Household Tobacco Expenditure and Child Health Outcomes: Causal Evidence from a Transitional Economy.

Background/Objectives: The relationship between household tobacco expenditure and child health has attracted considerable attention from both academic and policy communities, as tobacco expenditure can influence children's health, nutrition, and overall well-being in multiple ways, particularly in rural and low-income settings. This study examines the causal impact of household tobacco expenditure on child health outcomes in a transitional economy. Methods: Using nationally representative microdata from the most recent Household Living Standards Survey, the authors employ Ordinary Least Square…

Obstetric Unit Closure Effects on Child Academic Achievement, Infant Health, and Maternal Care.

OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of obstetric unit closures on children's academic achievement, infant health, and maternal care outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study employs 1994-2009 birth certificate data from Iowa linked to school test scores for grades 2-11 through 2017-2018. Regressions based on two-way fixed effects (TWFE) and Callaway and Sant'Anna (C&S) difference-in-differences models estimate the effects of maternal residence in counties that had obstetric unit closures within 5 years before birth year. Outcomes are national percentile rankings (NPRs) on math and reading,

Converging crises and maternal and child health: colonialism, extreme weather, and COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a growing threat to human health, particularly in regions facing overlapping environmental hazards and social inequities. Puerto Rico-a U.S. territory with a colonial history-offers a unique case for examining how multiple disasters, including Hurricane Maria, ongoing earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, interact with structural vulnerabilities to affect maternal and child health. Despite increasing attention to climate-related health outcomes, little is known about the reproductive health impacts of cumulative disaster exposure in colonial contexts. METHODS: …

Maternal seafood consumption is associated with improved selenium status: Implications for child health.

Selenium (Se) is required for synthesis of selenocysteine (Sec), an amino acid expressed in the active sites of Se-dependent enzymes (selenoenzymes), including forms with essential functions in fetal development, brain activities, thyroid hormone metabolism, calcium regulation, and to prevent or reverse oxidative damage. Homeostatic mechanisms normally ensure the brain is preferentially supplied with Se to maintain selenoenzymes, but high methylmercury (CH3Hg) exposures irreversibly inhibit their activities and impair Sec synthesis. Due to Hg's high affinity for sulfur, CH3Hg initially binds w

Long-term mental health consequences of female- versus male-perpetrated child sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Research on child sexual abuse increasingly focuses on sexually offending females; however, there is a lack of research that focuses on the individuals being affected. Studies have suggested that the consequences for those affected by sexually offending males and females are comparable. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to compare mental health consequences of sexual abuse perpetrated by women versus men in quantity and type. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data was anonymously retrieved from the German-wide contact point "help line sexual abuse" from 2016 to 2021. Details of abuse cases, gender o

Specifying the psychosocial pathways whereby child and adolescent adversity shape adult health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Social scientists generally agree that health disparities are produced, at least in part, by adverse social experiences, especially during childhood and adolescence. Building on this research, we use an innovative method to measure early adversity while drawing upon a biopsychosocial perspective on health to formulate a model that specifies indirect pathways whereby childhood and adolescent adversity become biologically embedded and influence adult health. METHOD: Using nearly 20 years of longitudinal data from 382 Black Americans, we use repeated-measures latent class analysis (R

Effectiveness of health education on awareness of child sex abuse among school children.

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious and hidden problem in India. Despite being such a huge problem a culture of silence surrounds the subject of CSA. Empowering children to protect themselves and disclose the abuse is the only way to overcome the hidden problem of CSA. Hence the present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of health education. METHODOLOGY: Health education through interactive power point discussion and video was imparted to 200 girls of class 6th to 12th in Government higher secondary school, Coimbatore. Baseline data was collected using self-admin

Child and adolescent health in northwestern Syria: findings from Healthy-Syria 2017 study.

OBJECTIVES: Since the uprising in 2011, there has been limited health-care data from inside Syria in the academic literature. This study aims to provide an updated account of pediatric health needs in the northwestern part of Syria; this should help inform the management and delivery of health-care services in this population. METHODS: This is a prospective study, using a data registry, of all pediatric patients seen in a single center in northwestern Syria, between February and December 2017. We used international classification of diseases (ICD-10) codes to define cases, and tested several

Factors associated with mental health services referrals for children investigated by child welfare.

Although child welfare caseworkers are responsible for facilitating mental health services access for maltreated children, little is known about caseworkers' decisions to refer children to services. We aimed to identify factors associated with caseworker referral of children to mental health services after a maltreatment investigation. We analyzed data from 1956 children 2-17 years old from the Second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. We examined associations of children's predisposing, enabling, and need-related factors and caseworkers' work environment characteristics with

Immigrant parents' experience with the Swedish child health care system: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Immigration, particularly when it is involuntary, is known to be an emotional stressor, regardless of the reason behind it. It is always a challenge to be removed from the habitual and cultural action pattern of the person or family. This can make children more vulnerable, because they often arrive with an increased risk of poor physical health. Because of that, it is crucial that immigrant children have access to ongoing health care. The aim of this study is to shed light on the experience of non-European immigrants with Sweden's Child Health Care system. METHODS: Qualitative sem…

Child abuse, drug addiction and mental health problems of incarcerated women in Israel.

The mental health problems and pathways to drug addiction and crime among female inmates have long been of interest to researchers and practitioners. The purpose of the current study was to examine the possible association between multiple types of childhood abuse, mental health problems, and drug addiction and the incarceration of 50 Israeli women in prison. The findings indicated that female inmates come from risky families with a high prevalence of family mental health problems, parental drug addiction and crime, and sibling drug addiction and crime. Furthermore, they revealed that incarcer

The Nurse-Family Partnership: evidence-based public health in response to child maltreatment.

Too many Canadian children are exposed to child maltreatment-neglect, emotional maltreatment, exposure to intimate partner violence, and physical and sexual abuse. Retrospective data indicates that 32% of Canadian adults have experienced childhood abuse. There is evidence that child maltreatment is associated with a wide array of negative health consequences across the life span. These consequences expand across physical, mental, developmental and social domains to include suicide, substance abuse, anxiety, depression and physical health problems. Experts have asked for coordinated national le

Improving maternal and child health systems in Fiji through a perinatal mortality audit.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a standardized process of perinatal mortality audit (PMA) and improve the capacity of health workers to identify and correct factors underlying preventable deaths in Fiji. METHODS: In a pilot study, clinicians and healthcare managers in obstetrics and pediatrics were trained to investigate stillbirths and neonatal deaths according to current guidelines. A pre-existing PMA datasheet was refined for use in Fiji and trialed in three divisional hospitals in 2011-12. Key informant interviews identified factors influencing PMA uptake. RESULTS: Overall, 141 stillbirths and neo
