Parsonage-Turner Syndrome, or neuralgic amyotrophy, is an acute-onset upper limb and shoulder girdle palsy that can occur in a post-viral, post-surgical or idiopathic setting. There have also been some reported cases of the syndrome occurring following vaccinations. The pathophysiology of neuralgic amyotrophy is not completely understood and many of the commonly used diagnostic imaging modalities we use to try and diagnose this syndrome are inaccurate and misleading. We present the case of a 40-year-old gentleman who presented with acute onset burning pain and fasciculations in his right upper

BACKGROUND Pancoast tumors, also called superior sulcus tumors, are a rare type of cancer affecting the lung apex. These tumors can spread to the brachial plexus and spine and present with symptoms that appear to be of musculoskeletal origin. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old Asian man presented to a chiropractor in Hong Kong with a 1-month history of neck and shoulder pain and numbness that had been treated unsuccessfully with exercise, medications, and acupuncture. He had an active history of tuberculosis, which was currently treated with antibiotics, and a 50-pack-year history of smoking. Cervical

Introduction The cervical plexus block (CPB) has been used for a long time for both analgesia and anesthesia in carotid endarterectomy and thyroid operations. To be unfamiliar with the technique and its perceived difficulty, potential risks, and possible adverse effects such as intravascular injection has limited broader use before the practical use of ultrasound. We hypothesize that the cervical plexus block can provide adequate anesthesia in tracheostomy cases and provide excellent anesthesia comfort when combined with a translaryngeal block. Methods This double-blinded, randomized 29 patien…

BACKGROUND: Traumatic cervical pseudomeningoceles (TCPs) occur secondary to traction of the cervical nerve roots resulting in violation of the dura. Surgical repair is not necessary in most cases because pseudomeningoceles have a high propensity to spontaneously resolve with conservative management alone. Currently, there are a limited number of cases of large TCPs (large is defined as ≥6 cm in greatest diameter), and there is no established guideline for the management of such lesions.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the cases of 2 young men in their 20s who were involved in a motor vehicle ac

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of digital acupoint pressure for treatment of the nerve root type of cervical spondylosis.
METHODS: Four hundred cases were randomly divided into a digital acupoint pressure group (DAP group) and a medicine group, 200 cases in each group. Acupoints of Quepen (ST 12), Jianjing (GB 21) and Tianzong (ST 11) etc. were used for digital pressing in the DAP group; and Chinese herb medicine of Gentongping was routinely taken in the medicine group. After three treatment courses, the symptoms of pain and numbness, the signs of pressure measurement by compres

Acute brachial neuropathy (ABN) is a rare disease, characterized by an acute or subacute onset of pain followed by weakness of shoulder or arm muscles without trauma or traction injury. So the diagnosis of this clinical entity is not easy. The purpose of this study was to analyze retrospectively the ABN in 14 cases focusing on the clinical profile and to evaluate the effectiveness of electrophysiologic study in diagnosis of ABN with a new result helpful in localizing a brachial plexus disorder. The most helpful electrophysiologic data of ABN in my patients seemed to be abnormalities of low amp

Diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy is a subacute painful, asymmetrical lower limb neuropathy due to ischaemic injury and microvasculitis. The occurrence of a cervical diabetic radiculoplexus neuropathy has been postulated. Our objective was to characterize the clinical features and pathological alterations of diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy, to see if they are similar to diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy and due to ischaemic injury and microvasculitis. We identified patients with diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy by review of the Mayo Clinic datab

INTRODUCTION: The central and peripheral nervous systems provide cholinergic innervation in the colon. The ability to assess their neuroanatomical distinctions is still a challenge. The pig is regarded as a relevant translational model due to the close similarity of its enteric nervous system (ENS) with that of human. Opioid-induced constipation is one of the most common side effects of opioid therapy.
METHODS: We developed an approach to differentiate the central and peripheral cholinergic innervation of the pig colon using double immunolabeling with a novel mouse anti-human peripheral type

The posterior subscapular approach to the brachial plexus is commonly indicated in patients with neural entrapment (neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, especially when associated with a large C7 transverse process or cervical rib) and paraspinal tumors or lacerating injuries involving the spinal nerves close to the spine. This approach is also preferred in patients with previous anterior neck operations and/or morbid obesity. We describe the anatomy and operative technique of this approach, which has been used by the senior author (DGK) for the past 25 years.

A right phrenic nerve palsy with severe respiratory and feeding difficulties throughout the patient's 2 1/2 years of survival was found at autopsy to relate to grossly complete atrophy of the muscle of the right diaphragm. An oblique fibrotic scar transected the right phrenic nerve at the level of the brachial plexus. There was marked reduction of the number of anterior motor neurons in the right central portion of cervical segments 2, 3, and 4. The lesion in the phrenic nerve is what would be expected following stretching during delivery.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease (echinococcosis) is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus species, commonly involving the liver and lungs. Cervical hydatid cysts are exceptionally rare, even in endemic regions, accounting for less than 1% of cases. Clinical presentation often mimics other benign neck masses, making early diagnosis challenging. Neurological manifestations due to mass effect on neural structures are exceedingly uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 29-year-old Iranian man presenting with a 2-week history of progressive left-sided neck swelling and associate

The diagnosis and treatment of brachial plexus lesions have developed remarkably in recent decades. The knowledge of anatomy and histology, … of supra-ganglionic complete lesions, we used the accessory spinal nerve, the motor branches of the cervical plexus and the intercostal nerves. In relation to peripheral neurolization, we tried to establish a certain order, beginning with reinnervation of muscles responsible for proximal function.

BACKGROUND: Transient traumatic neuropraxia of either the brachial plexus or cervical nerve root(s) is commonly described as a "stinger" or "burner" by the athlete. Stingers in American Football commonly occur acutely as isolated injuries; however, concomitant injuries, including cervical spine pathologies, have also been reported.
HYPOTHESIS: Among National Football League (NFL) athletes, the incidence rate of stingers is higher during the regular season than during the preseason and among positions with high velocity impacts such as running backs, linebackers, defensive backs, and receivers
