The accidental ingestion of a foreign body is not uncommon. However, the presence of a foreign body in the gallbladder is extremely rare. Here, we present a case of cholecystitis due to a fish bone that may have penetrated through the stomach wall and into the gallbladder without causing peritonitis. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed; a fish bone, measuring 4.0 cm in length, was found in the gallbladder. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case to be reported.

One-hundred and twenty-seven consecutive patients with acute cholecystitis were operated using laparoscopic technique. Average Surgical operating time was 113 minutes with an average of 127 minutes if operative cholangiogram was performed and 96 minutes when cholangiogram was not done. Eighty-one cases of cholecystectomy performed over a period of 12 months were reviewed. Those operated upon acutely, those operated upon electively, and those initially treated in the hospital before surgery was performed were compared with regards to the length of hospital stay, injury to the common bile duct, wound infection and mortality rate. Hepatobiliary imaging has an established diagnostic role in adults with acute cholecystitis but is underutilized in children. Roentgenological, radionuclide, ultrasound and thermographic methods were evaluated in 31 patients with acute and 85 with chronic cholecystitis. It was established that the succession of using of the above methods depends on the course of cholecystitis. In acute cholecystitis examination is begun with thermography and terminated by ultrasound. In chronic cholecystitis ultrasound is the first method to be followed by radionuclide methods. The authors describe a case of acute gangrenous cholecystitis in a 17-month-old boy manifested by symptoms of an inflammatory acute abdomen after several days of a febrile condition associated with diarrhoea.
