Translocation (8;21)(q22;q22) involves fusion of the AML1 gene with the ETO gene, generating an AML1/ETO fusion transcript that can be detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We studied the interleukin 8 (IL-8) gene expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the IL-8 serum concentration in patients with idiopathic minimal lesion nephrotic syndrome (IMLNS) and other glomerulopathies. PBMC from eight of the nine (IMLNS) patients in relapse demonstrated the presence of IL-8 mRNA. All three IMLNS patients in remission (P = 0.0026 when compared to patients in relapse) and the two patients with nephrotic syndrome with other glomerulopathies failed to elicit an IL-8 mRNA response. In the peripheral blood of normal adults we identified a subpopulation of mature human T cells that lacks expression of CD7. The use of isotope scanning of the spleen in conjunction with 51Cr-labelled red blood cells has become an established technique in the evaluation of patients with hypersplenism. As far as we are aware the similar technique using labelled white blood cells to demonstrate splenic sequestration in a neutropenic patient has not been described. We report a case where this technique proved valuable in confirming the diagnosis and in predicting a favourable response to splenectomy.

Salivary fluids of Blaberus craniifer, a common pest species of cockroach, were found to produce leukocytolysis and hemagglutination reactions of human blood cells under in vitro conditions. Blood sera from these insects produced similar reactions, as well as the capacity to lyse human erythrocytes. The cockroach is known to regurgitate while feeding. These findings suggest the potential of the insect to induce adverse effects on human blood cells as a consequence of persons being bitten or having lesions that serve as skin sites for cockroach feeding.

Granulocyte-committed progenitor cells (colony-forming units, CFUc) in the blood of 10 patients with primary myelosclerosis and 2 patients with myelosclerosis following polycythaemia vera were assayed by the agar culture technique. A 43-year-old woman who developed thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura was treated successfully with high doses of prednisone and a splenectomy. Imprints from the cut surface of the spleen showed marked phagocytosis of all the cellular elements of the blood. This observation suggests that hypersplenism, in addition to vascular occlusion, may play a major role in the physiopathology of some cases of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
