This study describes a rare case of male granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) with recurrence in different sites on the ipsilateral side. A 48-year-old male patient presented with no previous history of breast-related disease, and physical examination suggested a mass in the right breast. Ultrasonography revealed a cyst and infection in the right breast. No obvious abnormality was found in laboratory analysis, and a core needle biopsy revealed GLM. Incision and drainage were applied to the right lesion, and symptoms resolved within a few weeks. At 2 years following this initial presentation, t

The inverse problem of the identification of an anomalous object (e.g., cyst or tumor) in a female breast immersed in water is solved by the matching of theoretical fields (for trial objects), employing an approximate field ansatz, to the scattered ultrasonic wave field measured on a surface fully enclosing the object.

At 1188 patients we investigated the value of sonography of the breast in the detection of malignancies. We used 2 automatic multitransducer water-bath scanners, at first the 3 MH Octoson, then System 1, a dedicated 4 MH water-bath breast scanner which allows for compound and simple scans in any scanning plane. The sensitivity for detection of 63 malignancies was 87%. Other pathologies were 18 fibroadenomas, 160 cysts, 6 abscesses, 2 fatty necroses, 2 papillomas, 9 prostheses, one of them broken. The difficulties associated with differential diagnosis in breast sonography are discussed in deta

Cutaneous and oral lesions appearing as verrucous papules are a regular and diagnostic finding in Cowden's disease. The lesion occur predominantly over the central portion of the face, concentrated around orifices, lips, gingiva, and tongue, and over the acral portions of the upper extremities. These skin lesions have been found to be associated with fibrocystic breast disease, carcinoma of the breast, thyroid tumors, ovarian cysts, gastrointestinal polyposis, fibromas, angiomas, and lipomas. It is important to be able to distinguish the skin lesions from simple verruca vulgaris because they s

Of 1757 consecutive women patients examined with ultrasound (US) between 1983-1986, 796 patients were asymptomatic, had no masses on their mammograms, and were scanned with whole breast US because their breasts were radiodense on mammography. Combinations of automated and real-time hand-held equipment, ranging in frequency from 3.9 MHz to 10 MHz. were used. Of the 796 examinations, 71.5%(569) were normal, 23.5%(187) disclosed cysts, and 4.3%(40) revealed solid masses. Four masses were biopsied, yielding one malignancy, two fibroadenomas and one normal breast tissue. All but 4 of the remaining

Toxoplasma gondii is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic disease that poses a threat to human health and a considerable loss to livestock farming. At present, clinical therapeutic drugs mainly target T. gondii tachyzoites and fail to eradicate bradyzoites. Developing a safe and effective vaccine against toxoplasmosis is urgent and important. Breast cancer has become a major public health problem and the therapeutic method needs to be further explored. Many similarities exist between the immune responses caused by T. gondii infection and the immunotherapy for cancers. T. gondii den

BACKGROUND: Subpubic cartilaginous cysts were initially described in 1996 with few reports to date.
CASE: We describe a 62-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer who presented with a painful, fixed, vulvar mass. MRI revealed an 18 x 10 x 12 mm3 mass extending from the anterior portion of the symphysis pubis without bony involvement. Excision was performed. Histologically, the mass consisted of fibrocartilage with extensive degenerative changes, compatible with a subpubic cartilaginous cyst. Over 24 months later, there has been no recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Subpubic cartilaginous cyst is

Palpable breast masses which have a nondiagnostic appearance on the mammogram often require a biopsy to rule out malignancy. Contact B-scan ultrasonography of such masses were performed in an effort to improve the diagnostic accuracy of mammography and reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies. A total of 200 patients with breast masses of 1-8 cm were examined by both methods. The results of this combined evaluation were compared to those of mammography alone. Of 115 pathologically proven lesions, 44 were fluid-filled cysts. Sonography correctly diagnosed all 44 cysts, while mammography was eq

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease of the male breast has not been documented in literature to date.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 46-year old male patient who presented with a painful breast lump for 1 year. On imaging, it was suspicious for hydatid disease of the breast and was successfully diagnosed preoperatively on fine-needle aspiration cytology and histopathology as hydatid disease of the breast.
DISCUSSION: Incidence of hydatid disease of the breast contributes to a minute number of total cases of hydatid disease. Male breast hydatid disease was unknown prior to this report. We did

Ganglion cysts are soft tissue swellings occurring most commonly in the hand or wrist. They are typically filled with gelatinous material rich in hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides. Although benign, variations in cyst content can provide important insight into underlying metabolic or microenvironmental processes. To date, uric acid crystal deposition within a ganglion cyst has not been reported. This case describes a 73-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer, treated with exemestane, who presented with a painful mass on the dorsum of the left midfoot. Physical examination revealed

BACKGROUND: The management of cystic brain metastases remains challenging, with high recurrence rates following treatment with resection and/or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Tumor resection and adjuvant radiation provide superior outcomes in comparison to those for each therapy alone, but large cystic tumor en bloc removal is difficult. Cyst aspiration can be used to decrease the radiation target volume, enabling safer delivery of a therapeutic radiation dose with improved local tumor control. However, cysts can rapidly recur following aspiration. Herein, the authors present a case in which

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. There is no clear association between PCOS and benign breast disease (BBD). The latter is a frequent benign disorder, affecting women between 20 and 50 years of age. To date, the classification remains controversial, and the risk of developing breast cancer that is associated with these changes is different depending on the histopathological findings. The most frequent changes are breast cysts, which are noted in up to 50% of patients older than 30 years of age. This up-to-date review presents t…

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast was performed in 10 volunteers and 102 women with suspected breast disease, using a 0.35-T superconducting magnet. All patients had prior x-ray mammography. MRI was superior to mammography in differentiating solid from cystic lesions and equivalent to mammography in providing information regarding different parenchymal patterns. Of 21 surgically proven carcinomas of the breast, MRI correctly identified 18 and mammography identified 19. The major disadvantage of MRI is its inability to show calcifications, benign or malignant. Future studies will b

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of phyllodes tumor of the breast and to compare these findings with the histologic grade.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained. The authors reviewed the MR findings in 30 female patients aged 16-73 years (mean, 40.2 years) with surgically confirmed phyllodes tumors. Analyzed MR findings included tumor shape, margin, internal enhancement, and size; signal intensity (SI) of tumor higher than that of normal breast tissue on T1-weighted images; SI of tumor low

Cystic hydatid disease is caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Humans are the accidental intermediate hosts of this organism. Hydatid disease is endemic in countries in which raising sheep and cattle constitutes an important means of livelihood. The most commonly affected organs are the liver and lungs. Involvement of the kidney, bone, brain and other organs is rare. Breast involvement in this disease is also very rare. A case of isolated hydatid cyst of the breast is presented, along with a review of the literature and a discussion on the pertinent clinical and radiological aspects

Breast cancer accounts for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Currently, treatment options in metastatic breast cancer consist of chemotherapy, along with endocrine, radiation, and/or biological therapies. Although advances in management have improved overall survival times, the treatment options for women with end-stage disease are mostly limited to supportive care. Herein, we present a case report that highlights the response of a 47-year-old premenopausal woman with end-stage (T4N3M1) breast cancer treated with metabolically supported chemotherapy (MSCT), ketogenic diet (KD), hy

When properly performed and interpreted, US is an indispensable tool in breast imaging. Despite improvements in equipment, the major roles for US in the breast remain the differentiation of cysts from solid masses and the guidance of interventional procedures. Neither of these are trivial tasks, for they have significantly reduced the number of surgical biopsies performed in the United States. Research studies investigating feature analysis and Doppler show future potential for US to be used to differentiate benign from malignant solid masses.
