[Hemispheric cerebrovascular lesions with secondary brain stem involvement. Anatomo-clinical study].

The authors studied incidence, nature and place of vascular injuries of brainstem secondary to acute hemispheric vascular injuries. In a large number of 363 patients deceased and submitted to autopsy, incidence was 10.2%, higher in haemorrhagic primitive injuries (13.4%) in comparison with ischemic ones (4.9%). The nature of brainstem secondary injuries appears to be above all of haemorrhagic type and pons the favourite place. Such injuries are determined not only by compression but also by distorsion of brainstem.

Brain-stem evoked response waveform variation associated with recurrent otitis media.

Two cases suggest that long-standing recurrent otitis media contributes to delayed brain-stem evoked response wave III and V latencies persisting after resolution of the otitis media. The persistence of the delayed waves may not reflect structural damage, but rather may still reflect a slowly recovering system.

Ascending brain-stem noradrenergic pathways modulate the renin response to haemorrhage.

Ventral noradrenergic projections (VNAB) from lateral tegmental (A1, A2) and dorsal noradrenergic projections (DNAB) from the coeruleal (A6) as well as A1 cell groups in the brain-stem of the rat were lesioned by intracerebral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine. A marked increase in plasma renin activity and adrenaline concentrations followed haemorrhage (0.5 ml/100 g body weight) in the sham-operated rats. VNAB-lesioned rats showed a similar response to the sham-operated controls, but in DNAB-lesioned animals the rise of plasma renin was markedly attenuated.

GABA depletion in chick brain-stem after intraventricular injection of cefazolin.

The effects of cefazolin, given into the III cerebral ventricle at different doses were studied on GABA content, GAD and GABA-T in the brain-stem of young chickens (Gallus domesticus). A dose-dependent fall in GABA content was observed; GABA decrease was evident 15 min after the administration, reached its nadir at 60 min and disappeared at 120 minutes. Glutamate decarboxylase and GABA-transaminase activity were not significantly changed. Present experiments suggest the excitatory and convulsant effects of cefazolin in chicks are related to GABA depletion in the brain-stem.

Auditory nerve and brain stem responses in homozygous jaundiced Gunn rats.

In humans, functional evidence based on recording cochlear microphonic, auditory nerve, and brain stem responses has shown that the site of lesion in hearing loss following neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is the auditory nerve (with sparing of the hair cells). Structural damage to the central nervous system (CNS) including the cochlear nuclei has been demonstrated in adult, homozygous Gunn rats which develop hyperbilirubinemia shortly after birth. In an attempt to use the Gunn rat as an experimental model for bilirubin-induced CNS damage, auditory nerve and brain stem responses (ABR) were recorded…

Effects of neonatal conductive hearing loss on brain stem auditory nuclei.

Both postnatal auditory deprivation and experimentally produced conductive hearing losses in mice result in incomplete maturation of most brain stem auditory neurons. The affected groups are: octopus cell, globular cell, small spherical cell, and large spherical cell groups in ventral cochlear nuclei; and the lateral superior olive and medial nucleus of the trapezoid body of the superior olivary complex. When 45 days of auditory deprivation are followed by 45 days of normal acoustic stimulation, there is incomplete maturation of neurons in: multipolar cell, globular cell, small spherical cell,…

Deriving early single-rosette brain organoids from human pluripotent stem cells.

Brain organoid methods are complicated by multiple rosette structures and morphological variability. We have developed a human brain organoid technique that generates self-organizing, single-rosette cortical organoids (SOSR-COs) with reproducible size and structure at early timepoints. Rather than patterning a 3-dimensional embryoid body, we initiate brain organoid formation from a 2-dimensional monolayer of human pluripotent stem cells patterned with small molecules into neuroepithelium and differentiated to cells of the developing dorsal cerebral cortex. This approach recapitulates the 2D to

Alterations in auditory brain stem response distinguish occasional and constant tinnitus.

BACKGROUNDThe heterogeneity of tinnitus is thought to underlie the lack of objective diagnostic measures.METHODSLongitudinal data from 20,34 … transitioned to constant tinnitus, the likelihood of tinnitus to persist was much greater. Auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) from subjects reporting nontinnitus (controls), occasional tinnitus, and constant tinnitus show that wave V latency increased in constant tinnitus when compared with occasional tinnitus or nontinnitus. The ABR from occasional tinnit …

Buyang Huanwu Decoction regulates neural stem cell behavior in ischemic brain.

The traditional Chinese medicine Buyang Huanwu Decoction has been shown to improve the neu-rological function of patients with stroke. However, the precise mechanisms underlying its effect remain poorly understood. In this study, we established a rat model of cerebral ischemia by middle cerebral artery occlusion and intragastrically administered 5 g/kg Buyang Huanwu Decoction, once per day, for 1, 7, 14 and 28 days after cerebral ischemia. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a number of cells positive for the neural stem cell marker nestin in the cerebral cortex, the subven-tricular zone and

Shall we treat hydrocephalus associated to brain stem glioma in children?

PURPOSE/METHOD: Brain stem glioma accounts for 6-9% of brain tumors in children. Tumor progression may lead to CSF pathway obstruction and development of hydrocephalus. We retrospectively reviewed charts of patients consecutively treated in our institution with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma in order to assess incidence of hydrocephalus, its management, and its impact on overall survival. All patients had brain stem glioma not amenable to surgery. Cases with exophytic brain stem glioma were excluded. RESULTS: Fifty-one children were treated from January 2005 to December 2010 for brain stem …

Altered responses of MeCP2-deficient mouse brain stem to severe hypoxia.

Rett syndrome (RTT) patients suffer from respiratory arrhythmias with frequent apneas causing intermittent hypoxia. In a RTT mouse model (methyl-CpG-binding protein 2-deficient mice; Mecp2(-/y)) we recently discovered an enhanced hippocampal susceptibility to hypoxia and hypoxia-induced spreading depression (HSD). In the present study we investigated whether this also applies to infant Mecp2(-/y) brain stem, which could become life-threatening due to failure of cardiorespiratory control. HSD most reliably occurred in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Sp…

[Cocaine-induced brain stem stroke associated to craneal midline destructive lesions].

INTRODUCTION: Abuse of cocaine and other sympathomimetic drugs has been reported as a significant risk factor for stroke. The physiopathologic mechanisms implicated are multifactorial. Chronic cocaine use leads to extensive destruction of osteocartilaginous structures of nose, sinuses and palate. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 56 years-old woman with hypertension and smoke abuse who was admitted with a pontine paramedian infarction. Cranial resonance findings of midline destructive lesions lead to the suspicion of chronic cocaine consumption. The initial outcome was good but she was re-

Primate embryonic stem cell-derived neuronal progenitors transplanted into ischemic brain.

Transplantation of stem cells has the possibility of restoring neural functions after stroke damage. Therefore, we transplanted neuronal progenitors generated from monkey embryonic stem (ES) cells into the ischemic mouse brain to test this possibility. Monkey ES cells were caused to differentiate into neuronal progenitors by the stromal cell-derived inducing activity method. Focal cerebral ischemia was induced by occluding the middle cerebral artery by the intraluminal filament technique. The donor cells were transplanted into the ischemic lateral striatum at 24 h after the start of reperfusio
