Weight-inclusive intuitive eating course associated with reductions in disordered eating in adults: a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Many employee health promotion programs encourage lifestyle changes such as eating more fruits and vegetables or getting more physical activity. Most of these programs operate from a weight-normative lens, meaning they encourage such changes with the primary goal of weight change (typically weight loss). However, research indicates that weight-inclusive programs - programs that focus on health behaviors alone, regardless of weight change - may be just as effective at promoting better health and also feel less stigmatizing for participants. The purpose of this study was to test th

Peculiarities of sexual development and reproductive function in young women with childhood onset weight problems.

The risks of reproductive problems are higher in underweight and overweight or obese women, especially in case of rapid weight gain or loss. But evidence is inconsistent especially in relation to the effect of age of body weight changes. The aim of the study was detection of peculiarities of sexual development and reproductive function in underweight and overweight/obese females with childhood thinness or childhood obesity. 103 young females (48 - with low BMI, 55 - with high BMI) with different reproductive problems were examined prospectively. In all investigated patients full clinical exami…

Effect of body weight support on muscle activation during walking on a lower body positive pressure treadmill.

Following lower limb injury, some patients are not able to walk at full weight bearing and may require body weight support for ambulation during the early stages of rehabilitation. The aim of the present study was to investigate how various degrees of reduced effective body weight in a Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill (LBPPT), affects muscle activation levels during walking. Twelve healthy participants were instructed to walk at 2.5 km/h and 3.6 km/h on a LBPPT that provided a reduced effective body weight equivalent to 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% of their individual body mass. The effect of 12-month postoperative weight change on outcomes following midurethral sling for stress urinary incontinence: a secondary analysis of the ESTEEM and TOMUS randomized trials.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Prior studies demonstrate mixed results on the impact of obesity on the success of midurethral slings (MUS), with little known about how postoperative weight change affects outcomes. We aimed to examine the effect of postoperative weight change on outcomes 12 months after MUS for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). METHODS: This secondary analysis utilized data from two multicenter randomized trials of women undergoing MUS placement. Subjects were categorized into cohorts based on change in body weight at 12 months postoperatively: weight gain (≥5% increase); weigh

Central circuits in control of energy expenditure: connecting energy and temperature homeostasis.

Energy expenditure (EE) is the dynamic physiological process that balances energy intake to maintain body weight and body temperature. Environmental changes induce EE adaptations that limit fluctuations in body weight or body temperature by balancing between body temperature defense and energy conservation. The central nervous system (CNS) orchestrates these adaptations by integrating multiple external and internal cues to coordinate thermogenesis together with other behavioral and metabolic processes. Key hypothalamic and brainstem nuclei form a distributed network that modulates autonomic ou

Contribution of maternal oxygenic state to the effects of chronic postnatal hypoxia on mouse body and brain development.

1-2% of live births are to very low birth weight, premature infants that often show a developmental trajectory plagued with neurological sequelae including ventriculomegaly and significant decreases in cortical volume. We are able to recapitulate these sequelae using a mouse model of hypoxia where early postnatal pups are exposed to chronic hypoxia for one week. However, because the timing of hypoxic exposure occurs so early in development, dams and pups are housed together in the hypoxic chamber, and therefore, dams are also subjected to the same hypoxic conditions as the pups. To understand

Functional tooth unit, periodontal status, and association with weight change in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Literature reports that having fewer teeth is associated with reduced chewing capacity, which in turn may lead to weight changes due to diminished oral functionality. This study aims to assess the association between functional tooth units (FTU) and periodontal status and weight change among older adults participating in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study (Health ABC). METHODS: This study followed individuals with complete data on weight at years 2 and 6 of Health ABC. Variables included the number of teeth, FTU, and periodontal status, which were considered the primary

Homovanillic acid improves anxiety by regulating F4/80+ microglia/macrophage in adult mice with neonatal cardiac injury.

The heart-brain axis is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality following ischemic injury. Pathological and psychological changes in the heart can lead to anxiety, cognitive impairment, and brain injury. Cardiac injury releases a substantial number of metabolites into the peripheral circulation, which exacerbates brain damage and dysfunction. Homovanillic acid (HVA), a metabolite of dopamine (DA), plays a crucial role in behavioral symptoms. However, there are limited studies examining the effects of cardiac metabolites released from an injured heart on behavioral symptoms in huma

High Hydrostatic Pressure Extract of Ginger Exerts Antistress Effects in Immobilization-Stressed Rats.

Stress contributes to physiological changes such as weight loss and hormonal imbalances. The aim of the present study was to investigate antistress effects of high hydrostatic pressure extract of ginger (HPG) in immobilization-stressed rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 24) were divided into three groups as follows: control (C), immobilization stress (2 h daily, for 2 weeks) (S), and immobilization stress (2 h daily, for 2 weeks) plus oral administration of HPG (150 mg/kg body weight/day) (S+G). Immobilization stress reduced the body weight gain and thymus weight by 50.2% and 31.3%, respectiv

Maternal feed restriction during pregnancy in Wistar rats: Evaluation of offspring using classical and immunoteratology protocols.

Studies have revealed that impairment of the pregnant body weight reduces the fetal body weight and causes minor changes in skeletal development. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of maternal feed restriction during pregnancy in offspring immune system development. Pregnant Wistar rats were distributed into 5 groups: 1 control in which dams received food ad libitum and 4 experimental groups in which dams were fed restricted amounts of rodent ration (16, 12, 9, or 6 g/rat/day) from the 6th to 17th gestation day. Teratogenicity was assessed using classical teratological eval

Hydration abnormalities in Nigerian patients on chronic hemodialysis.

The state of hydration affects the outcomes of chronic dialysis. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) provides estimates of body water (V), extracellular volume (ECFV), and fat-free mass (FFM) that allow characterization of hydration. We compared single-frequency BIA measurements before and after 14 hemodialysis sessions in 10 Nigerian patients (6 men, 4 women; 44+/-7 years old) with clinical evaluation (weight removed during dialysis, presence of edema) and with estimates of body water obtained by the Watson, Chertow, and Chumlea anthropometric formulas. Predialysis and postdialysis values

Effect of long-term vagal stimulation on food intake and body weight during diet induced obesity in rats.

Regulation of food intake and body weight is accomplished by several mechanisms. CNS receives information from periphery and modifies food intake mainly by vagal nerves that provide the major neuroanatomical link between gastrointestinal sites stimulated during food intake and CNS sites that control feeding behavior and metabolism. Gastric mechanoreceptors and jejunal chemoreceptors activated by food or vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), which mimic the physiological input, suppress feeding within short-term regulation. Our research was aimed on determination the role of electrical VNS in long-ter

Weight loss and disease progression in HIV infection.

Weight loss and malnutrition continue to be important issues that clinicians face when treating patients with HIV infection. In addition to specific clinical consequences, weight loss in these patients is linked to a greater risk of death and opportunistic complications. A loss of as little as 5% to 1-% of baseline body weight can be associated with a risk of death that is 2.5 times that seen in patients with HIV infection who do not lose weight. Furthermore, weight loss in patients with HIV infection can increase the risk of individual opportunistic infections by as much as 61% to 176%. Futur
