Bronchogenic cysts are primitive, foregut-derived developmental anomalies with bronchial-type, pseudostratified cylindrical epithelium. They are usually discovered in the thorax. The occurrence of such cysts in the retroperitoneum is extremely rare. Imaging techniques are generally effective in the detection of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst. Here, we report two cases (a 27-year-old man and a 33-year-old man) who had no clinical symptoms and were found by chance to have masses in the adrenal gland area during routine physical examination. We found that they had some similar computed tomogra…

A 38-year-old woman developed a spontaneous right-sided tension pneumothorax during light aircraft travel. The aircraft was diverted to a re … right middle lobectomy was subsequently performed with histopathology showing a benign epithelioid bronchogenic cyst. Recovery was unremarkable with no residual pneumothorax or further episodes at 2 months postoperatively. Preventative excision of air-filled pulmonary abnormalities should be considered prior to air travel.

BACKGROUND: Intra-thymic bronchogenic cysts are a rare entity but should be considered in the differential of all non-invasive thymic masses.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 50-year-old patient who was found to have an incidental thymic mass on computer tomography of the chest. Non-invasive thymoma was suspected and a thoracoscopic thymectomy was performed. Final pathology revealed a bronchogenic cyst.
CONCLUSION: Intra-thymic bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare tumors of the anterior mediastinum. It should be considered in differential diagnosis of anterior mediastinal masses.

We present an unusual case of cardiac tamponade in a 17-year-old girl immunocompetent patient due to Salmonella enterica ssp. bredeney following infection of a bronchogenic cyst. The patient was admitted to hospital with pleuritic chest pain, dyspnoea and fever. Pulmonary angio-CT showed a bronchogenic cyst compressing the left atrium. The echocardiography showed diffuse pericardial effusion with right ventricular collapse consistent with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was performed and microbiological cultures of the pericardial fluid became positive for Salmonella species confirmed la…

OBJECTIVE: An intradural extramedullary bronchogenic cyst (IEBC) is a congenital malformation and an extremely rare type of endodermal cyst. This study aims to report the clinical and radiologic characteristics and surgical outcomes of IEBCs and to review the available literature.
METHODS: The medical records of 6 patients (3 female) with pathologically confirmed bronchogenic cysts involving the spinal cord between 2009 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed, and follow-up evaluations were performed.
RESULTS: Of the 6 symptomatic lesions, 4 were located in the cervical vertebra, 1 at the lum…

Subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts have been described rarely, particularly among adolescents. Only a few reports have described the ultrasonographic features of bronchogenic cysts, characterizing them as nonspecific cystic masses with or without internal echogenic foci or debris. Therefore, it is hard to differentiate subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts from other subcutaneous cystic tumors ultrasonographically. We report a case of presternal subcutaneous bronchogenic cyst in an 18-year-old man with unusual ultrasonographic findings. Ultrasonography revealed a small, oval, cystic mass containing a we…

We experienced a rare case of anterior mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. A 55-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) and an abnormal shadow on the chest computed tomography. She had a 5.5 cm tumor at anterior mediastinum. The tumor was surgically removed completely by video assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst was established pathologically. After surgery, PSVT has disappeared.

We present a case report of a 28-year-old primigravida with a singleton pregnancy complicated by a fetal bronchogenic cyst compressing the left mainstem bronchus with resultant hyperinflation of the entire left lung and rightward mediastinal shift. An ex utero intrapartum treatment to resection of the fetal bronchogenic cyst via a fetal thoracotomy was performed at 36 weeks' gestational age, circumventing a potentially complicated neonatal airway emergency at birth.

Congenital cystic disease of the lung and mediastinum encompasses a continuum of entities, and a histological overlap of many of these anomalies is acknowledged. Moreover, it is possible for different lesions to coexist in the same patient. Careful evaluation prior to surgical resection will alert the surgeon to the possible presence of multiple lesions in one patient.

Whole body iodine scans are routinely performed in the nuclear medicine department as part of the management of differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Similarly, radioactive iodine has a well-established role as an adjunct to thyroidectomy in the treatment of these patients. A thorough understanding of the normal, benign, and pathologic biodistribution of iodine is imperative for the nuclear medicine physician. This knowledge leads to the accurate determination of the presence of metastatic or recurrent carcinoma, and may even facilitate the accurate detection of an undiagnosed condition. Above all

Bronchogenic cysts are rare findings within the central nervous system and even extremely seldom if they are located supratentorially. We report on a 25-year-old man who presented with a single generalized seizure without any accompanying neurological deficit 6 weeks prior to admission. MRI showed a smoothly limited, non-calcified cyst of a maximum of 55 mm in diameter. Large parts of the membrane were removed through a right anterior craniotomy, and a fenestration into the subarachnoidal space was performed. Histopathological examinations revealed a bronchogenic cyst. Previous reports of neur…

A notion has prevailed that carinal bronchogenic cyst and other congenital mediastinal cystic lesions, particularly those occurring in older children and adults, are usually asymptomatic, innocuous, and frequently only an incidental finding on routine chest roentgenogram or postmortem examination. Some physicians, therefore, have adopted a policy of observation for these patients. Our experience, however, as demonstrated in three cases reported herein, and the experience of others, clearly shows that carinal bronchogenic cyst is far from being usually asymptomatic and innocuous, but in fact of…

Intra-abdominal bronchogenic cysts are rare entities and only a handful of cases occurring within the lesser sac have been described. Further, the development of malignancy in a bronchogenic cyst is exceptional and one arising in a lesser sac has so far not been reported. We present herein an account of a 44-year-old man who presented with recurrent upper abdominal pain. Investigations revealed a mass in the lesser sac and a hydatid cyst in the liver. The histopathological examination of the excised mass showed bronchogenic cyst, with a neuroendocrine tumor of intermediate grade arising in its…

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are benign congenital anomalies originating from embryonic foregut development. Although typically located in the mediastinum or lung parenchyma, retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly rare, with only a limited number of cases reported in the literature. We present a case of a bronchogenic cyst situated in the left retroperitoneal space, along with a concise review of previously documented cases, summarizing their common epidemiological, clinicopathological, and prognostic features.
CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old female was admitted with unexplained lef…

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts can be caused by errors in the growth of the ventral foregut. Localization of the bronchogenic cyst (BC) varies depending on the level of the abnormal budding. They are usually located in the lungs and mediastinum. BCs of the diaphragm are a rare form of this abnormality.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old woman coughs and expectorates. CT scan evaluation revealed a soft tissue shadow of 6 × 5 cm in the left lung. Under thoracoscopic surgery, we found that the mass originated from the diaphragm away from the lung tissue, we completely removed the mass and the path…

BACKGROUND: Intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst is very rare. Surgical removal of the cysts is advised even the patients are asymptomatic, since the cyst can lead to complications, and there is a risk of malignant transformation. Thoracotomy or thoracoscopy is the most commonly used approach for complete excision of the cysts. To our knowledge, this is the first report to excise intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst completely by endoscopic submucosal tunnel dissection (ESTD).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male was referred to our hospital due to the detection of a submucosal tumor a…
