Plasma calcium, phosphorus and magnesium concentrations were determined in ewes and their single and twin lambs from birth for 120 days in Merino, Dohne Merino and South African Mutton Merino sheep. Mineral concentrations as well as the plasma calcium: phosphorus ratio were compared between breeds. Throughout the experimental period, plasma calcium and phosphorus concentrations were higher in both single and twin lambs than in the ewes of all 3 breeds. No breed differences in plasma calcium concentrations were found. Animals of the S.A. Mutton Merino breed had significantly higher (P less than

384 adolescents in Chiavenna schools were examined in a study of the considerable incidence of tibia vara, seen as a first step towards the patterns of varizing arthrosic deformation of the knee in adults of the same zone; at the same time indications on prophylactic-preventive measures in the field of scholastic and sport medicine were given.

Defects in craniofacial tissues, resulting from trauma, congenital abnormalities, oncologic resection or progressive deforming diseases, may result in aesthetic deformity, pain and reduced function. Restoring the structure, function and aesthetics of craniofacial tissues represents a substantial clinical problem in need of new solutions. More biologically-interactive biomaterials could potentially improve the treatment of craniofacial defects, and an understanding of developmental processes may help identify strategies and materials that can be used in tissue engineering. One such strategy tha

Growth retardation, delayed puberty, decreased bone mass, altered bone architecture, hypovitaminosis D and skeletal muscle mass deficits are common in children with inflammatory bowel diseases. The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America sponsored a multidisciplinary workshop on the subject of Bone and Skeletal Growth in Pediatric IBD, held in New York City in November 2011. The topic of the workshop was a key recommendation of the Foundation's Pediatric Challenges meeting in 2005. The Litwin Foundation provided a generous grant to support this crucial research and workshop through the CCFA.

The past decade has seen significant advances in our understanding of skeletal homeostasis and the mechanisms that mediate the loss of bone integrity in disease. Recent breakthroughs have arisen mainly from identifying disease-causing mutations and modeling human bone disease in rodents, in essence, highlighting the integrative nature of skeletal physiology. It has become increasingly clear that bone cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes, communicate and regulate the fate of each other through RANK/RANKL/OPG, liver X receptors (LXRs), EphirinB2-EphB4 signaling, sphingolipids, and oth

Skeletal growth is a dynamic process. A knowledge of the structure and function of the normal growth plate is essential in order to understand the pathophysiology of abnormal skeletal growth in various diseases. In this well-illustrated article, the authors provide a radiographic classification of abnormal growth plates and discuss mechanisms that lead to growth plate abnormalities.

Trevor's disease, also known as dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (DEH), is a rare developmental bone dysplasia, characterized by benign osteocartilaginous overgrowth. The lesion arises from an epiphysis. Its localization may be different, and it mostly occurs unilateral. In this report, we present a 40 years old woman suffering from Trevor's disease with unusual localization at the hand. Because of significant symptoms surgical excision was chosen.

The nail-patella syndrome (NPS), also known as hereditary onychoosteodysplasia (HOOD), is a hereditary disorder with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance involving nails, bones and other tissues. It is characterized by onchodysplasia of the finger nails (most prominent on the thumb and index finger) and V-shaped lunulae. Extraosseous manifestations include ocular (glaucoma, microcornea) and renal involvement (proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome). A variety of skeletal anomalies can be observed. We report a 59 year old male with NPS. In addition to dysplastic patellae and elbow joints and the

A routine ophthalmologic examination supplemented by color fundus photography and, in 2 cases, by fluorescein angiography was performed in 8 patients with PLO-SL (= polycystic lipomembranous dysplasia with sclerosing leukoencephalopathy). Five patients showed some degree of retinal nerve fiber defect. The relation of the changes in ocular fundi to the pathological findings of PLO-SL are discussed.

The Authors report a case of frontonasal dysplasia, a rare congenital syndrome, accompanied by multiple cranial synostosis. According to Cohen, frontonasal dysplasia associated with craniosynostosis may be considered as a separate syndrome and Cohen himself has described its occurrence in members of two families as "Craniofrontonasal Dysplasia". The Authors describe a sporadical case presenting various minor abnormality reported by Cohen, in addition to the hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, demonstrated by the Cranial Ultrasonography and by the NMR study of the brain.

An autosomal dominant hereditary bone dysplasia was observed in three members of a Sardinian family living in Germany--the father and two sons. The guiding clinical symptom is thickening of the wrist proximal to the styloid process of the ulna. The radiologically recognizable changes--non-calcified cartilaginous islands protruding like cones into the metaphysis--begin with the onset of puberty and are not always associated with pain. Varying degrees of thickening and bowing of the relatively poorly mineralized metaphyseal region, particularly of the distal ulna, occur at the end of skeletal de

Fucosidosis is an uncommonly recognized lysosomal storage disease which presents with psychomotor deterioration and progressing in some cases to death. The roentgenographic findings in five boys from three families are described. Skeletal abnormalities of a dysostosis multiplex nature are present and though not diagnostic should direct the clinician to perform appropriate biochemical and tissue assay studies to establish the diagnosis.

The roentgenographic and clinical findings are described in a mother and daughter with the Kniest syndrome associated with urinary keratan sulfate excretion. Osteoporosis, kyphoscoliosis, vertebral irregularity, pelvic deformity, flat femoral heads and enlargement of the ends of the long bones were the main roentgen findings. Irregularity of ossification on both sides of the growth plate was observed in the daughter, and marked degenerative changes were superimposed on several of the mother's abnormal joints. Abnormal mucopolysacchariduria, observed in both patients, and cataracts, fusion of t

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common, autosomal dominant tumor-predisposition disorder that arises secondary to mutations in the tumor suppressor gene NF1. Cephalometry is an inexpensive, readily available and non-invasive technique that is under-utilized in studying the NF1 craniofacial phenotype. An analysis of NF1 cephalometry was first published by Heervä et al. in 2011. We expand here on that first investigation with a larger cohort of adult and pediatric patients affected with NF1 and sought objective insight into the NF1 facies, said to feature hypertelorism and a broa

A longitudinal epiphyseal bracket (LEB) is a defect of the tubular bones and has been primarily described in the hands and feet, especially the proximal phalanges, metacarpals, and metatarsals. The LEB results from a defective C-shaped secondary ossification center that brackets the diaphysis and metaphysis, causing restricted longitudinal growth in these bones with resultant shortening and angular deformities. Deformities associated with metatarsal epiphyseal bracket include a short, broad metatarsal and medial deviation of the metatarsophalangeal joint (hallux varus deformity). Excision of t
