ICG Lymphography in a 4-week Postmortem Cadaver: Implications for a Supermicrosurgery Training Model.

Surgical models are invaluable resources for training and for research and innovation. In the field of supermicrosurgery (SM), options for surgical models remain limited and imperfect. We report the use of a fresh, previously frozen 4-week postmortem cadaveric specimen for successful distal to proximal indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography of the upper extremity. Our technique was confirmed with handheld SPY fluorescence imaging, which visualized a clearly defined, linear lymphatic system. By outlining a straightforward, reproducible method of lymphatic mapping in cadaveric specimens, our group…

External jugular vein pierced by supraclavicular branches in a neonatal cadaver: a case report.

Anatomical variations in the venous structure and drainage patterns in the neck are not uncommon. However, this is the first known report on the external jugular vein being pierced by supraclavicular branches. In the lateral cervical region of a neonatal cadaver, the supraclavicular branches penetrated the external jugular vein superior to the clavicle, resulting in a circular venous channel formed around the nerve trunk. Variations such as these are important to note in order to minimize possible intra-operative complications sustained during surgical interventions such as venous catherizatio…

Minimally invasive hallux valgus correction with Internal Hallux Fixator® - A comparative cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: The Internal Hallux Fixator® (IHF®; Waldemar Link, Hamburg, Germany) was designed for open surgical hallux valgus correction. It allows a defined lateralisation of the first metatarsal head after V-shaped, Chevron-like distal metatarsal osteotomy in order to correct mild to middle hallux valgus deformities. The intramedullary fixation provides dynamic compression of the osteotomy and thus postoperative full weight bearing mobilization is an integral part of the therapy. This comparative cadaver model study investigates the feasibility of implanting the device using a minimally inva…

Survival of human cadaver skin on severe combined immune deficiency pigs: Proof of concept.

Transplantation of human xenografts onto immunocompromised mice is a powerful research tool for studying wound healing. However, differences in healing between humans and mice and their small size limit this model. We determined whether human cadaver skin xenografts transplanted onto pigs with severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) would survive and not be rejected. Meshed (1:1.5), cryopreserved human cadaver skin was transplanted onto 10 partial thickness dermatome wounds in each of two normal domestic pigs and two SCID pigs. Autografts (n = 2/animal) from the four animals were used as cont…

Pedicle distraction increases intervertebral and spinal canal area in a cadaver and bone model.

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar spinal stenosis is degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal and/or intervertebral foramen causing compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. Traditional decompression techniques can often cause significant trauma and vertebral instability. This paper evaluates a method of increasing pedicle length to decompress the spinal and intervertebral foramen, which could be done minimally invasive. METHODS: Three Sawbone (Sawbones Europe, Sweden) and 1 cadaveric lumbar spine underwent bilateral pedicle distraction at L4. A pedicle channel was drilled between the superior art…

Return of the cadaver: Key role of anatomic dissection for plastic surgery resident training.

Successful Plastic Surgery Residency training is subjected to evolving society pressure of lower hourly work weeks imposed by external committees, labor laws, and increased public awareness of patient care quality. Although innovative measures for simulation training of surgery are appearing, there is also the realization that basic anatomy training should be re-enforced and cadaver dissection is of utmost importance for surgical techniques. In the development of new technology for implantable neurostimulatory electrodes for the management of phantom limb pain in amputee patients, a design of a…

Assessment of a novel pinhole supplementary implant for sulcus fixation in pseudophakic cadaver eyes.

PurposeTo evaluate a novel small-aperture supplementary implant that applies the principle of pinholes for management of irregular astigmatism, in postmortem human eyes.MethodsPseudophakic human cadaver eyes were imaged by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) to assess position of the in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL). Eyes were prepared as per the Miyake-Apple technique. Two versions of the supplementary implant (open-loop and tripod designs) were then inserted into the sulcus of each eye. Evaluations under AS-OCT and from anterior and posterior views of the anterior segment…

Stability of knee ligament complex of Thiel-embalmed cadaver compared to in vivo knee.

BACKGROUND: The first biomechanical evaluation of new implants is usually carried out with cadavers. Fixation of Thiel-embalmed cadavers is supposed to preserve the histological structure, colour and consistency of the tissue and has a low risk of infection and toxicity. However, the biomechanical properties of Thiel-fixated tissue are still unknown. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of the Thiel-embalming method on the elastic properties of the ligament complex of the knee compared to in vivo knees during total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: The results of biomechanical tensile t…

Ankle joint pressure changes in high tibial and distal femoral osteotomies: a cadaver study.

AIMS: To assess the effect of high tibial and distal femoral osteotomies (HTO and DFO) on the pressure characteristics of the ankle joint. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Varus and valgus malalignment of the knee was simulated in human cadaver full-length legs. Testing included four measurements: baseline malalignment, 5° and 10° re-aligning osteotomy, and control baseline malalignment. For HTO, testing was rerun with the subtalar joint fixed. In order to represent half body weight, a 300 N force was applied onto the femoral head. Intra-articular sensors captured ankle pressure. RESULTS: In the absen…

Morphological relationship between the superior cervical ganglion and cervical nerves in Japanese cadaver donors.

INTRODUCTION: There are various communications between the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) and the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves. However, little information exists concerning the origin of these sympathetic ganglion branches at the superior, middle, and inferior regions of the human SCG. The aim of this study was to describe the human SCG in a morphometric manner with the communication with cranial and cervical nerves and supply. METHODS: This study characterized 72 SCG samples from 54 elderly Japanese human cadavers (30 males, 24 females; 65-100 years old). The SCG size (length, width,…

Cement Augmentation in Sacroiliac Screw Fixation Offers Modest Biomechanical Advantages in a Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: Sacroiliac screw fixation in elderly patients with pelvic fractures is prone to failure owing to impaired bone quality. Cement augmentation has been proposed as a possible solution, because in other anatomic areas this has been shown to reduce screw loosening. However, to our knowledge, this has not been evaluated for sacroiliac screws. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We investigated the potential biomechanical benefit of cement augmentation of sacroiliac screw fixation in a cadaver model of osteoporotic bone, specifically with respect to screw loosening, construct survival, and fracture-site…

Predictability in orbital reconstruction: A human cadaver study. Part I: Endoscopic-assisted orbital reconstruction.

In the treatment of orbital defects, surgeon errors may lead to incorrect positioning of orbital implants and, consequently, poor clinical outcomes. Endoscopy can provide additional visualization of the orbit through the transantral approach. We aimed to evaluate whether endoscopic guidance during orbital reconstruction facilitates optimal implant placement and can serve as a convenient alternative for navigation and intra-operative imaging. Ten human cadaveric heads were subjected to thin-slice computed tomography (CT). Complex orbital fractures (Class III/IV) were created in all eligible orb…

Magnetic positioning system and ultrasound guidance for lumbar zygapophysial radiofrequency neurotomy: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic low back pain related to degenerative spondylosis is commonly managed by the radiofrequency ablation of sensory nerves. Fluoroscopic guidance has been considered mandatory to ensure placement of the active tip of the cannula parallel to the nerve to provide adequate neurolysis. Conversely, analgesic (or diagnostic) blockade is usually accomplished by placing the needle perpendicular to the nerve using either fluoroscopy or ultrasound (US) guidance. The recently introduced disposable equipment of internally cooled radiofrequency allows the denervation procedur
