BackgroundChronic low back pain due to disc degeneration represents a major social and economic burden worldwide. The current standard of care is limited to symptomatic relief and no current approved therapy promotes disc regeneration. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are easily accessible and well characterized. These MSCs are multipotent and exhibit great tissue regenerative potential including bone, cartilage, and fibrous tissue regeneration. The use of this cell-based biologic for treating protruding disc herniation and/or intervertebral disc degeneration is a promising th

A series of 65 patients in whom bone metastasis was the earliest sign of tumour is examined. The diagnostic aspects of the bone metastasis from laboratory examination to radiology, from scintigraphy to bone marrow biopsy are analysed as is the problem of locating the primary tumours that remain of unknown site. The prognosis is poor for all such patients. The possibility of altering the course of the disease and the quality of the patient's life depends on the site and type of the primary neoplasm concerned. Effective systemic palliative treatment is currently only available for plasmacytomas

Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPNs) are a heterogeneous group of hematologic malignancies characterized by dysplastic and myeloproliferative overlapping features in the bone marrow and blood. The occurrence of the disease is related to age, prior history of MPN or MDS, and recent cytotoxic or growth factor therapy, but it rarely develops after acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We report a rare case of a patient diagnosed with AML with t(8; 21)(q22; q22) who received systematic chemotherapy. After 4 years of follow-up, MDS/MPN-unclassifiable occurred without signs of primary AML

A 70-year-old male was referred to our hospital for marked thrombocytosis without anemia. The patient simultaneously presented with an MPL W515L mutation, one of the major driver mutations in essential thrombocythemia (ET), and deletion of 5q, a characteristic cytogenetic abnormality in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Bone marrow examination showed a combination of both mature hyperlobulated megakaryocytes, as found in ET, and small hypolobulated megakaryocytes, typically found in MDS with del(5q). The present case is consistent with the recently proposed category of myeloid neoplasms with iso

Several neoplasms including hematological malignancies occurring in very few patients with sickle cell syndromes have been reported in literature, particularly as survival among these patients and diagnostic accuracy have continued to improve. Multiple myeloma (MM) has rarely been reported in patients with hemoglobin (Hb) S + C. We report a 65-year-old retired banker who was recently diagnosed with HbS + C. This patient developed MM with markedly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mild anemia, 80% bone marrow plasmacytosis, and elevated serum immunoglobulin A level, while plain X-ray of

Fanconi's anemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by congenital malformation, bone marrow failure and genomic instability, with a predisposition to develop malignancies, especially the leukemias and upper aerodigestive tract tumors. Due to inherent characteristics to this syndrome, the treatment of such neoplasms is particularly difficult. In this paper we report the case of a 24-year-old woman with Fanconi's anemia who developed a squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx; she had none of the traditional risk factors, such as smoking and alcohol abuse. We also briefly rev

The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of hematopoietic neoplasms characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis and a high risk of transformation in acute leukemia. Pathogenesis and clinical course of these disorders are heterogenous. MDS is unusual in childhood, and differential diagnosis is specially broad in this age group. Allogenic bone marrow transplantation is the treatment of choice. Therapy with hematopoietic growth factors can overcome the maturation defect of the malignant clone in some instances. Multicenter studies are necessary to accumulate sufficient data on pathogenesis,

Trisomy 14 was demonstrated on four occasions over a 2-year period in the bone marrow cells of a 63-year-old patient with refractory anemia with excess of blasts in transformation (RAEB-t). Trisomy 14 as the sole karyotype abnormality has been documented in only six malignancies, namely, in two cases of acute leukemias, one Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloid leukemia, one pancytopenia, and in two colonic polyps. In hematologic neoplasms, this rare primary change preferentially occurs in elderly adults and seems exclusively associated with the myeloid cell lineage.

Herein, we describe the clinicopathologic and genetic characteristics of the first report of simultaneous bone marrow involvement by classical hairy cell leukemia (HCL) and leukemic non-nodal variant of mantle cell lymphoma (L-NN-MCL) with t(11;14)(q13;q32) with BRAF mutation and deletion of TP53. A 40-year-old asymptomatic man was investigated for incidental neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Flow cytometry showed two distinct monotypic B-cell populations: one expressed CD19 (bright), CD20 (bright), FMC7, CD103, CD25, CD11c, CD123, and IgD (bright) and showed kappa light chain restriction (bri

Dickkopf-3 (Dkk3) has been proposed as tumour suppressor gene and a marker for tumour blood vessels. We analysed the expression and function of Dkk3 in platelets and megakaryocytes from healthy controls and patients with BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Dkk3 protein and gene expression in platelets was compared with endothelial and other blood cell populations by ELISA, real-time PCR, and immunofluorescence. Moreover, megakaryocytes were isolated from bone marrow aspirates by CD61 microbeads. Immunohistochemical studies of Dkk3 expression were performed in essential thromb

Solitary plasmacytoma is a rare form of plasma cell neoplasm defined by local neoplastic accumulation of monoclonal plasma cells in the absence of systemic proliferative plasma cell disease. In this case report, a 65-year-old female with remote past medical history of papillary thyroid cancer presented with shoulder pain and radiographs showing an aggressive osteolytic lesion presumed to represent an osseous metastasis. The subsequent MRI and CT examinations demonstrated diffuse intralesional macroscopic fat without a nonlipogenic soft tissue component or focal, nodular mass-like enhancement.

Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) refers to haematopoietic proliferation outside the bone marrow, most often arising as a compensatory response to ineffective marrow function in chronic anaemias and myeloid neoplasms, particularly myelofibrosis and other myeloproliferative neoplasms. While the liver and spleen are typical sites, renal involvement remains particularly uncommon and may mimic infiltrative malignancy or infection on cross-sectional imaging. We report a 35-year-old woman with biopsy-proven grade 2 myelofibrosis who presented with constitutional symptoms, namely asthenia, progress

Interferon α (IFNα) is used clinically to restore polyclonal hematopoiesis in patients with the myeloproliferative neoplasms polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia and to improve chemosensitivity in chronic myeloid leukemia patients. However, the mechanisms by which IFNα affects disease-initiating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) remain poorly understood. Although IFNα has been found to transiently impair quiescence of murine hematopoietic stem cells, its effects on human HSPCs have not been studied in vivo. Here, we compared bone marrow serially obtained from patients

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a rare neurological condition characterized by muscle weakness that worsens after use. Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs) are disorders due to stem-cell hyperplasia characterized by an increased peripheral blood cell count, overactive bone marrow, and proliferation of mature hematopoietic cells. MPNs may be Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-positive or Negative .A systematic review of case reports was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Google scholar to identify case reports in which there is an association between MG and MPN and know whether MG can be considered

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase gene fusions (MLN-TK) represent rare hematological malignancies driven by pathological fusion genes involving tyrosine kinase genes. Among these, rearrangements of the PDGFRB gene, particularly the ETV6::PDGFRB rearrangement, are frequently observed as pathogenic mutations. Conversely, instances of the MPRIP::PDGFRB fusion gene are rarely documented. In this case report, we present a 32-year-old previously healthy Thai male who presented to the hospital with constitutional symptoms and marked splenomegaly. His complete blood coun

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a proliferation of hematopoietic tissue outside of the bone marrow medullary space. It is a pathophysiologic response, more often associated with either a benign reactive hematological disease or a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). Identification of EMH in adults is always pathologic. It is highly unlikely for a myeloproliferative neoplasm to present with inguinal lymphadenopathy. An unusual and complex case can be precisely diagnosed via a multidisciplinary approach involving experts from various modalities of laboratory. In this regard, the

An aberrant growth of plasma cells in the bone marrow characterizes the hematological neoplasm known as multiple myeloma, which is typically accompanied by increased bone pain and skeletal-related events such as pathological fractures and/or spinal cord compression. Changes in the bone marrow microenvironment brought on by increased osteoclastic activity and/or decreased osteoblastic activity as a result of myeloma bone disease have a detrimental effect on quality of life. Bone-modifying medications such as bisphosphonates or denosumab are used to treat myeloma bone disease. These substances c

BACKGROUND: Aggressive natural killer cell leukemia/lymphoma (ANKL) is a rare and highly aggressive NK cell neoplasm with a short clinical course and poor prognosis and is often misdiagnosed and confused with NK/T cell lymphoma (NKTL), which has a very different prognosis. Here, we present a case with nasal and bone marrow involvement, provide a literature review and make a differential diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old male presented nasal congestion pharyngalgia, palatal perforation, high fever and multiorgan dysfunction. Our diagnosis primarily relied on clinical features, the mo
