Genetic moderation of child maltreatment effects on depression and internalizing symptoms by serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), norepinephrine transporter (NET), and corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1) genes in African American children.

Genetic moderation of the effects of child maltreatment on depression and internalizing symptoms was investigated in a sample of low-income maltreated and nonmaltreated African American children (N = 1,096). Lifetime child maltreatment experiences were independently coded from Child Protective Services records and maternal report. Child depression and internalizing problems were assessed in the context of a summer research camp by self-report on the Children's Depression Inventory and adult counselor report on the Teacher Report Form. DNA was obtained from buccal cell or saliva samples and gen…

[Specified expectant mother, Child Welfare Act, and community cooperation: the role of psychiatrists].

In 2009, the amended provisions of Article 6 of the Child Welfare Act defined "Specified Expectant Mother" (Tokutei-ninpu) as an expectant mother with the need for potential support in nurturing her baby before its delivery. This term was subsequently supplemented with relevant notices and manuals of the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare; it then became a new target of the community network built for the prevention of child abuse. The two notices issued on November 30, 2012 are of great significance. One notice indicates that pregnant females should be screened for psychiatric disorders a

Policy brief: reforming outcomes measurement for deaf children in early intervention.

This policy brief examines critical flaws in the Child Outcomes Summary Form (COSF), the primary tool used to assess developmental progress in early intervention (EI) systems, and highlights its discriminatory impact on deaf children. The COSF is built on an audist framework that systematically excludes signed language competence as a valid developmental indicator and fails to account for the diverse developmental trajectories of deaf infants and young children. This foundational bias is particularly harmful for deaf children identified through newborn hearing screening, who often enter Birth

Screening Adult Patients in Emergency Departments (EDs) for Risk Factors of Child Maltreatment. A Swedish Pilot Study.

AIM: Swedish healthcare staff are obliged to immediately report suspected child maltreatment (CM) to child protection services (CPS), but often fail this duty. The use of screening instruments in EDs increases detection of adults with risk factors for CM. Such instruments have previously not been available in Sweden. The aim of the present study was to pilot test a Swedish version of the Dutch 'child-check' instrument, and evaluate a retrospective case series. METHODS: Our study was performed in an ED at Skåne University Hospital. The original Dutch instrument was translated with adaptation t

Depression in homeless mothers: addressing an unrecognized public health issue.

Homeless mothers experience disproportionately high rates of major depressive disorder compared with the general population. Stressed by their circumstances, these women struggle to protect their families. Children living with a depressed parent have poorer medical, mental health, and educational outcomes. Despite the adverse impact on children, depression among mothers experiencing homelessness remains unacknowledged, unrecognized, and untreated. This article reviews the evidence supporting preventive and therapeutic interventions with low-income and homeless mothers and children, and finds t

Parenting and discipline in post-conflict Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: While the literature on physical punishment concludes that it has negative effects on children, the practice remains common in many countries. In post-conflict countries with nongovernmental organizations (NGO) operating in child protection, traditional disciplinary practices may conflict with international child rights agendas. The country of Sierra Leone has a unique history of conflict, abject poverty, low literacy, and weak governance - often, NGO agents are responsible for providing social services that the government is unable to consistently provide. OBJECTIVE: We examined

RESEARCH ARTICLE: Adolescent abortions in the Covid-19 landscape: Exposing the legal Achilles' heel.

The law ought to ensure that reproductive health services are accessible to all persons - married or unmarried - without subjecting them to heightened scrutiny or procedural requirements. However, the intersection of various laws and their impact on the willingness of medical professionals to offer abortion and reproductive health services to adolescents makes timely, safe, and affordable abortions difficult for adolescents to obtain. This challenge is exacerbated by a lack of public healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas, and the overall restricted access to healthcare services du

Evaluation of forensic medical history taking from the child in cases of child physical and sexual abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Suspected child physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect are not uncommon presentations. As part of the assessment of these cases, a forensic medical history may be taken. This forensic history is used not only to determine the steps necessary to address the child's wellbeing but also to direct the forensic examination. Currently, there is no clear consensus on whether or not a forensic medical history should consistently be considered an integral element within the paediatric forensic evaluation. This study examines the value derived by the medical practitioner taking a forensic m

A Systemic Service Design Visualization Protocol for Complex Problems in Low-risk Public Service Application and Consultation Processes.

Complex public service problems with wicked-like features, including multiple actors, fragmented information, unclear responsibility boundaries, and no single uncontested solution, are difficult to structure in routine administrative settings. This article presents a systematic service design visualization protocol for low-risk public service applications and consultation processes, defined as administrative services that do not determine medical treatment, legal status, financial eligibility, child protection, disciplinary outcomes, or other high-stakes rights-affecting decisions. Intensive community treatment and support "Youth Wraparound" service in Western Australia: A case and feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple services are often needed to address the needs of young people with complex emotional or behavioural needs. The Youth Wraparound model of service aims to provide all health and supportive services from one coordinating agency. While this has been researched overseas, there are currently few examples of this described in the Australian psychiatric context. AIM: To document the implementation and evaluation of a Youth Wraparound service which was provided to a young person with exceptionally complex and challenging needs for 6 months. Predicting and explaining recurrent child abuse using interpretable machine learning: Evidence from national-level child abuse data in South Korea (2017-2020).

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop machine learning models to predict the risk of each type of recurrent child abuse using national-level child abuse data. Additionally, it sought to identify key factors based on abuse type and explain recurrence risk in individual cases. METHODS: The analysis employed a broad range of factors related to child, perpetrator, the initial episode of child abuse, and service, covering 51,517 abused children, 46,497 perpetrators, and 64,774 reported cases. Distinct predictive models were developed for each type of recurrent abuse: recurrent physical abuse (RPA

Receipt of social services intervention in childhood, educational attainment and emergency hospital admissions: longitudinal analyses of national administrative health, social care, and education data in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: Research consistently finds poorer health and educational outcomes for children who have experienced out-of-home care relative to the general population. Few studies have explored differences between those in care and those in receipt of intervention from social services but not in care. Children receiving social services interventions often experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and deprivation, which are known to negatively impact outcomes. We aimed to estimate the association of different social services interventions with educational outcomes and hospital admissions,

Interprofessional Education in Child Protection for Preservice Health and Allied Health Professionals: A Scoping Review.

Health and allied health professionals are uniquely positioned to collaborate in prevention, early intervention and responses to child maltreatment. Effective collaboration requires comprehensive interprofessional education (IPE), and inadequate collaboration across sectors and professions continually contributes to poor outcomes for children. Little is known about what interprofessional preparation health and allied health professionals receive before initial qualification (preservice) that equips them for interprofessional collaboration and provision of culturally safe care in child protecti

Disrupted parental behaviors in maltreating and high-risk families: The roles of maternal childhood maltreatment, psychological distress, and child gender.

BACKGROUND: Maltreating parents and those at high-risk of maltreating their children are likely to display disrupted behaviors during parent-child interactions. Identifying risk factors associated with these behaviors can support tailored assessments and interventions in applied settings. OBJECTIVE: This study examines potential intervening factors linking maternal childhood maltreatment to disrupted parental behaviors, focusing on the indirect role of maternal psychological distress and the moderating role of child gender. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample included 88 mothers and their c

Systematic review of organisation-wide, trauma-informed care models in out-of-home care (OoHC) settings.

Trauma in early childhood has been shown to adversely affect children's social, emotional, and physical development. Children living in out-of-home care (OoHC) have better outcomes when care providers are present for children, physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Unfortunately, the high turnover of out-of-home carers, due to vicarious trauma (frequently resulting in burnout and exhaustion) can result in a child's trauma being re-enacted during their placement in OoHC. Organisation-wide therapeutic care models (encompassing the whole organisation, from the CEO to all workers including
