The aim of this exhaustive review and meta-analysis was to explore the relation among serum protein, inflammatory markers, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities in adult patients on maintenance hemodialysis. We searched the Medline, Science Citation Index, Academic Search Premier, Cochrane Library, and Embase electronic data bases. Data extraction and quality assessment were done independently by two reviewers and results were pooled using the random effects model. Cochran's Q was used to identify heterogeneity and a funnel plot was used for assessment of publication bias. A meta-analys

HIV-infected patients have a significantly higher risk of developing cardiovascular events during the progression of HIV disease. Atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular injury, pulmonary hypertension and thrombosis are consistently described in both combined antiretroviral therapy (cART)-treated and naive HIV-positive patients as major clinical complications. Recent studies indicate that the pathogenesis of cardiovascular lesions in HIV-positive patients is related to direct and indirect effects of HIV infection on vessel structures, independently of traditional risk factors.

Nowadays periodontal diseases are treated as a one of a social diseases. The main consequences of them are: premature teeth loss and possibility of inducing, aggravating and modifying many systemic disorders, such as endo- and myocarditis, glomerulonephritis, iriditis, retinitis, rheumatic polyarthritis. The scientific data performed in the last 10 years indicate links between periodontitis and atheromatosis, coronary heart disease and acute coronary events, including myocardial infarction. In this study reported was the epidemiological dependences between periodontal and cardiovascular diseas

Since infections associated with microbial communities threaten human health, research is increasingly focusing on the development of biofilms and strategies to combat them. Bacterial communities may include bacteria of one or several species. Therefore, examining all the microbes and identifying individual community bacteria responsible for the infectious process is important. Rapid and accurate detection of bacterial pathogens is paramount in healthcare, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Here, we analyze biofilm composition and describe the main groups of pathogens whose presence in

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infection is one of the main causes of morbidity in children. Some studies have suggested that pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease with haemodynamic repercussion increase the severity of respiratory infections, but there are few publications in developing countries.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study evaluating the impact of pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease (CHD) with haemodynamic repercussion as predictors of severity in children under 5 years of age hospitalised for acute respiratory infection.
RESULTS: Altogether,

There is growing concern that the severe respiratory disease in birds (avian influenza or 'bird flu') caused by the H5N1 influenza virus, might potentially spread more widely to humans and cause a pandemic. Here we discuss clinical issues related to human infections by the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype of the avian influenza A virus and make a clinical comparison with recent information obtained from studies of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Firstly, we consider the potential increase in cardiovascular events in humans infected with the H5N1 virus. Like SARS-CoV-2 infection, H5N1 infection may result

OBJECTIVE: Chronic infections could be contributing to the socioeconomic gradient in chronic diseases. Although chronic infections have been associated with increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and cardiovascular disease, there is limited evidence on how infections affect risk of diabetes.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined the association between serological evidence of chronic viral and bacterial infections and incident diabetes in a prospective cohort of Latino elderly. We analyzed data on 782 individuals aged >60 years and diabetes-free in 1998-1999, whose blood was tested for

Inhibitors of sodium-glucose cotransporters type 2 (SGLT2) reduce hyperglycemia by increasing urinary glucose excretion. They have been evaluated in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with diet/exercise, metformin, dual oral therapy or insulin. Three agents are available in Europe and the USA (canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin) and others are commercialized in Japan or in clinical development. SGLT2 inhibitors reduce glycated hemoglobin, with a minimal risk of hypoglycemia. They exert favorable effects beyond glucose control with consistent body weight, blood pressure, and serum u

Metabolic, opportunistic, and other infectious complications of HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy continue to be major areas of active investigation. This year's Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections included many important presentations on the clinical aspects of HIV complications. In each successive year, the studies reported in the area of complications have matured and now include more randomized trials evaluating interventions for the management of HIV complications and more well-designed observational studies with long-term follow-up. This article will review new

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize women-specific contributors to cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women with HIV (WWH) and translate recent evidence on imaging, biomarkers, and prevention into practical strategies for assessment and management.
RECENT FINDINGS: WWH experience higher rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes and cardiometabolic complications. Weight gain associated with some integrase inhibitors may compound postpartum risk. Early menopause is more common, and biochemical confirmation improves attribution of symptoms and risk. Subclinical myocardial injury is frequent; coronary microva

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the absence of a prophylactic/therapeutic vaccine or cure, the most amazing achievement in the battle against HIV was the discovery of effective, well-tolerated combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). The primary research question remains whether PLWH on prolonged successful therapy has accelerated, premature, or accentuated biological aging. In this review, we discuss the current understanding of the immunometabolic profile in PLWH, potentially associated with biological aging, and a better understanding of the mechanisms and temporal dynamics of biological aging in P

Sodium glucose contrasporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) were initially introduced as a novel class of modestly effective antiglycemics. Over the last 5 years, multiple members of this class have been examined for their cardiovascular safety, effects on heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in diverse populations with or without diabetes type 2. The plethora of studies and outcomes examined make it difficult for the practitioner to track the entirety of the evidence. SGLT2i improve cardiorenal outcomes and have a beneficial risk benefit ratio across po

SARS-CoV-2 infection and BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination carry distinct cardiovascular risk profiles, yet direct comparative evidence across all immunological exposure groups and both sexes remains limited. Using the TriNetX Research Network (December 2020-December 2024), we stratified 30.3 million individuals into four mutually exclusive cohorts: uninfected/unvaccinated controls (G1), infected/unvaccinated (G2), vaccinated-only (G3), and hybrid immunity (G4). Fifty prespecified cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and mortality outcomes were evaluated across four temporal windows (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, and >9

Our exposome, encompassing our environmental and lifestyle exposures across the life span, is a critical determinant of cardiovascular health. Clinical and epidemiological data demonstrate that sleep, stress, exercise, smoking, viral respiratory infections, and environmental pollution each modulate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, yet the pathobiological mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly understood. Fundamental research into how the exposome and the physiological responses to it shape cardiovascular pathophysiology holds significant promise for expanding biologic underst

Cardiovascular diseases are widely distributed throughout the world. Human parasitic infections are ubiquitous. Tropical parasites are increasingly recognized as causes of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we address the most frequently reported parasites that directly infect the myocardium, including Trypanosoma cruzi, the protozoal causative agent of American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease), and Taenia solium, the cestode causative agent of taeniasis and cysticercosis. We also discuss tropical endomyocardial fibrosis, trichinellosis and schistosomiasis. Health systems, attitudes, the

Patients with central retinal artery occlusion usually suffer from serious systemic diseases that could be potentially threatening life. Retinal emboli are associated with the presence of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, hematological disturbances or infections. The goal of this study is the assessment of the most common coexisting systemic diseases in patients with the occlusion of retinal arteries. We retrospectively studied 51 patients with symptomatic retinal artery occlusion treated in The Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Lublin from 199

INTRODUCTION: The REPRIEVE study demonstrated significant reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) with pitavastatin among people living with HIV (PWH) with low to moderate cardiovascular risk. Most MACE events occurred in higher-income countries, raising important considerations for similar primary prevention interventions within HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as antiretrovirals become safer and as PWH age.
DISCUSSION: Limited data from Africa and within REPRIEVE suggests that MACE may not be as prevalent among PWH as within other geographies. Cons

Bartonella bacilliformis invades the endothelial lining of the cardiovascular system. Damage to the red blood cells and white blood cells, the effects of the toxins, invasion of the brain and electrical charges induced by the organism so interfering with normal electrical stimulation of the heart may explain many of the features of cardiovascular disease (1-5).

Clinical trials of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for people with multiple sclerosis (pMS) are conducted in selected populations, excluding patients with comorbidities or concomitant medications. However, a large percentage of pMS have some additional disease, which could affect the response and choice of the DMT. The objective of this review is to assess how concurrent pathologies can impact the choice of DMTs. Relevant articles were selected through a systematic search in PubMed. Comorbidities were grouped for better classification into autoimmune, chronic infections, cardiovascular and

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition has been shown to reduce cardiovascular mortality and preserve kidney function in patients with type 2 diabetes. Kidney transplant recipients with diabetes demonstrate increased risk and accelerated progression of micro- and macrovascular complications and may specifically benefit from SGLT2 inhibition. However, potential concerns of SGLT2 inhibition include volume depletion and urinary tract infections.
OBJECTIVES: We report data on the use of SGLT2 inhibitors in a case series of ten patients with diabetes after kidney transplanta
