Ceramics are more and more frequently under consideration for construction of blood-contacting devices, i.e. cardiac valves or cardiac assist devices. This study evaluated the haemolysis eventually initiated in vitro by ceramic powders (Al2O3, ZrO2/Y2O3, AlN, B4C, BN, SiC, Si3 N4, TiB2, TiN, TiC), graphite and diamond. The chemical composition of the powders was studied by X-ray microprobe and various other methods, and BET specific areas were determined. The haemolysis was almost zero for all powders, except AlN which showed slight haemolysis and TiB2 which had high haemolytic power.

A study on the distribution of ABO blood groups was carried out on 85 patients with clinically and bacteriologically proven shigellosis. A significant association (P less than 0.01) of blood group B was observed with shigellosis cases in comparison to controls from whom no Shigella species or other enteropathogen could be isolated. Patients with isoagglutinin B or those who possess blood group B antigen may be at a relatively increased risk of shigellosis.

The blood ordering practices for acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding were assessed in 162 consecutive patients presenting with haematemesis admitted via the Accident and Emergency Centre. The patients were classified according to their estimated blood loss and haemoglobin level at the time of admission, and the amounts of blood ordered and given in the next 24 h were determined. The crossmatch: transfusion (CT) ratio was very high in one group (14.9), although the overall ratio of 2.4 was acceptable. There were marked variations in the ordering pattern of different medical officers, possibly…

The indications of blood products are now well established, and the optimal use of these products requires a perfect knowledge of both their characteristics and the risks created by their transfusion to patients. The description, since 1982, of HIV infection following the administration of blood components and plasma derivatives has prompted important modifications in the use of blood products, especially in intensive care units. At the moment, diluted albumin must be preferred to fresh frozen plasma, except in very special and rare cases. Modern viral inactivation techniques have made the hae…

This paper reviews studies on the permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier to substances that are not transported by cellular mechanisms. The intercellular movement of small molecules and ions from the ciliary processes into the posterior chamber is restricted by tight junctions between the nonpigmented epithelial cells. For plasma proteins the endothelial cells of the capillaries constitute an additional barrier. The number of tight junctional strands and the electrical conductance of the epithelium is such that it can be classified as a border case between leaky and tight epithelia. The iri…

Blood transfusion therapy carries a small risk of complications-usually minor-which include allergic reactions, hemolysis, and the transmission of infections. Fatal hemolytic transfusion reactions are rare and are usually due to human error resulting in administration of ABO incompatible blood. Viral hepatitis (usually non-A, non-B) remains the major infectious complication, with a risk of two to five percent. The transmission by transfusion of AIDS has also been reported, but the risk is much lower-about 0.001%. As yet, no blood substitute is available for clinical use. Routine hepatitis B te…

The introduction of the concept of blood-ocular barriers in the ophthalmic literature is briefly reviewed. Two main blood-ocular barriers are proposed: the blood-aqueous barrier and the blood-retinal barrier. The blood-aqueous barrier is formed by an epithelial barrier located in the nonpigmented layer of the ciliary epithelium and in the posterior iridial epithelium, and by the endothelium of the iridial vessels. Both these layers have tight junctions of the "leaky" type. The pereability of the blood-aqueous barrier shows a significant degree of pressure-dependent diffusion associated with tr…

A 57-year-old alcoholic man sustained permanent bilateral blindness and optic atrophy as a complication of hemorrhage from peptic ulcer disease. Post-hemorrhagic visual loss occurs in middle-aged, debilitated persons a short time after repeated episodes of hemorrhage from any site.

During the last 25 years, cutaneous biologists have been particularly interested in abnormal cutaneous vascular patterns, the profusion of capillary anastomoses, the leakiness of venules, clotting, fibrinolysis, and blood viscosity. As a result, the effects of hypoxia and the factors that encourage new vessel proliferation are better understood than before. Only when the biologic behavior of the two extremes of growth from hypoplasia to hyperplasia is studied and compared can the blood supply of a tissue be understood. Hyperplastic tissues are seen in wounds, psoriasis, cancer, and in selected…

Genetic markers in people of African ancestry and tables comparing Africans and Europeans are compiled to illustrate the blood differences. The existence of the African genetic characters, R0 (cDe), D-u and Ee (e-s, ce-s) in an Rh-Hr system are discussed. The high incidence of R0 (81.9%) in Africans is evident. Studies of ABO and the sickle cell trait in East Africa reveal the African tribes responsible for the original populating of Africa. The pygmoids of Uganda and Zaire, the Nilotes of West Nile, and the Bantu of Uganda are possibly responsible. Subgroups of A antigen in Africans and Europ…
