[Brain abscess secondary to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, case report (author's transl)].

A case of brain abscess in the right parietal lobe secondary to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation of the right lung is presented. A 27-year-old man was admitted for headache and left homonymous hemianopsia. CAG, VAG and brain scan detected brain abscess of the right parietal lobe which was successfully removed surgically. He had been noted to have generalized cyanosis and club finger which corresponded to polycytemia and hypercapnia on examination. Subsequently pulmonary arteriovenous malformation was found in the right lower lobe of the lung which was also successfully excised by thoracic …

Brain Abscess Causes Brain Damage With Long-Lasting Focal Cerebral Hypoactivity that Correlates With Abscess Size: A Cross-Sectional 18 F-Fluoro-Deoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bacterial brain abscesses may have long-term clinical consequences, eg, mental fatigue or epilepsy, but long-term structural consequences to the brain remain underexplored. We asked if brain abscesses damage brain activity long term, if the extent of such damage depends on the size of the abscess, and if the abscess capsule, which is often left in place during neurosurgery, remains a site of inflammation, which could explain long-lasting symptoms in patients with brain abscess. METHODS: 2-[ 18 F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomogra…

Brain Abscess as the Initial Manifestation of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia in a Child.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscess secondary to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation is rare in children and may be the first manifestation of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, imaging examinations, and diagnostic process of a child with brain abscess associated with pulmonary arteriovenous malformation and HHT. RESULTS: A 12-year-old boy presented with fever, headache, and limb weakness. Brain abscess was diagnosed, and antimicrobial therapy was initiated. Laboratory testing revealed fungal infection and …

Dermoid Cyst Causing Neonatal Brain Abscesses: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Brain abscess is a rare yet severe complication of neonatal meningitis, occurring in approximately 10% of neonates with this infection. This report details a case of neonatal brain abscess originating from a dermoid cyst. Although dermoid cysts are benign, they can rupture or become infected, leading to central nervous system (CNS) complications such as brain abscesses. Clinical manifestations can be subtle, often presenting as non-specific symptoms like headache, fever, and irritability, which can progress to severe neurological dysfunction or seizures. Early identification and int…

Neurobrucellosis presenting as acute stroke with brain abscesses: a case report.

Brucellosis is a prevalent zoonotic disease that is associated with consuming produce from animals infected with Brucella species, usually i … d on serological assessment. In rare instances, neurobrucellosis can cause stroke-like symptoms and brain abscesses. Neurobrucellosis should be considered in such patients when other neurological disorders cannot explain neuroimaging abnormalities.

Clinical analysis, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for otogenic brain abscesses.

Objective: To explore the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for otogenic brain abscesses (OBA). Methods: Clinical data from 10 patients with OBA were analyzed retrospectively. Clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment experiences were summarized. Results: Two were first diagnosed in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, 5 in Neurosurgery, and 3 in other departments. There were 6 cases of temporal lobe abscess and 4 cases of cerebellar abscesses. Five cases were accompanied by 1 or more intracranial complications. Headache is a common presentation in all cases. Th…

Brain Abscess as a Complication of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: A Case Report.

An 18-year-old male, previously diagnosed with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), presented to the outpatient department with a co … ur-weekly antibiotic regimen was initiated, which resulted in a profound improvement in symptoms. A brain abscess can arise as a complication of vascular malformation in a patient with HHT, providing a nidus for bacteria to migrate toward the brain. Early recognition of HHT is essential in these patients and their affected family members, as screening can help …

Brain abscesses in infective endocarditis: contemporary profile and neuroradiological findings.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses (BA) are severe lesions in the course of infective endocarditis (IE). We compare the bacteriological, clinical data, background, associated lesions, and outcome of IE patients with and without BAs, and assess the MRI characteristics of BAs. METHODS: Retrospective study of 351 consecutive patients with definite IE (2005-2020) and at least one brain MRI. Patients with and without BAs were compared. RESULTS: Twenty patients (5.7%) had BA (80% men; median age: 44.9 ± 11.5). They were younger (p = 0.035) and had a higher rate of predisposing factors (previous IE 20% vs…

Multiple brain abscesses due to Nocardia spp. in an immunocompetent patient.

The infection by Nocardia spp is not common in immunocompetent patients. The empirical antimicrobial treatment directed by anatomical regions does not contemplate the particularities of the germ and the microbiological analysis is necessary for the specific treatment. We present the case of a previously healthy and immunocompetent patient, without known risk factors for Nocardia spp. infection, with evidence of involvement of the pulmonary parenchyma and the skin and subsequent development of multiple brain abscesses.

Management of a Brain Abscess Presumably Caused by Radiation Osteomyelitis of the Mandible.

In this clinical report, we present the management of a brain abscess that was presumed to be caused by radiation osteomyelitis of the mandible. The patient underwent chemoradiotherapy for oropharyngeal carcinoma on the left side at the Department of Otolaryngology of our hospital in 2000. Local recurrence or metastasis did not occur post-treatment. In January 2009, the patient was diagnosed with radiation osteomyelitis of the mandible on the left side, complicated by a pathologic fracture. In July 2011, numbness occurred in the left upper extremity and the patient was transferred to the emerg…

A Case of Brain Abscess Caused by Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

Reports of brain abscesses caused by medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) are very rare. We here present the case of a 76-year-old man with terminal-stage prostatic carcinoma and a brain abscess caused by MRONJ at the maxilla. The patient had been treated with zoledronic acid and denosumab for bone metastasis. For the brain abscess, an antibiotic regimen based on ceftriaxone and metronidazole and a sequestrectomy contributed to a successful outcome. In the case of maxillary MRONJ extending to the maxillary sinus, active resection of the infected bone should be considered to prev…

Bifrontal brain abscesses secondary to orbital cellulitis and sinusitis extension.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial abscesses are rare and life-threatening conditions that typically originate from direct extension from nearby structures, hematogenous dissemination or following penetrating cerebral trauma or neurosurgery. FINDINGS: A 36-year-old male presented to our emergency department with complaints of left eye swelling, headache and drowsiness. On physical exam, the patient was febrile and his left upper eyelid was markedly swollen with fluctuance and drainage. Maxillofacial computed tomography was obtained to evaluate for orbital pathology but revealed bifrontal brain abscesse…
