Bisphenol A (BPA) is a high-volume, synthetic compound found in epoxy resins and plastics used in food packaging. Food is believed to be a major source of BPA intake. In this study, we measured the concentration of BPA in convenience samplings of foodstuffs purchased in Dallas, Texas. Sampling entailed collection of 204 samples of fresh, frozen, and canned foods in two rounds in 2010. BPA was positive in 73% of the canned food samples, while it was found in only 7% of non-canned foods at low concentrations. The results of this food sampling program were used to calculate adult dietary intakes

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (4,40-isopropylidenediphenol, BPA) is known to adversely affect various organs. The liver is reported to be affected by BPA in animal studies. However, there are few studies in humans on the effects of BPA on the liver. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between urinary BPA levels and liver function in elderly subjects using repeated measurements.
METHODS: From 2008 to 2010, a total of 560 elderly subjects residing in Seoul were each evaluated up to three times. At the first visit, demographic data, environmental exposure and lifestyle information were obtained f

Bisphenol A (BPA), a xenoestrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical, is used in many consumer products worldwide and is widely detected in the environment and in food. Combining the advantages of evanescent wave fiber optic sensor and microfluidic technology, an all-fiber optofluidics-based bioassay platform (AFOB) was developed for the rapid immunoassay and assessment of BPA. The captured molecular BPA-bovine serum albumin was covalently immobilized on the surface of the fiber optic sensor. A mixture of different concentrations of BPA and a certain concentration of fluorescence-labeled anti-BPA

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in numerous products, such as plastic bottles and food containers, from which it frequently leaches out and is consumed by humans. There is a growing public concern that BPA exposure may pose a significant threat to human health. Moreover, due to the widespread and constant nature of BPA exposure, not only adults but fetuses and neonates are also exposed to BPA. There is mounting evidence that developmental exposures to chemicals from our environment, including BPA, contribute to diseases late in life; yet, studies of how early life exposures specifically alter the im

Bisphenol A (BPA), a high volume production chemical compound attracts growing attention as a health-relevant xenobiotic in humans. It can directly bind to hormone receptors, enzymes, and ion channels to become biologically active. In this study we show that BPA acts as a potent blocker of voltage-activated Ca(2+) channels. We determined the mechanisms of block and the structural elements of BPA essential for its action. Macroscopic Ba(2+) / Ca(2+) currents through native L-, N-, P/Q-, T-type Ca(2+) channels in rat endocrine GH(3) cells, mouse dorsal root ganglion neurons or cardiac myocytes,

Bisphenol A (BPA) is commonly used as a monomer in polycarbonate plastics. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of BPA on cognitive functions and oxidative stress in the brain tissue of rats and if co-administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant, can modulate the effect of BPA on cognitive functions and prevent any possible oxidative stress. The BPA was administered per orally (p.o) in two doses 2 and 20 μg/kg for 28 days. Cognitive functions were assessed using step-down latency (SDL) on a passive avoidance apparatus and spatial navigation task on Morris water

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic environmental toxin widely used for the production of plastics. Frequent human exposure to this chemical has been proposed to be a potential public health risk. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of BPA on germ cell cyst breakdown and primordial follicle formation. Pregnant mice were treated with BPA at doses of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08 mg/kg body weight/day from 12.5 day postcoitum. BPA was delivered orally to pregnant female mice. A dose-response relationship was observed with increased BPA exposure level associated with more oocytes in germ c

Bisphenol A (BPA)-imprinted polymeric microspheres were synthesized by modified precipitation polymerization (MPP) method. Influences of cross-linker, monomer, porogen volume, and agitation on polymerization were investigated. Proper amount of cross-linker ethyleneglycol-dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was critical to achieve narrowly dispersed microspheres. For template BPA, monomer 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) was better than MAA to get the best imprinted effects. The optimum template/monomer ratio was 1:6. Increasing porogen volume increased size dispersity and decreased binding characters. Agitation incr

The developing fetus is uniquely sensitive to perturbation by chemicals with hormone-like activity. The adverse effects of prenatal diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure are a classic example. Since concern has been mounting regarding the human health and environmental effects of bisphenol A (BPA), a high-production-volume chemical with estrogenic activity used in the synthesis of plastics, we investigated its long-term effects in an experimental animal model that was previously shown useful in studying the adverse effects of developmental exposure to DES. Outbred female CD-1 mice were treated on

It has been proposed that a global decline in sperm counts, semen quality, and several male reproductive disorders are associated with exposure to environmental chemicals. Thus, the present study examined the effects of two estrogenic chemicals, octylphenol (OP) and bisphenol A (BPA), on epididymal sperm counts and sperm motility, luteinizing hormone (LH)-releasing hormone (LHRH)-stimulated plasma LH and steroid hormones, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), and accessory reproductive organs in pubertal male Wistar rats. Fifty-day-old rats in the OP group (n=11) and BPA group (n=11) received

Exposure to environmental contaminants known as endocrine disruptors (EDs) alters the development and function of reproductive organs in several species. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic chemical that leaches from dental materials and plastic food and beverage containers. BPA has been found in sewage, surface and drinking water, and therefore poses a potentially significant risk for human and wildlife. Prenatal exposure of rodents to environmentally relevant doses of BPA alters the development of the reproductive organs of male and female offspring. Species with temperature dependent sex det

BACKGROUND: There is broad human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used for the production of plastic products. BPA is reported to affect preimplantation embryos or fetuses and alter their postnatal development at doses typically found in the environment. We measured contamination of BPA in various kinds of human biological fluids by a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
METHODS: Blood samples were obtained from healthy premenopausal women, women with early and full-term pregnancy, and umbilical cord at full-term delivery. Ovarian follicula

Bisphenol S (BPS) is widely used as a substitute for bisphenol A (BPA) but has also been identified as an endocrine-disrupting compound with considerable biotoxicity. Compared with BPA, BPS exhibits higher chemical stability, and studies on its biodegradation remain limited. In this work, an efficient strategy for BPS biodegradation was developed using a bacterial laccase immobilized in copper-nucleotide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The laccase gene from Bacillus licheniformis was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, achieving an extracellular activity of 373.8 U/L. The recombinan

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widespread endocrine-disrupting chemical with potential relevance to prostate cancer. This review provides a BPA-centered synthesis of evidence from human epidemiological studies, animal models, human prostate tissue and human-derived systems, and mechanistic investigations, while considering major BPA substitutes only where they inform substitution safety and class-informed assessment. Human studies provide limited and heterogeneous signals linking BPA exposure to prostate cancer incidence, prostate-specific antigen concentrations, and post-diagnosis outcomes, but causa

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental contaminant, induces endothelial dysfunction through multiple mechanisms; however, its role in triggering ferroptosis remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effect of BPA on ferroptosis induction in endothelial cells and its association with Nrf2 signaling and endothelial dysfunction. Human endothelial cells were exposed to BPA (10, 50, and 100 μM) for 24 h, and the expression of ferroptosis markers (GPX4, SLC7A11, ACSL4, TFR1, FPN, FTH), Nrf2 and its downstream antioxidant enzymes (SOD2, HO-1, NQO1, CAT), oxidative stress m

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical widely detected in human populations, has been implicated in metabolic disorders following early-life exposure. However, the long-term effects of developmental BPA exposure on adipose metabolism under post-weaning dietary challenge remain incompletely understood. Pregnant C57BL/6J mice received BPA in drinking water at a maternal nominal target exposure of 50 μg/kg/day from gestational day 6 to postnatal day 21. After weaning, offspring were fed a normal diet or high-fat diet and evaluated at PND22, PND36, and PND91. Body weight, adipose morp
