AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the distribution and frequency of T(CD3) cells and cell sub-populations in tissue specimens of erosive lichen planus (EOLP).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Tissue specimens from buccal mucosa were taken from 14 healthy individuals--control group (CG)--and 17 subjects with EF-OLP. Applying monoclonal antibodies, T(CD3) cells, T cell subpopulations, The CD4, CD8 and CD4/CD8 ratios in both groups were determined. Cells in the epithelium and lamina propria were quantitatively and qualitatively determined in both groups. Data were analysed using the Student's t-test.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play an important role in autoimmune diseases. In skin, the presence of Tregs is thought to be mandatory for suppression of autoreactive T cells. Here, we assess the number of Tregs in skin of healthy subjects and patients with an autoimmune dermatosis.

The immunohistochemical investigation of hypertrophied tonsils in children of different ages (group 1--up to 7 years old, group 2--7-11 years old, group 3--12 years and older) are presented. The expression and localization of viral antigen, sIgA and IgE, CD3+ and CD20+ cells in the tonsils tissue has studied. We've founded out a decreasing of viral antigens expression in the older age groups. The highest intensity of sIgA expression has been determined in the second group. The count of CD3+ cells in the germinal centers of follicles has increased in 2 and 3 groups.

The morphological discrimination of leukemic from non-leukemic T cells is often difficult in adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) as ATL cells show morphological diversity, with the exception of typical "flower cells." We present a case of granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN) associated with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). GIN is a rare pathological finding noted in renal biopsy specimens. Furthermore, CLL does not usually cause GIN. In this case, acute renal injury probably resulted from GIN, and urgent dialysis was required, despite sufficient chemotherapy. Immunohistochemical analyses of a biopsy specimen revealed invasion of CD20( +) CLL cells, surrounded by reactive T cells, and granuloma formation. Thus, CLL may induce secondary interstitial nephritis as a granulomatous reaction.

Clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic characteristics of large granular lymphocyte (LGL) neoplasia in 21 cats were examined. CBA/J male mice with chronic Schistosoma mansoni infections display either moderate splenomegaly syndrome (MSS) or hypersplenomegaly syndrome (HSS). A 76-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of a cutaneous nodule on the right thigh. The tumour was composed of CD3+, large atypical cells, and CD20+, small normal-appearing cells. Flow cytometry showed that CD20+ cells outnumbered CD3+ cells. By Southern blot hybridization analyses, the malignant cells were shown to be of T-cell origin, because of the presence of rearranged bands for the beta chain of the T-cell receptor, but not for the immunoglobulin heavy chain. This case represents a T-cell lymphoma intermingled with a large number of non-neoplastic B cells.

Three cases of malignant histiocytosis were immunohistochemically studied. The cases included the following three patients: a 38-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a girl aged 5 years 9 months. All three patients died within 3 months of hospitalization. They had a high fever (temperature over 38.5 degrees C), lymph node swelling, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. The effects of mucosal T-cell activation on human small intestinal glycoprotein biosynthesis have been examined during short-term culture in vitro. The incorporation of 3H-glucosamine into tissue and secreted glycoproteins was determined. Activation of mucosal T lymphocytes of normal duodenal biopsies with the monoclonal anti-CD3 antibody significantly increased both the total glucosamine incorporation into glycoproteins (p less than 0.01) and the secretion of in vitro radiolabelled glycoproteins (p less than 0.001).
