factors among Chinese young migrant MSM. More than one-fourth (27%) of the MSM were also concurrently engaged in sexual behavior with women (MSMW). Among MSMW, 8.4% were infected with HIV, and 10.8% with Syphilis, compared to 4.9% and 23.7%, respectively, among men who have sex with men only (MSM-only). Various HIV-related risk behaviors among MSMW were similar to those of MSM-only, such as unprotected anal sex, multiple sexual par

An analysis of tobacco industry marketing to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations: strategies for mainstream tobacco control and prevention.

Research on adult tobacco use consistently shows a higher prevalence among lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) populations than among the general population-reasons why are largely unknown, and counterstrategies are critical. Tobacco industry marketing, uncovered when the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) forced companies to share its internal documents, provided insight. The American Legacy Foundation uncovered the industry campaign Project SCUM (Sub-Culture Urban Marketing) aimed at gays and the homeless. The formerly secret documents revealed specific marketing toward LGBT, whose rates

Addressing the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, and questioning clients within university psychiatric services: reflections and recommendations.

Concerns still exist among lesbian-, gay-, bisexual-, transgendered-, and queer-identified individuals (LGBTQ individuals) about their reception and treatment by psychiatric service providers. The Psychiatric Service at the University of Toronto and the Office of LGBTQ Resources and Programs convened a committee to address expanding the capacities of the Service related to the needs of LGBTQ and questioning students. In this paper, we describe the committee's role, initiatives, and successes and discuss challenges encountered in the process. The model of community development drawn from in thi

Preventing sexual risk behaviors among gay, lesbian, and bisexual adolescents: the benefits of gay-sensitive HIV instruction in schools.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared sexual risk behaviors of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) and heterosexual adolescents and evaluated associations between gay-sensitive HIV instruction and risk behaviors of GLB youths. METHODS: A random sample of high school students and HIV education teachers completed surveys. Self-reported risk behaviors of heterosexual and GLB adolescents were compared, with control for student and community demographic characteristics. Sexual risk behaviors of GLB youths in schools with and without gay-sensitive instruction were compared. RESULTS: GLB youths reported mor

Correlates of heavy substance use among young gay and bisexual men: The San Francisco Young Men's Health Study.

Correlates of heavy substance use among a household-based sample of young gay and bisexual men (n=428) were identified and the odds ratio (OR) was calculated. A total of 13.6% reported frequent, heavy alcohol use and 43% reported polydrug use. Compared with men employed in professional occupations, men in service positions (OR=3.77) and sales positions (OR=2.51) were more likely to be heavy alcohol consumers. Frequent gay bar attendance and multiple sex partners were related to heavy alcohol use, as well as to polydrug use. Polydrug users were more likely to be HIV seropositive (OR=2.05) or of

The spectrum of medical conditions and symptoms before acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in homosexual and bisexual men infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

The full range and occurrence of medical conditions in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) before they develop illnesses that define acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have not been systematically or completely described. In a retrospective and prospective cohort study, 1,073 homosexual and bisexual men in three US cities were interviewed and examined twice per year from January 1988 to September 1992. Study participants were from San Francisco, California (273 HIV-seropositive and 432 HIV-seronegative men), Denver, Colorado (107 positive and 129 negative men), and

Behavioral characteristics and laboratory parameters in homo- and bisexual men in West Berlin: an evaluation of five years of testing and counselling on AIDS.

Sera of 1980 homo- and bisexual men who visited the Landesinstitut für Tropenmedizin Berlin (West) between April 1983 and December 1987 were tested for HIV antibodies; 24.3% were positive. Of HIV-antibody-positive men, 78.9% reported both active and passive anal intercourse, 58.8%, rectal enemas, and 53.3%, use of butyl nitrite. There was a sexual partner with known positive HIV-antibody status or AIDS in 33.9%, and in 32.4% there was a history of sexual activity in the USA. In the year before the test, 18.8% had had more than 50 partners. All these behavioral characteristics were found to be

Monosexual/Plurisexual: A Concise History.

Monosexuality and bisexuality (attraction to one and more than one gender/sex, respectively) are historical constructs, as are monomodal (e.g., gender/sex-based) and multimodal concepts of erotic attraction. I provide a brief outline of distinctions between single-gender and multi-gender attractions as they emerged in continental Europe. Nineteenth-century conceptualizations of sexual orientation in terms of gender-exclusivity were animated by medical frames for socio-sexual disfavor and aversion. From the early 1880s bisexuality became framed as a stage of "sexual inversion," and, from 1891, …

Discrimination and depressive symptoms in transgender and gender-diverse individuals and lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults: Examining associations across the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Both transgender/gender-diverse (TGGD) and lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) individuals experience discrimination tied to their identities, which contributes to poorer mental health outcomes. Research frequently combines these groups under the broader LGBTQ+ label, potentially obscuring the distinct experiences of each subgroup. This study investigated how discrimination relates to depressive symptoms in TGGD and LGB individuals and whether these patterns vary between groups. METHODS: Data were drawn from the HEARD (Health Equity, Awareness, and Resilience to Discrimination) projec

Inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Populations in Mongolian Health Policy: A Scoping Review and Critical Discourse Analysis.

PURPOSE: This review explored the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) people in current Mongolian health policies, providing an overview and identifying gaps to improve inclusion. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of health policies and used critical discourse analysis (CDA) to explore how policy language constructs LGBTQI identities, representation in policies, and opportunities for inclusion. CDA assessed LGBTQI inclusion across three levels: textual, contextual, and societal. We included currently active, publicly accessible policies relevant

National Distribution of Bisexual and Parthenogenetic Haemaphysalis longicornis of Japan, and a Real-Time PCR-Based Method to Distinguish the Two Reproductive Groups.

The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, is a well-known vector of several zoonoses including SFTS and Japanese spotted fever. This species consists of two different reproductive forms, bisexual and parthenogenetic, which are suggested to have differential roles in disease transmission. In Japan, the distributions of these forms have been suspected from sex bias in each population. Meanwhile, recent insights about the origin of the parthenogenetic form suggest the possibility of individual-level diagnosis using mitochondrial phylogeny. To reassess the current distribution of those

Effects of an Audiovisual Intervention to Improve Competence to Consent to Research Participation Among Young Gay and Bisexual Men Who Use Stimulants.

PURPOSE: Standard consent practices in HIV research often do not facilitate truly competent informed consent. We examined a brief audiovisual intervention to enhance competence to consent to participate in a hypothetical trial aimed at promoting sexual health and reducing stimulant use among young gay and bisexual men who use stimulants. METHODS: Between June 2024 and January 2025, we enrolled 115 young gay and bisexual men aged 16-24 years who were at risk for HIV transmission or acquisition and reported recent stimulant use. Participants were randomized to standard consent (i.e., written in

Drug Dependence Severity and Associated Factors Among Cisgender Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Japan.

This study aimed to assess the severity of drug dependence and identify factors associated with high dependence among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) in Japan. Data were collected from a nationwide community-based online survey conducted from November 2022 to January 2023. gbMSM with a history of drug use completed the Japanese version of the Drug Abuse Screening Test-20 (DAST-20). Multivariable logistic regression explored factors linked to high DAST-20 scores. Of 4,472 cisgender gbMSM, 19.1% (853/4472) reported lifetime drug use, and 3.3% (146/4472) reported use in

Lower PrEP Retention among Young and Black Clients Accessing PrEP at a Cluster of Safety Net Clinics for Gay and Bisexual Men.

Young men of color who have sex with men are vulnerable to HIV and experience poor PrEP uptake and retention. We conducted a secondary data analysis and calculated adjusted Prevalence Odds Ratios (aPORs) for PrEP retention along with 95% CIs at 90, 180, and 360 days at an organization running safety net clinics in Texas for gay and bisexual men. We found statistically significant association with age, race, in-clinic versus telehealth appointments, and having healthcare insurance.
