Dyslipidemia is a major contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, yet it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in food insecure populations. This study describes the prevalence of unreported and uncontrolled dyslipidemia in food insecure populations in Chicago, Illinois. Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon but sometimes fatal disease in which early recognition and therapy may prevent untoward complications. The case of a 26-year-old Chinese man who presented to the emergency department with rapidly progressive profound weakness and severe hypokalemia (serum potassium, 1.2 mEq/L) is presented. The patient required endotracheal intubation, ventilatory assistance, and intravenous potassium administration. Emergency medical evaluation and management of this entity are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Community Outreach Intervention Project (COIP) established a low-threshold mobile medical unit that is among the first to carry and dispense buprenorphine on-site at point of care in Chicago neighborhoods with high opioid overdose rates. A deeper understanding of the mobile medical unit implementation and operation costs is needed to inform sustainability and financial planning for healthcare systems across the country. Stormwater catch basins in urban areas provide important larval habitat for Culex mosquitoes. In this study we quantified adult Culex emergence using a newly designed emergence trap deployed in catch basins in suburban Chicago, IL. Traps were deployed from late June to mid-October, 2009-10, in 19 catch basins for a total of 461 trap-days.
