BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Allogeneic blood components and plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs) are cornerstone therapies in modern medicine, setting standards for quality, safety and efficacy. While platelets are traditionally transfused to prevent or control bleeding, they also serve as reservoirs of bioactive molecules with regenerative, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and neuroprotective properties. This review examines how pooled human platelet lysates (HPLs) and platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (p-EVs) could be developed as therapeutic products, building on the principles e

Patients with beta-thalassemia major require lifelong and frequent red blood cell transfusions for survival, impacting their quality of life … duals with thalassemia major over six months All subjects were already receiving iron chelators and blood transfusions. They were given a daily oral dose of 10 mg/kg NAC for three months. After three months of treatment with NAC, the serum levels of ferritin and liver enzymes (SGOT and SGPT) did not show significant changes (p = 0.35, p = 0.352, and p = 0.686, resp …

INTRODUCTION: Collecting blood from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors from low risk populations is a key strategy for blood safety. Identifying such populations involves analysis of population and blood donor data to identify risk factors for transfusion transmissible infections (TTIs). There are no recent seroprevalence statistics for blood donors in Malawi. This study fills this gap by describing characteristics of blood donors, trend of annual prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis and factors associated with each TTI.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of blood donors' records in the

BACKGROUND: Remediation of physician learners is not infrequently discussed in the graduate medical education (GME) literature. However, none of this literature is specific to blood banking/transfusion medicine (BB/TM) fellows and their typical 1-year fellowship program. Identifying a fellow's deficiencies and establishing an effective remediation program during a time-limited BB/TM fellowship is challenging.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: GME literature on remediation of physician learners was reviewed. A group of current and former BB/TM fellowship directors convened virtually to discuss if and

Blood transfusion, while a life-saving intervention, carries inherent risks ranging from infectious complications to non-infectious hazards, such as transfusion-related acute lung injury, circulatory overload, and hemolytic reactions. While donor screening and pathogen inactivation technologies can significantly reduce infectious risks, preventing non-infectious complications remains challenging due to limited understanding of donor and recipient factors that govern these outcomes. To address this, genetically tractable murine models can be employed to elucidate key biological factors governin…

Blood transfusion is integral to modern medicine but carries significant immunological risks. This review outlines key immune-mediated complications, including acute hemolytic transfusion reactions from ABO incompatibility, and febrile nonhemolytic reactions caused by cytokines or antileukocyte antibodies. Other reactions include allergic responses, anaphylaxis (notably in IgA-deficient patients), and transfusion-related acute lung injury - the leading cause of transfusion-related mortality. Delayed hemolytic reactions, alloimmunization-induced platelet refractoriness, transfusion-associated g…

BACKGROUND: Spinal deformity surgery (SDS) is usually accompanied by significant intraoperative blood loss and transfusion, which is not without risk, as transfusions can lead to transfusion reactions, transmission of infections, and immunosuppression. Therefore, limiting unnecessary intraoperative blood transfusion (IBT) by accurately predicting transfusion requirements is an important goal.
METHODS: Include patients with spinal deformities who received SDS at 11 large medical centers in China from 2012 to 2022. A total of 162 cases were randomized into a training cohort (70%) and a testing …

To explore preoperative and operative risk factors for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion requirements during liver transplantation (LT) and up to 24 h afterwards. We evaluated the associations between risk factors and units of RBC transfused in 176 LT patients using a log-binomial regression model. Relative risk was adjusted for age, sex, and the model for end-stage liver disease score (MELD) (adjustment 1) and baseline hemoglobin concentration (adjustment 2). Forty-six patients (26.14%) did not receive transfusion. Grafts from cardiac-death donors were used in 32.61% and 31.54% of non-transfus

Anemia of prematurity affects the majority of preterm infants, particularly extremely low birthweight infants. Anemia of prematurity arises from both innate and iatrogenic causes and results in more than 80% of extremely preterm infants receiving red blood cell transfusions during the first month after birth. Multiple randomized controlled trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of using lower versus higher transfusion thresholds based on hemoglobin levels. These trials showed no difference in the primary outcome of neurodevelopmental impairment at 2 years of age between lower and higher

BACKGROUND: Dengue is still a recurrent challenge to the global population, without specific antiviral therapy. Clinical management strategies are aimed to mitigate the deaths. The use of blood products in dengue is recommended mainly in cases of bleeding.
CASE PRESENTATION: We prospectively collected data on Sri Lankan dengue cases in the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka from 2017, and selected ten severe cases where blood transfusions were involved in the management. The series comprises seven females and three males, with a median age of 36 years (range 12-53 years). All patients w…
