BACKGROUND: Shigellosis or bacillary dysentery, an acute bloody diarrhoea, is a major public health burden in developing countries. In the absence of prompt and appropriate treatment, the infection is often fatal, particularly in young malnourished children. A conjugate consisting of detoxified lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio cholerae, a carrier polysaccharide matrix and an immunogenic protein has been synthesised and the reaction conditions have been optimised for obtaining a high degree of conjugation.
