INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders are mental illnesses that impair judgment, thought process and mood that can result in physical and emotional disability. According to DSM-IV, mental disorders increases risk of traumatic injury, particularly burn [1] (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). However, there are few studies that look at patients with pre-existing major psychiatric disorders and burn outcomes. We aim to assess the incidence and intentionality of burn injury in patients with pre-existing psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients admitted to the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and predisposing factors of acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) in severely burned patients.
BACKGROUND DATA: Although some studies report on AAC in critically ill patients, very little is known about AAC after severe burns.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving patients with burns admitted to the burn intensive care unit (BICU) of a university hospital. The patient cohort was divided into two groups (AAC group: burned patients with histological proven acalculous cholecystitis, n=15;
CONTROL GROUP: population of all other burned pati

BACKGROUND: Burn is an overwhelming injury. The De Ritis ratio, defined as aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio, can be used to predict poor outcomes. We evaluated the risk factors, including the De Ritis ratio, associated with 1-year mortality after burn surgery.
METHODS: Patients who underwent burn surgery from 2009 to 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the risk factors for 1-year mortality after burn surgery. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of the De Ritis ratio was performed to

PURPOSE: Burns constitute approximately 10% of all combat-related injuries to the head and neck region. We postulated that the combat environment presents unique challenges not commonly encountered among civilian injuries. The purpose of the present study was to determine the features commonly seen among combat facial burns that will result in therapeutic challenges and might contribute to undesired outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a retrospective study performed using a query of the Burn Registry at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center for all active d

We report a 20-year-old male who suffered smoke inhalation injury and burns covering 26% of his TBSA, including his face, dorsal chest, and both the arms. The Abbreviated Burn Severity Index was 5 (likelihood of survival 95%). He underwent burn surgery, requiring massive transfusion. Postoperatively, he appeared increasingly hyperthermic, showed respiratory exhaustion, and was neutropenic (lowest white blood cell count was 0.8 Gpt with a normal granulocyte count). He developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, renal failure, and severe inflammatory response syndrome. Aggressive ventilation

These serial clinical and experimental studies were designed to clarify the pathogenesis of postburn MODS. Both animal and clinical studies were performed. In animal experiments, 46 male cross-bred dogs were cannulated with Swan-Ganz catheters and 39 of them were inflicted with 50% TBSA third degree burns (7 were used as controls). The burned dogs were randomly divided into 4 groups: immediate infusion, delayed infusion, delayed fast infusion and delayed fast infusion combined with ginsenosides. All dogs were kept under constant barbiturate sedation during the whole study period. Hemodynamics,

Toxic inhalants cause injury through a variety of different mechanisms, including direct irritation of the respiratory tract mucosa, asphyxiation, and systemic absorption of the toxin. The nature and extent of the acute injury depends on the inhalant's water solubility, aerodynamic features, pH, and concentration. In addition, a patient's underlying respiratory function may affect the clinical response. Smoke inhalation is a particularly challenging clinical problem because patients often are exposed to a large number of inhaled toxins and may suffer thermal injury to the respiratory tract as

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) released during the burning of sugarcane have been postulated to have a role in chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology. We tested the hypothesis that pristine SiNPs of the size present in sugarcane might cause chronic kidney injury when administered through the lung in rats. We administered 200- or 300-nm amorphous SiNPs twice weekly (4 mg/dose), or vehicle by oropharyngeal aspiration for 13 wk to rats followed by euthanasia after an additional 13 wk (26 wk total). Tissues were evaluated for the presence of SiNPs and evidence of histological injury. Both sizes

RATIONALE: Every year, ∼40,000 people suffer burn-related injuries in the United States. Despite recent advances, the odds of dying from exposure to fire, flames, or smoke are one in ∼1500. Smoke inhalation causes injury to the airways via a complex physiological process, and the treatment is mainly supportive. Many recent interventions aim to decrease the formation of fibrin casts, the main cause of airway damage in these patients. Among these, treatment with a combination of nebulized heparin and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has shown benefit.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We describe the case of a 58-year-o

BACKGROUND: Inhalation injury from smoke or chemical products and carbon monoxide poisoning are major causes of death in burn patients from fire accidents. Respiratory tract injuries from inhalation injury and carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome and cytokine storm syndrome. In the case of acute respiratory failure needing mechanical ventilation accompanied by cytokine storm, mortality is high and immediate adequate treatment at the emergency department is very important.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a case of acute respiratory distress syndrom

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Latin American Traditional Medicine, the use of Burseraceae oleoresins for headache relief is widespread. In the quilombola (maroon) communities of the municipality of Oriximiná, Pará State, Brazil, Burseraceae oleoresins are burned as incenses to treat headache; an effect attained by inhaling the smokes.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was designed to investigate the scientific rationale behind the use of Burseraceae pitch oleoresin smokes on headache by identifying its chemical constituents and discussing whether they could be beneficial for headache treatmen

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high mortality in burn patients. Previously, we reported that timely initiation of renal replacement therapy (RRT) with an individualized preference toward continuous modes at relatively higher than recommended doses has become standard practice in critically ill burn patients with AKI and is associated with a historically low mortality. The purpose of this cohort analysis was to determine if modality choice impacted survival in burn patients.
METHODS: After Institutional Review Board approval, a subset analysis was performed on de-id

INTRODUCTION: The mortality rates and Disability Adjusted Life Years lost of burn injuries (including scalds) among children below 15 years of age in Africa are more than ten and 20 times higher, respectively, than in high-income countries. Prevention of injuries and timely optimal management will help to reduce these figures. Management guidelines that are locally relevant to low income settings, incorporating universal principles, are required. We aim to provide a reference guide for the management of paediatric burn injuries in settings with limited resources using a resource-tiered approac

United Kingdom (UK) burn units face substantial new obstacles in delivering high quality care because of the advent of full-shift working patterns, cross-specialty cover arrangements, and increased trainee turnover. Junior trainees rely heavily on senior colleagues, who may not be readily accessible. The authors therefore proposed the introduction of standard operating procedures (SOPs), detailed written instructions used to achieve uniformity in performance and to improve outcomes. After undertaking a preliminary strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis of their use locally a

Respiratory tract injury is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and prolonged hospitalization in fire casualties. Direct insults include inhalation of superheated gas, steam, smoke, or toxic fumes. Indirect injury may result from interference with the mechanics of respiration. Pulmonary injuries result from sepsis, fluid overload, endogenous reactive substances, and "shock lung," and also occur secondary to metabolic disturbances resulting from hypoxia.

BACKGROUND: Occupational injuries and illnesses are a major preventable public health problem.
METHODS: This study evaluated the incidence, nature, and cause of awarded workers' compensation claims for a large state university and teaching hospital. Rates and types of injury were compared across age and gender.
RESULTS: Rates of injury varied over twofold with age, with those 16-25 having the lowest rates of injury and those 36-45 having the highest rates. Claims rates were 1.36-fold higher for women than men. Women had higher rates for injury resulting from lifting, falling, noxious exposur

The mortality rate of gunpowder explosion burns from fireworks factory accidents was high. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different managements on outcome of these burns patients and to optimize treatment measures and decrease the morbidity and mortality. During the period from January 1987 to December 1999 in our center, 44 patients burned in gunpowder explosions died. Fifty sex-, age-, TBSA- and full-thickness-matched patients who survived were selected randomly as a comparison group. Data on time and causes of death, fluid resuscitation, and management of inhalation inj

The current study was conducted to know the incidence, predisposing factors, spectrum, clinical profile and antifungal susceptibility (AFS) of fungal wound infection (FWI) in burn patients. Of a total of 71 patients, 20 (28.2%) emerged with the diagnosis of FWI. Fungal pathogens in this study were Candida tropicalis (14%), Candida parapsilosis (5.6%), Aspergillus niger (2.8%) and one each of Candida albicans (1.4%), Candida glabrata (1.4%), Syncephalestrum (1.4%) and Fusarium solani (1.4%). All patients with mould infections expired before the mycological culture results could be conveyed to c

BACKGROUND: Prolonged operative time and intraoperative hypothermia are known to have deleterious effects on surgical outcomes. Although millions of burn injuries undergo operative treatment globally every year, there remains a paucity of evidence to guide perioperative practice in burn surgery. This study evaluated associations between hypothermia and operative time on post-operative complications in acute burn surgery.
METHOD: A historical cohort study from January 1, 2006 to October 31, 2015 was completed at an American Burn Association verified burn centre. 1111 consecutive patients under
