Effects of three interventions on the reading skills of children with reading disabilities in grade 2.

In a longitudinal intervention study, the effects of three intervention strategies on the reading skills of children with reading disabilities in Grade 2 were analyzed. The interventions consisted of computerized training programs: One bottom-up intervention aimed at improving word decoding skills and phonological abilities, the second intervention focused on top-down processing on the word and sentence levels, and the third was a combination of these two training programs (n = 25 in each group). In addition, there were two comparison groups, 25 children with reading disabilities who received

Enhancing the reading fluency and comprehension of children with reading disabilities in an orthographically transparent language.

Breznitz (2006) demonstrated that Hebrew-speaking adults with reading disabilities benefited from a training in which reading rate was experimentally manipulated. In the present study, the authors examine whether silent reading training enhances the sentence reading rate and comprehension of children with reading disabilities and whether results found in Hebrew equally apply to an orthographically transparent language. Training results of 59 Dutch children with reading disabilities and normally achieving children show that children with reading disabilities are able to increase their sentence

N1 and P2 components of auditory event-related potentials in children with and without reading disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of within stimulus presentation rate and rise time on basic auditory processing were investigated in children with reading disabilities and typically reading children. METHODS: Children with reading disabilities (RD; N=19) and control children (N=20) were studied using event-related potentials (ERPs). Paired stimuli were used with two different within-pair-intervals (WPI; 10 and 255 ms) and two different rise times (10 and 130 ms). Each stimulus was presented with equal probability and long between-pair inter-stimulus intervals (1-5s). The study focused on N1 and P2 com

[Treatment of respiratory disturbance in children with severe physical disabilities to improve their quality of life].

Children with severe physical disabilities frequently have respiratory problems which affect their quality of life (QOL). They commonly stem from central nervous system dysfunctions and/or severe motor disabilities, and consist of various impairments deriving primarily from central and motor dysfunctions, such as dysmyotonia, deformation, dysphagia, and gastro-esophageal reflux (GER), which often influence each other and result in respiratory insufficiency without adequate interventions. Aging is also an important factor to worsen respiratory involvements and to change their underlying pathoph

Verb and noun morphology in the spoken and written language of children with language learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of verb and noun morphology in school-age children's spoken and written language. Sixty children, with and without language learning disabilities (LLD), each produced 2 spoken and 2 written language samples. The children's accuracy in using morphemes that mark verb finiteness (regular past tense, 3rd person singular present tense, copula, and auxiliary BE) was compared with their accuracy in using noun morphology (regular plural, possessive, articles). As would be expected, the typically achieving children, who were aged 7 to 12 years, had m

Teachers' skill ratings of children with learning disabilities: a comparison of the United States and Japan.

This study compared U.S. and Japanese grade school teachers' perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of children in their classrooms identified as fitting commonly used criteria for a learning disability. U.S. teachers identified 4.0 percent of their children as meeting the criteria and Japanese teachers identified 1.5 percent. The teachers then rated these children's abilities in the areas of listening, speaking, reading/writing, reasoning, mathematics, social, and study skills. Overall, U.S. and Japanese teachers' rating patterns were similar on 70 percent of the skills. In most areas wh

Behavioural treatment of urinary incontinence and encopresis in children with learning disabilities: transfer of stimulus control.

Urinary and faecal incontinence present a considerable problem in people with learning disabilities, despite the general effectiveness of behavioural techniques in continence training. Children with learning disabilities and obsessional behaviour may be particularly resistant to toilet training, even where relatively cognitively able, and often despite a substantial degree of control over their eliminatory functions. Their resistance may be more appropriately regarded as a challenging behaviour and their incontinence better explained by factors other than a simple failure to learn. A 'stimulus

Refractive errors in children with cerebral palsy, psychomotor retardation, and other non-cerebral palsy neuromotor disabilities.

The aim of this study was to analyse the refractive state of four different groups of children: those with spastic cerebral palsy (CP), aged between 7 and 81 months (N=50); psychomotor retardation, aged between 19 and 70 months (N=16); other neuromotor dysfunctions, aged between 12 and 75 months (N=37); and without psychomotor retardation, aged between 9 and 73 months (N=181). Refractive errors were determined using cycloplegic retinoscopy and non-cycloplegic retinoscopy (Mohindra's technique). We found higher percentages of hyperopia, tendency toward hyperopia, and other refractive anomalies

Home or children's treatment centre: where should initial therapy assessments of children with disabilities be done?

Following developmental paediatric consultation at a child development clinic, 50 preschool children newly referred for a developmental rehabilitation programme were assigned randomly for initial therapist assessments at home or at the clinic. It was thought that children would perform more typically at home, that therapists would be able to observe more of the children's usual functions, and that parents would feel more satisfied. Despite several minor statistically significant differences between the two venues, there was no obvious advantage of home evaluation over clinic assessment. Howeve

A Snapshot of 1001 Children Presenting with Cerebral Palsy to a Children's Disability Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) has largely been an unaddressed problem in low and middle income countries (LMIC's). The purpose of this retrospective study is to provide a facility-based snapshot of CP in Nepal. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 1001 patients diagnosed as having cerebral palsy, presenting to our institution from December 2008 to December 2011, was carried out. RESULTS: Majority of cases were found to be a result of birth complications and post-natal infections. Most children with CP were born at home, presented after walking age and came from socioeconomically unstab

Comparing the fundamental movement skill proficiency of children with intellectual disabilities and typically developing children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children around the world, particularly those with intellectual disabilities (ID), are exhibiting poor motor skill proficiency. Compared with typically developing children (TDC), children with intellectual disabilities (CwID) are 65% more likely to exhibit low levels of motor competence. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the motor skill proficiency levels, in terms of fundamental movement skills (FMS) of CwID to TDC. FMS are the building blocks required for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity. METHOD: The meta-analysis was conducted according to PR

Numeracy skills learning of children in Africa:-Are disabled children lagging behind?

Significant progress has been achieved in universal basic education in African countries since the late 1990s. This study provides empirical evidence on the within- and across-country variation in numeracy skills performance among children based on nationally representative data from eight African countries (DR Congo, The Gambia, Ghana, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Togo, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe). We assess whether and to what extent children with disabilities lag in numeracy skills and how much it depends on their type of disabilities. More specifically, we explore whether disabled children benefit eq…

Latent profiles of emotional and behavioral risks in children with intellectual disabilities: characteristics and associations with parenting styles.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify heterogeneous emotional and behavioral patterns in children and adolescents with intellectual developmental disorder (intellectual disability) (ID) and to determine how these profiles are associated with different parenting styles. METHODS: Latent profile analysis was used to identify children's emotional and behavioral risk trajectories. One-way ANOVA assessed differences in parenting styles across the resulting behavioral risk profiles. Multinomial logistic regression investigated the associations of parenting styles with child profile membership. RESULTS: Ana

Exploring the occupational therapy goal-setting process with immigrant families of children with disabilities in the Australian context.

INTRODUCTION: Collaborative relationship-focussed practice centres on the relational aspects of co-designing priorities and goals with individuals, collectives, and occupational therapists. To establish a relationship with immigrant families of children with disabilities, aligning the goals with their values and resources is essential. However, this is perceived as challenging, and there is a significant knowledge gap regarding how the goals are set in the occupational therapy process with immigrant families of children with disabilities. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore how immigrant …

[The effect of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities with respiratory insufficiency].

We investigated the clinical course of 20 children (persons) with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) who were treated with noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) for respiratory insufficiency. NPPV was effective in 10 of 11 patients treated for acute respiratory failure, and in 7 of 9 patients treated for chronic respiratory failure. Twelve patients were treated with NPPV for more than one year. There were no complications associated with NPPV in any of the patients. NPPV improved ventilation impairment soon after ventilation was started, and avoided the need for the e

Training phonemic segmentation ability with a phonemic discrimination intervention in second- and third-grade children with reading disabilities.

The present study examined the possibility that phonemic discrimination training could improve the phonemic segmentation ability of children with reading disabilities. Half of the 32 children with reading disabilities (14 male and 4 female second graders and 10 male and 4 female third graders, with mean ages of 99.2 and 109.7 months, respectively) deficient in phonemic segmentation skills were assigned to the training group, while the other half acted as a nontrained control group. The trained children were successful at significantly improving their performance on the phonemic segmentation ta

Executive functions underlie word reading and reading fluency in Chinese children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, reading disabilities, and comorbid attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and reading disabilities.

The current study examined the executive function (EF) deficits and their roles in reading in one hundred and four Cantonese-speaking children with typical development, reading disabilities (RD), ADHD, and comorbid ADHD and RD (ADHD + RD). Children's EF and reading skills were measured. Analysis of variance results showed that all children with disorders manifested deficits in verbal and visuospatial short-term and working memory and behavioral inhibition. Moreover, children with ADHD and ADHD + RD also exhibited deficits in inhibition (IC and BI) and cognitive flexibility. These findings demo

Spatial knowledge of a real school environment acquired from virtual or physical models by able-bodied children and children with physical disabilities.

In Experiment 1, 2 groups of able-bodied children were exposed to both a complex single-tier virtual environment (VE) and a physical model of a different environment. For 1 group, the VE accurately modeled a real school, and for the other group the physical model did so. In transfer testing in the real school, orientation accuracy was greater in the group exposed to the VE of the real school. In Experiment 2, children with physical disabilities explored the VE model of the real school and were tested as in the 1st experiment. Measures of orientation accuracy and map-placing were significantly
