Are Different Aged Youth Skiers and Snowboarders Experiencing Different Injury Characteristics?

INTRODUCTION: Skiing and snowboarding are popular winter sports with significant youth participation and inherent potential for injury. We investigated the relationship between age and injury characteristics exhibited by youth skiers and snowboarders. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we investigated injury characteristics among youth skiers and snowboarders at a ski resort, examining the association between age and injury type. We compared injury characteristics among young children (aged 3-6 y), school-aged children (aged 7-14 y), and older adolescents (aged 15-17 y) using χ2, and exa

Repair of critical diaphyseal defects of lower limbs by 3D printed porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds without additional bone grafting: a prospective clinical study.

The repair of critical diaphyseal defects of lower weight-bearing limbs is an intractable problem in clinical practice. From December 2017, we prospectively applied 3D printed porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds to reconstruct this kind of bone defect. All patients experienced a two-stage surgical process, including thorough debridement and scaffold implantation. With an average follow-up of 23.0 months, ten patients with 11 parts of bone defects were enrolled in this study. The case series included three females and seven males, their defect reasons included seven parts of osteomyelitis and four parts o

Physical and occupational therapist rehabilitation of lower extremity fractures in veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders.

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: The risk of lower extremity (LE) fractures in persons with spinal cord injury or disorders (SCI/D) is double that of the able-bodied population. LE fractures are the most common fracture location in SCI/D. Physical therapists (PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) play an important role in rehabilitating LE fractures in Veterans with SCI/D. This paper describes their role in assisting persons with SCI/D and LE fractures to return to previous function and levels of participation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional semi-structured interviews were conducted by telephone. Setting: VA SCI

Soft-plastic brace for lower limb fractures in patients with spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study at a rehabilitation center. OBJECTIVES: Patients with spinal cord injury, even if they are wheelchair users, sometimes suffer from fractures of the lower limb bones. As their bones are too weak to have surgery, and because a precise reduction is not required for restoration, such patients are often indicated for conservative treatment. This case series study investigated the use of a hinged, soft-plastic brace as a conservative approach to treating fractures of the lower extremities of patients with spinal cord injury. SETTING: National Rehabilitation Center

Football injuries in children and adolescent players: are there clues for prevention?

Football (soccer) is the world's most popular sport with most players being younger than 18 years. Playing football can induce beneficial health effects, but there is also a high risk of injury. Therefore, it is necessary to implement measures for preventing injuries. The present review analyzes and summarizes published scientific information on the incidence and characteristics of football injuries in children and adolescent players to arrive at sound conclusions and valid considerations for the development of injury-prevention programs. A literature search was conducted up to November 2012.

Traumatic lower limb fractures following complete spinal cord injury.

Patients with complete spinal cord injury experience a rapid bone mineral density loss that places them at an increased risk of lower limb fracture following trivial injury. We aimed to establish if spinal cord injured patients treated at our unit have an increased incidence of lower limb fracture, and if so to identify a cohort of patients who may benefit from prophylactic treatment to preserve bone mineral density. We reviewed 158 patients treated between January 1994 and July 2002. There was a significantly increased incidence of lower limb fracture in patients with complete spinal cord inj

"Myelodysplasia," myeloneuropathy, and copper deficiency.

We describe a patient with a suspected myelodysplastic syndrome that developed in association with a neurologic disorder resembling subacute combined degeneration but without vitamin B12 deficiency. Ultimately, the hematologic manifestations and the neurologic syndrome were linked to severe copper deficiency. Prompt and complete reversal of the hematologic abnormalities occurred with copper replacement. Serum copper determination should be included in the work-up of patients with anemia and leukopenia of unclear etiology who have associated myeloneuropathy. The hematologic picture can resemble

A genome-wide association study of limb bone length using a Large White × Minzhu intercross population.

BACKGROUND: In pig, limb bone length influences ham yield and body height to a great extent and has important economic implications for pig industry. In this study, an intercross population was constructed between the indigenous Chinese Minzhu pig breed and the western commercial Large White pig breed to examine the genetic basis for variation in limb bone length. The aim of this study was to detect potential genetic variants associated with porcine limb bone length. METHODS: A total of 571 F2 individuals from a Large White and Minzhu intercross population were genotyped using the Illumina Po

Megaprosthesis of the knee in tumor and revision surgery.

The introduction of multidisciplinary approach with chemo and radiotherapy, the advances in surgical and the improvements of diagnostic techniques allowed limb salvage surgery in most cases of bone sarcomas instead of amputation. Modular megaprostheses are the most common method of reconstruction after segmental resection of the long bones in the extremities for their availability, immediate fixation, early weight bearing, good function. Despite the advances in materials and implant designs, these systems have an high incidence of complications. Aim of this study was to report the experience o

Metatarsal Lengthening With Monolateral External Fixator Using Intramedullary Kirschner Wire in Brachymetatarsia Surgery.

Brachymetatarsia is characterized by the parabola formed through the articulation of the metatarsophalangeal joints of the toes. It is defined as the termination of one or more metatarsals at least 5 mm proximal to this parabola, most commonly affecting the fourth metatarsal. Surgical interventions for brachymetatarsia include osteotomy followed by either acute distraction with grafting or gradual lengthening via distraction osteogenesis. In limb-lengthening procedures involving long bones of the lower extremity, an external fixator in conjunction with an intramedullary nail is commonly used.
