Cot death and the third branchial arch.

Congenital anomalies of the parathyroids in cases of cot death have been reported by several workers. Carotid-body hypoplasia also has been noted in typical cases of cot death. Neurally conditioned airway occlusion at the oropharyngeal level has been postulated as a precipitating factor of cot death. All these lines of evidence involve structures derived from the third branchial arch, and it is suggested that developmental arrest of this arch in early gestation may be the pathandemical basis of cot death.

Bronchogenic Cyst in the Cervical Region: A Rare Entity - A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Bronchogenic cysts originate from the tracheobronchial bud, which arises from the embryonic foregut. Congenital bronchogenic cysts in the cervical region, especially in the thyroid or perithyroidal area, are extremely rare. Moreover, distinguishing them from other cervical cystic lesions such as thyroglossal duct and branchial cleft cysts and metastatic cervical lymph nodes is difficult preoperatively. In this report, we discuss a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented to us with a history of anterior neck swelling for two weeks with occasional palpitations and bilateral flank pain. On work

An unreported variation of the cervical vagus nerve: anatomical and histological observations.

Variations involving the cervical portion of the vagus nerve are seemingly very rare. We report an adult male found to harbour a right cervical vagus nerve that crossed anterior to the right common carotid artery to terminate in the lateral aspect of the thyroid gland. A very small continuation of this nerve was found to continue distally into the thorax. Histologically, this part of the vagus nerve did not contain ganglion or other cell bodies. There were no heterologous inclusions (thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, salivary gland or branchial cleft remnants) present. Although grossly there was a

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of branchial cleft cysts by CT scan.

The author stresses the importance of CT scanning in diagnosing branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) and in differentiating them from other cystic masses of the neck and parotid region. The CT examinations of 40 patients with neck or parotid cystic lesions suspected of being BCCs have been reviewed and correlated with the histological diagnosis. Sixteen BCCs (12 of the second and 4 of the first cleft) and 24 BCC mimics were evaluated. A definitive CT diagnosis of second BCC was possible in 83% of the cases. Exclusion of this diagnosis was possible in 94% of BCC mimics. The total accuracy of CT was 90%

[Salivary gland choristoma (hamartoma) of the middle ear: a case report].

OBJECTIVE: Middle ear salivary gland choristoma are extremly rare. We report a case, describe the clinical management and review the literature. CLINICAL CASE: A 12 year old boy presented with unilateral conductive hearing loss associated with a large inferior retraction pocket on otoscopy. CT scan demonstrated a large mass in the left middle ear cavity. The incus was absent and the stapes was partially eroded. Middle ear exploration demonstrated an 8 mm yellow/red mass in the region of the fallopian canal. This mass was comptly removed and histopathology confirmed salivary gland choristoma.

First Branchial Cleft Anomaly Mimicking Cholesteatoma: A Pediatric Case Study and Surgical Approach.

BACKGROUND First branchial cleft anomalies (FBCAs) are rare congenital disorders with clinical manifestations and anatomy that are variable and complex. Due to the anatomical proximity to the facial nerve and association with infection, FBCAs require accurate diagnosis and careful management. The purpose of this report was to share the diagnosis and treatment of an extremely rare case of a 4-year-old girl with an FBCA presenting as a painless mass of the left external auditory canal and an inconspicuous depression in the left mandibular angle, a presentation that can easily be misdiagnosed as

Elsahy-Waters syndrome is caused by biallelic mutations in CDH11.

Elsahy-Waters syndrome (EWS), also known as branchial-skeletal-genital syndrome, is a distinct dysmorphology syndrome characterized by facial asymmetry, broad forehead, marked hypertelorism with proptosis, short and broad nose, midface hypoplasia, intellectual disability, and hypospadias. We have recently published a homozygous potential loss of function variant in CDH11 in a boy with a striking resemblance to EWS. More recently, another homozygous truncating variant in CDH11 was reported in two siblings with suspected EWS. Here, we describe in detail the clinical phenotype of the original CDH

Protocadherin PAPC is expressed in the CNC and can compensate for the loss of PCNS.

Protocadherins represent the biggest subgroup within the cadherin superfamily of transmembrane glycoproteins. In contrast to classical type I cadherins, protocadherins in general exhibit only moderate adhesive activity. During embryogenesis, they are involved in cell signaling and regulate diverse morphogenetic processes, including morphogenetic movements during gastrulation and neural crest migration. The two protocadherins paraxial protocadherin (PAPC) and axial protocadherin (AXPC) are indispensable for proper gastrulation movements in Xenopus and zebrafish. The closest relative PCNS instea

Neural crest cell survival is dependent on Rho kinase and is required for development of the mid face in mouse embryos.

Neural crest cells (NCC) give rise to much of the tissue that forms the vertebrate head and face, including cartilage and bone, cranial ganglia and teeth. In this study we show that conditional expression of a dominant-negative (DN) form of Rho kinase (Rock) in mouse NCC results in severe hypoplasia of the frontonasal processes and first pharyngeal arch, ultimately resulting in reduction of the maxilla and nasal bones and severe craniofacial clefting affecting the nose, palate and lip. These defects resemble frontonasal dysplasia in humans. Disruption of the actin cytoskeleton, which leads to

Neuropilin-1 interacts with the second branchial arch microenvironment to mediate chick neural crest cell dynamics.

Cranial neural crest cells (NCCs) require neuropilin signaling to reach and invade the branchial arches. Here, we use an in vivo chick model to investigate whether the neuropilin-1 knockdown phenotype is specific to the second branchial arch (ba2), changes in NCC behaviors and phenotypic consequences, and whether neuropilins work together to facilitate entry into and invasion of ba2. We find that cranial NCCs with reduced neuropilin-1 expression displayed shorter protrusions and decreased cell body and nuclear length-to-width ratios characteristic of a loss in polarity and motility, after spec

Congenital neck masses.

Congenital neck lesions reflect abnormal embryogenesis in head and neck development. A thorough knowledge of embryology and anatomy is critical in the diagnosis and treatment of these lesions. The appropriate diagnosis of these lesions is necessary to provide appropriate treatment and long-term follow up, because some of these lesions may undergo malignant transformation or be harbingers of malignant disease.

Branchial cadmium and copper binding and intestinal cadmium uptake in wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from clean and metal-contaminated lakes.

Branchial binding kinetics and gastro-intestinal uptake of copper and cadmium where examined in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from a metal-contaminated lake (Hannah Lake, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) and an uncontaminated lake (James Lake, North Bay, Ontario, Canada). An in vivo approach was taken for gill binding comparisons while an in vitro gut binding assay was employed for gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) uptake analysis. By investigating metal uptake at the gill and the gut we cover the two main routes of metal entry into fish. Comparisons of water and sediment chemistries, metal burdens in

Frontonasal malformation, first branchial arch anomalies, congenital heart defect, and severe central nervous system involvement: a possible "new" autosomal recessive syndrome?

Here we report on a girl presenting with midline cleft lip/palate, prominent forehead, macrocephaly, first branchial arch anomalies, and tetralogy of Fallot. Imaging studies showed polymicrogyria, enlarged ventricles with a large cystic lesion extending postero-superiorly over the cerebellum, abnormally modeled cerebellum, and congenital aqueductal stenosis. To our knowledge, this combination of clinical signs involving the frontonasal process, midline lip clefting, congenital heart malformation, and severe CNS developmental abnormalities has not previously been reported. Clinical, imaging dat

Detection of an appropriate kinase activity in branchial arches I and II that coincides with peak expression of the Treacher Collins syndrome gene product, treacle.

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an autosomal dominant craniofacial disorder involving the mid and lower face and, in particular, the tissues affected arise solely from embryonic branchial arches I and II. TCOF1, the gene involved in TCS, has been cloned and although the function of the encoded protein, treacle, has not yet been established, it exhibits peak expression in the branchial arches. Treacle contains a series of repeating units of acidic and basic residues, which are predicted to contain putative casein kinase II (CKII) and protein kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation site motifs. In add
