Automatic classification of free-text medical causes from death certificates for reactive mortality surveillance in France.

BACKGROUND: Mortality surveillance is of fundamental importance to public health surveillance. The real-time recording of death certificates, thanks to Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS), provides valuable data for reactive mortality surveillance based on medical causes of death in free-text format. Reactive mortality surveillance is based on the monitoring of mortality syndromic groups (MSGs). An MSG is a cluster of medical causes of death (pathologies, syndromes or symptoms) that meets the objectives of early detection and impact assessment of public health events. The aim of this s

Midwife-attended births in the United States, 1990-2012: results from revised birth certificate data.

INTRODUCTION: Data on attendance at birth by midwives in the United States have been available on the national level since 1989, allowing for the documentation of long-term trends. New items on payer source and prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) from a 2003 revision of the birth certificate provide an opportunity to examine additional aspects of US midwifery practice. METHODS: The data in this report are based on records on birth attendant gathered as part of the US National Standard Certificate of Live Birth from a public use Web site, Vital Stats (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/VitalStats.htm), wh

[Good practice in occupational health services: recommendations for prophylactic examinations and medical certifications in persons with diabetes mellitus].

The prevalence of diabetes and a significant proportion of unawareness of its risk among the patients indicate the need to include into general prophylactic examinations the standards of medical certification, which would prevent discrimination and ensure public safety. In certifying medical predispositions to work in a person with diabetes mellitus the key issue is to distinguish 2 categories of medical requirements: the higher - related to qualifying workers for jobs demanding psychophysical abilities, which affect the safety of the workers and their environment and the lower - related to qu…

A method to estimate mortality trends when death certificates are imprecisely coded: an application to cervical cancer in Italy.

Systematic analysis of mortality trends of cervix and corpus uteri cancers is difficult in Italy, as in many other countries, because of the poor specification of uterine cancer subsites in official death statistics. The aim of this article is to propose a method for the analysis of uterine cancers mortality based on high quality incidence and prevalence data from population-based cancer registries. The method assumes that the excess mortality of cancer patients, compared to death rates expected in the general population, is attributable to the specific cancer. The method is applied to estimat

Validation of death certificate diagnosis of out-of-hospital coronary heart disease deaths in Olmsted County, Minnesota.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of death certificate diagnosis of out-of-hospital (OOH) coronary heart disease (CHD) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in Olmsted County, Minnesota, between 1981 and 1994. METHODS: In this review of the medical records, autopsy reports, and coroner's files, OOH deaths with heart disease as the underlying cause of death on the death certificate were classified into CHD (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification [ICD-9-CM] codes 410-414) and non-CHD (other ICD-9-CM heart disease codes) deaths. A 10% random sample (n = 174) of

Occupational risk factors for cancer of the gastric cardia. Analysis of death certificates from 24 US states.

We evaluated the risk of gastric cardia cancer by occupation and industry in a case-control study using information from death certificates for 24 US states in 1984-1992. One thousand fifty-six cases of gastric cardia cancer were identified among men aged 20 years or more, including 1,023 whites and 33 blacks. Controls were 5,280 subjects who died of nonmalignant diseases, 5:1 matched to cases by geographic region, race, gender, and 5-year age group. Among white men, occupations with elevated risk included financial managers (odds ratio [OR] = 6.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-28.8), jani

[Waiting for the end of poliomyelitis. Setting of the last phase of the eradication program. National Commission for the Certification of the Eradication of Poliomyelitis].

The worldwide eradication of poliomyelitis is expected within a few years. A reinforcement of epidemiological, clinical and viral supervision is necessary. Besides a sustained immunization effort, particular attention is required from all clinicians concerning the cases of non-traumatic acute flacid palsy that they may observe. In these cases it is asked to clinicians to perform a search for enterovirus in stool and spinal fluid, and a poliomyelitis serology.

Comparison of autopsy, clinical and death certificate diagnosis with particular reference to lung cancer. A review of the published data.

Some clinicians and some epidemiologists appear to be under the illusion that techniques available for the diagnosis of internal diseases such as lung cancer have improved so much that autopsies are not necessary on the bodies of most people who die. Partly for this reason, partly for economic reasons and partly because clinicians fear litigation if autopsy shows that they treated patients for the wrong disease, autopsy rates have been falling in most developed countries. The object of the present review was to ascertain how much reliance can reasonably be put on clinical diagnoses made and de

Accuracy of death certificates: a population-based, complete-coverage, one-year autopsy study in East Germany.

The Goerlitz Autopsy Study is a population-based autopsy study, conducted in 1987 in the municipality of Goerlitz, population 78,484, in former East Germany. It is unique in that 1,023 (96.5 percent) of the 1,060 subjects who died in the municipality over a period of one year were investigated by full autopsy. An underlying cause was assigned to every death, using the procedures recommended by the International Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, ninth revision, German edition. Assignment of cause of death was done independently by the attending clinician and the patholog

Association between the American Board of Internal Medicine's General Internist's Maintenance of Certification Requirement and Mammography Screening for Medicare Beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States. Continuing medical education programs such as the American Board of Internal Medicine's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program can increase early detection of cancers by educating physicians about the benefits of screening. Did the imposition of American Board of Internal Medicine's MOC requirement affect guideline-compliant mammography screening? METHOD: To address this question, we took advantage of a natural experiment that occurred when one group of general internists was required to complete MOC by 2001 becau…
