Postnatal development of carotid body glomus cell O2 sensitivity.

In mammals, the main sensors of arterial oxygen level are the carotid chemoreceptors, which exhibit low sensitivity to hypoxia at birth and become more sensitive over the first few days or weeks of life. This postnatal increase in hypoxia sensitivity of the arterial chemoreceptors, termed "resetting", remains poorly understood. In the carotid body, hypoxia is transduced by glomus cells, which are secretory sensory neurons that respond to hypoxia at higher P(O2) levels than non-chemoreceptor cell types. Maturation or resetting of carotid body O2 sensitivity potentially involves numerous aspects

Surgical management of the neck in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

If the nodes are involved, survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is considerably reduced. Surgery remains the treatment of choice and, to define its role, we have reviewed 82 consecutive cases. Sixty-two cases (76%) were T1-2, and 46 patients (56%) had involved nodes. The cervical region II was the most often involved (n=26). Occult nodal metastases were present in 12 cases. The extent of nodal spread and prognosis varies according to whether the body or the base of the tongue is involved. Lesions of the base with involved node should be treated by a selective postero

Outcomes after inguinal hernia repair: how strong is the evidence for minimally invasive versus open repair?

PURPOSE: It remains controversial whether minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is superior to open surgery for inguinal hernia repair. MIS is growing in popularity, but open surgery remains more common. Consensus remains elusive even though numerous studies have been published about the topic. A new method for sensitivity analysis, the Robustness of Inferences to Replacement (RIR), can summarize the complex body of literature and evaluate the strength of the published findings to better support surgical decision-making. This study applied the RIR to the available evidence about this topic. METHOD

Regrowth of upper eyelid eyelashes after making a surgical incision on the upper eyelid in a case of severe alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata can affect only the scalp (alopecia totalis) or whole body (alopecia universalis). The authors report a case of eyelash regrowth induced by a minor surgical procedure in a 44-year-old Caucasian man with alopecia universalis. The mechanism of the regrowth of eyelashes after a surgical procedure remains unanswered and further studies may help elucidate this phenomenon.

Anorexia nervosa and the hypothalamus.

A new name, "puberal starvation-amenorrhea", is proposed as more descriptive of the syndrome and less committal concerning its etiology. Though the etiology remains uncertain, a growing body of evidence--deranged hormonal secretory patterns, deficient thermal and water regulation, and other physiologic abnormalities--indicates that a specific hypothalamic dysfunction is responsible for this bizarre, sometimes lethal disease.

Association of Age at Menopause With Lean Body Mass and Sarcopenia Risk in Postmenopausal Korean Women.

AIM: To evaluate whether menopause at or before 45 years of age is associated with lower lean body mass and a higher risk of sarcopenia in postmenopausal Korean women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008-2011. Postmenopausal women aged 40 years or older who underwent whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were included. Lean body mass was defined as fat-free soft tissue mass excluding bone mineral content. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine total lean body mass, and logistic regression was us

Estimated Acquisition Cost Differences between Fixed and Simulated Body Weight-Based Nivolumab Dosing Using Real-World Claims Data in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Nivolumab was initially approved with body weight-based dosing; however, fixed-dose regimens were later adopted based on pharmacokinetic evidence supporting comparable benefit-risk profiles. Nevertheless, the acquisition cost impact of fixed dosing relative to a body weight-based counterfactual remains unclear in Japanese real-world data. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to estimate drug acquisition cost differences at the index administration by comparing observed fixed-dose quantities with a simulated body weight-based counterfactual using nationwide Japanese claims dat

[Influence of aging on vitamin D metabolism].

Aging is associated both with calcium deficiency, due to low dietary intake and decreased intestinal absorption, and with vitamin D deficiency, secondary to depletion of body stores resulting from inadequate exposure to sunlight. Hepatic hydroxylation of vitamin D remains normal in elderly individuals. Recent data suggest that renal hydroxylation of vitamin D, previously believed to decrease with advancing age, also remains virtually normal even when creatinine clearance declines, as is very often the case in elderly patients. The combined deficiency in calcium and vitamin D stimulates the sec

Multiple loose bodies in rheumatoid arthritis.

Intra-articular loose bodies are usually secondary to osteochondral fractures, osteochondritis dissecans, synovial osteochondromatosis, and degenerative arthritis. The authors report four patients with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis and multiple loose bodies in a variety of joints. All patients have remained active despite their disease, suggesting that the loose body production was secondary to trauma of continued activity superimposed on joints containing pannus and eroded cartilage.

Gravel gut: small bowel perforation due to a blunt ingested foreign body.

The ingestion of foreign bodies remains a common occurrence in children. Most ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously, although up to 1% will result in intestinal perforation. Specific foreign bodies such as sharp, pointed, or corrosive objects have been typically associated with perforation. The initial diagnosis of foreign body ingestion may be difficult in the absence of a witness, and the presentation of perforation in this situation difficult to distinguish from other causes of an acute abdomen. We report a case of ileal perforation due to a blunt ingested foreign body in a child in wh

Chandelier-assisted scleral buckling in an eye with longstanding inert foreign body with fresh rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) present in varied manners which in turn necessitate their removal in majority of the cases. A stone foreign body can remain inert inside the eye for years. Retinal detachment in eyes following penetrating trauma with an IOFB is common, but a combination of fresh rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in an eye with a longstanding inert stone foreign body is extremely rare. We report a case of a 50-year-old male with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with a longstanding stone foreign body, where we managed such a scenario with a chandelier-assisted, sutureless, scl

Exploring the interplay of karyotype, hormones, sexuality, and body image perception in individuals with Turner syndrome.

PURPOSE: Most patients with Turner Syndrome (TS) require Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Androgen levels could be compromised due to both ovarian insufficiency and HRT. Despite this, the association between androgen deficiency, sexual health, and body image perception remains underexplored in these patients. This study aimed to assess hormone levels, sexual function, and body image perception in women with TS, categorized by karyotype and HRT regimen. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 29 patients with TS was performed. Clinical, hormonal, and ultrasonographic pelvic parameters were ev

Body Image: A Bridge Between Depression and Quality of Life in Women With Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatments often result in visible bodily changes and emotional distress, affecting self-perception, mood, and overall well-being. Body image, particularly in women with breast cancer, plays a key role in shaping psychological adjustment and quality of life. However, its potential mediating role between depression and quality of life in cancer populations remains underexplored. AIMS: This cross-sectional study investigated whether body image statistically mediates the relationship between depression and quality of life in female patients with cancer and whether this

The Effect of Body Checking Policy Changes on Concussion Incidence in Canadian Male Youth Ice Hockey Players: A Critically Appraised Topic.

Clinical Scenario: Current studies have identified body checking as the most common cause of sports-related concussion in ice hockey across all divisions and levels. As a result, many hockey organizations, particularly in youth sports, have implemented rules making body checking to the head, face, and/or neck illegal. Such a rule, in Canada, makes age 13 the first age in which individuals can engage in body checking. Despite these changes, effectiveness of their implementation on the incidence of concussion in Canadian male youth ice hockey players remains unclear. Clinical Question: What is t

Obesity and hypomagnesemia.

BACKGROUND: Whether low serum magnesium is an epiphenomenon related with obesity or, whether obesity per se is cause of hypomagnesemia, remains to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between body weight status and hypomagnesemia in apparently healthy subjects. METHODS: A total of 681 healthy individuals aged 30 to 65years were enrolled in A cross-sectional study. Extreme exercise, chronic diarrhea, alcohol intake, use of diuretics, smoking, oral magnesium supplementation, diabetes, malnutrition, hypertension, liver disease, thyroid disorders, and renal damage were exclusion

What does the "perfect man" look like? An exploratory Q-methodology study on male appearance ideals among Chinese college students.

Appearance ideals play a crucial role in shaping individuals' body image, including body image disturbances. Amidst the influences of modernization and Westernization in contemporary China, Chinese men have reported a rise in body image disturbances. However, there remains a limited empirical understanding of appearance ideals specific to Chinese men. To fill this gap, the present study employed Q-methodology, a mixed-method approach particularly useful for investigating subjectivity, to explore the perceptions of male appearance ideals among a sample of Chinese college students. A Q-set of 45

Reactive Mesothelial Cells in the Lymphatic Network of the Serous Membrane in Prolonged Body Fluid Retention: An Autopsy Case Report.

Reactive mesothelial cells (RMCs) are of interest for differentiating mesothelioma from benign conditions and have been discussed in cytology and biopsy; however, their behavior in the body remains poorly understood. In this study, we report an autopsy case of an older woman with a long-standing pleural effusion due to cardiac disease, providing insights into the relationship between body cavities, and lymphatic vessels (LVs), mesothelial cells (MCs), and endothelial cells. Cytological examination of pleural effusion revealed RMCs with mild atypia, multinucleation, and intercellular phagocytos…

The Neuroanatomical Basis of the 5-HT Syndrome and Harmalineinduced Tremor.

The 5-HT syndrome in rats is composed of head weaving, body shaking, forepaw treading, flat body posture, hindlimb abduction, and Straub tail. The importance of the brainstem and spinal cord for the syndrome is underlined by findings of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT)-induced denervation supersensitivity in response to 5-HT-stimulant drugs. For head weaving and Straub tail, supersensitivity occurred when the neurotoxin was injected into the cisterna magna or spinal cord, for forepaw treading in cisterna magna, and for hindlimb abduction in the spinal cord. Although 5,7- DHT-related body shak

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum by an unusual foreign body: A case report and a review of literature.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is rare, particularly by foreign body. High index of suspicion and thorough intraoperative assessment is needed in patients undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis, specifically when appendix appears normal. ABSTRACT: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. While often asymptomatic, it can present with several complications. Perforation due to foreign body ingestion is rare but can have severe consequences if late diagnosis occurs. A 13-year-old male, initially suspected of acu
